"The most important thing to remember is: to protect your quarterback - ME!"
Paul Crewe
The Longest Yard 1974
Dun.. dun.. dun... 342...342... hut, hut... Hut! Are you ready for some football? Well... my New England Patriots didn't make it; but representing the AFC is the Indianapolis Colts and QB, Peyton Manning. The match-up between him and his counterpart Mr. Drew Brees of the New Orleans"Who DAT" Saints will be offensively incredible. The drive, the quarterback sneak, the pass, the sack, the turnover, the interception the intentional grounding...the....greatest game of all time.
Its SUPERBOWL baby!!!
As a competitor, I have to admit that competition in the game of football between divisions; positions, offensive and defensive coordinators; instant replay, challenges and booth reviews signifies the man in the game, the man in the uniform and the fan in the stands. Sports demonstrate competition on a more physical level; however, the will of a man, the skill of the sport and the longest yard to the TD only serve us such purpose to test the power of the win; where the best of the best are measured up on the field.
We drive in yards; we falter in inches; yet, who is measuring the will?
Two films were made titled; "The Longest Yard". Burt Reynolds played the first Paul Crewe, and his successor was Adam Sandler, took the title as Paul "Wrecking" Crewe some thirty years later. I had to take a quote from the original just because the heart of the sport was in the drive of the circumstance, the desire for the game and the rivalry beneath a man. Aside from humor in Sandler's version in 2005; I found the "re-make" to be a little weak; not as humble.
"We're gettin' up a football game against the guards. Wondered if maybe you and some of your buddies here would like to join in on the fun." - Paul Crewe
The longest yard makes the furthest kick as redeemable. The longest drive is a QB's goal, yet, the chance for interception or fumble are quite as apparent. Its like knowing you have to settle for a turn of downs and settle for a chance at lost points; yet still maintain composure. When I think in terms of yards; I think in terms of opportunity.
Life is in all actuality; a long yard towards the endzone.
Think about this for a minute; you may be on the offensive in your life. You are the quarterback, surrounded by a team of receivers, tight ends and a threatening defense. When you need to accomplish a step-by-step advancement; its all about the time it takes to gain yardage. When on the defensive your backs are protecting that desire; they are defending your current success; they are your lifeline.
Superbowl is bringing the longest yard to the season finale.
Its time to drink, its time to eat, its time to critique. We gaze at all those commercials in awe of the creativity in our advertisers; we await a half time show with music's greatest legend; yet, it comes down to two competitors with a will to win; two competitors with a chance to succeed; we are in the heart of the game.
We watch these men because we live their passion, their drive and their emotions on our sleeves. We are in the game.
Its ok to admit you put on your jerseys pretending you are on the line; but, I guess its just as comical to admit we think know and can predict the winner.
In terms of yardage; have you inched your way along your life's yardstick? If not; get busy... or the competitor (opponent) might set you back due to some lame ass pass interference call. Or, you maybe be inches away from completing that first down. Either way... life is about starters; don't sit on the bench waiting for victory.

Besides, the original The Longest Yard was a great movie, and this is coming from an art-movie guy! And I didn't realize a Burt Reynolds movie could be so profound.
