"No, you're nothing like that song. You're like if that was the only song in the world that I could hear for the rest of my life. You're that song."

The Thing Called Love
1993
Love is in the air; flowers are being picked; chocolates are readily waiting for their heart shaped boxes.... its practically Valentine's Day and yet, love is not supposed to be about the tangible, right? I think of this film when I think of the times people most relate to with regards to falling in love so quickly. The adrenaline rush, the catch your breath moment of weakness in the knee buckling anticipation for the emotion provoked words; I LOVE YOU.
"You want me to tell you how I feel about you? " Kyle Davidson
As we approach another Valentine's Day, the lovers will be exchanging love; the lonely will be exchanging hate in those in love, and those wanting to be in love, will be watching movies on the premise of love. Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, Dirty Dancing, Sweet Home Alabama, Love Actually, The Notebook, P.S. I Love you, Must Love Dogs, and even, My Best Friends Wedding.
If Valentine's Day is to capture the heart with Cupid's arrow; are we saying we should only tell someone how we really feel on this one single day?
Think about your first love, your first kiss, your first Valentine's Day; did it start with a song, did it start with surroundings or circumstance; was it planned? In The Thing Called Love, the hunt for fame and stardom brought about love and regret. The rush into thinking something was so perfect; ended up being the rush into wanting something so perfect.
Is love about sharing your dreams with someone? Is love about wanting your dreams to be shared?
Miranda's character seeks the acceptance of Nashville's music dream and battles the love triangle between James and Kyle. She chooses James, yet, it doesn't leave us with any confidence that there is the happy ending. A girl from New York and a man from Texas, two separate worlds that lead us to believe it can't happen. Yet, we are confident that love is mere attraction.
We watch movies to feel good; to find comfort in happily ever after. I think some films are made to depict that there isn't necessarily a happily ever after; you have to work at it. You have to make the impossible, possible, and the possible responsible.
Whether or not we are chasing dreams, searching for love, trying to maintain love, or finding out that ones we've loved have stopped chasing us; its ok to pretend for one day out of the year that everything on the outside is just perfect.
The next few days will be postings about love, those times that end well, and those times that make us wonder. I do often wonder; does everything we do revolve around the swinging door of every opportunity to find happiness? Or do we glutton ourselves for punishment in trying to compare what it is that we think we need to be a part of?
