I often think... how do we get ourselves in the mindset that we are going to do something outside our comfort zones? When do we resort to knowing that most times our comfort zones are actually the most challenging environments, and we miss the hurdles in which we thought we had to overcome ? Skiing is that sport that allows the speed, the height and the race at a chance for freedom. It allows the skier the chance to excel with nothing but wind and air and velocity surrounding them.
A downhill racer is quick, precise, dedicated and aware of the elements in which surround them. The sky, the trees, the peak of the mountain and the decline of the hill are critical to the sport, because without the obstacles, the air in which we soar through, would only stand still and we'd seek no risk.
The strength and critical technique that go into a downhill skiers mindset is the strength and technique that plays into the man's image of competition. It is inevitable to compete. It is inevitable to want to to become a master at at technique or to become poignant at such style. It is inevitable to say the least that adrenaline junkies are competitors.
Would you race downhill if the idea was to compete against gravity alone? Would you race downhill knowing the landing was in hindsight?
Difficult turns, icy elements, huge air jumps and extreme steeps make up a downhill racer's course. The question is: What prepares you for such a task? What gives you the confidence to make that choice to compete the mountain? When the winter Olympics come around every four years we attempt to seek their adrenaline. We attempt to feel their passion. Some take up the sport in which they embrace, while others gasp in the spectacle through their eyes.
Whether or not we feel we are untouchable on the ice, or free on the snow; we still are held accountable for our jumps. We still need to know that our hurdles in life are in a way a downhill race towards a goal. I've never looked at life as a uphill climb with a downhill slide; but, I've seen life go through challenging climbs and quick downhill strides.
A downhill skier starts at the top; racing downhill towards an accomplishment. A person in life climbs uphill over time to reach their accomplishment. Without support in element like family, friends, colleagues or religion some people end up on that downhill slope with a faster time on the clock than an Olympian.
Take each day in stride; take each accomplishment in humble recognition; just don't be overzealous when given the opportunity to shine.
