" You are a rare and delicate flower! "
Roger Ferris
Body of Lies
2008
This film didn't get all the hype or recognition that many Leo films expose. However, it was a great film that gave us another brilliant performance by Leonardo DiCaprio as we uncover that deceit, truth and honesty are sometimes the best policy in situational circumstances.
Along the lines of "Body of Lies", the affiliation to the theme of the CIA and the US intelligence provides audiences the destructive nature of truth and terrorists intervention.
We all swear by the reality that the truth is what sets you free; however, the truth in some cases, represents how you need to protect the reign in which you hold onto each day. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Roger Ferris, and Ferris is the best man for the job with regards to the operations that take him around the world in pursuit of an emerging terrorist attack. The plan to destruct the most intelligent network in the world keeps you on the edge of your seat as the plot thickens and truth be told conforms.
In all actuality, the pursuit of ones trust is, and will become a dangerous mission for oneself once discovered that trust is the only thing that will get you out alive.
Coming full circle to the reality at hand, trust is what makes the reality of your existence, less deceitful. As we focus on the two main characters in this film, Roger Ferris (Leo) and Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe), we see their contrasting styles and autocracies on their view surrounding trust. Roger believes in trust too much, while Ed has more of a concrete view of truth and morality. With the terrorists steering clear of means of communications via telephone, Internet, and computers; the face-to-face interactions become more and more valuable in affirming the mission. Roger and Ed must compete together to survive and the true test of survival comes down to living within your own body of lies.
"Nobody's innocent in this shit." - Ed Hoffman
I think about life in regards to this theme. We are technology junkies; its a fact. The human is reliant on less face-to-face interactions, and more reliant on the deception in which we hide are characters through the screen, the phone or the email. Deception to the idea that we can be anyone we want. Most never cease to change; however, some use it as their alter ego.
I often ponder the thought; do people talk less now because of technology?
Are there more opportunities for distrust and deceit due to an increased desire in technology?
The way of the spoken word, is the written word for the interpreter. We speak to portray confidence when give the authority, yet, we coward in situations in which the confidence is overpowered. Some end up wanting clarity and explanation, while some are confused or misinterpreted by language. Humans are examples of the body of lies in which one possesses when given the opportunity to explore language's understandings.
Are the trusting souls meant to be most trusted? Or do we just assume trust comes with power and authority, and we must exude confidence in our actions or get lost in translation?
I could discuss this film's plot and life's theme for a thousand more words, but, the truth of the matter is... trust develops amongst your own interpretation. Whether or not you compete to explore it through the many options you have to express it will decipher the delivery of morality in which you choose to live by.
