"You gotta have presence on the court. Presence like a cheetah rather than a chimp. Sure, they both got it, but Chimpy gotta jump his nuts around to get it. The shy cheetah moves with total nonchalance, stickin' it to them in his sexy, slow strut. Me? I play like a cheetah."

The Basketball Diaries
1995
Can creativity and skill on and off the court suffice for creativity and skill, in and out of your own well being? The Basketball Diaries not only isolated a heroin addiction and a boy with a dream beyond the court; it compared life's greatest addiction to the game beyond the high of the drug.
When you know you are in competition to win at something you've worked your entire life towards; do you know when the competition of tempting addictions become more and more relevant?
Each day we strive to compile our list towards dreams and aspirations. Yet, do we seek to find why the dream was halted or postponed? Do we imagine why the dream became such a thing in the first place?
I've never had an addiction to drugs so I can't speak to how it feels; but, I have experienced an addition to a dream. I've lived the constant highs and lows in reality that combines ones most desperate attempt to find something that in which I've excelled at. We take competition in life further than the shot clock or the flagrant foul; we make the game a constant dribble and an advantage when we turn the ball over.
Is drug addition the same as wanting to be on a team?
Nevertheless it can and can't be. A dream and an addiction might both be chased in an attempt for instant gratitude, but, once one engages in an attempt to win, does the drive for the next release of the ball even compare?
The Basketball Diaries showcased many interchanging themes and concepts. The reality of the matter is that once life takes on the dream and the addiction to life evokes the potential; has it been stripped away before you have the chance to come down and enjoy the high? Leonardo DiCaprio shines as a passionate addict trying to find his place on and off the court. The pain inflicted with the concept of "belonging" becomes more substantial when life takes us down a dark tunnel.
Basketball and Heroin. Two concepts that may never be easily compared; two concepts that are up to interpretation. I belong chasing a dream.... because I know the dream will become an instant high with long term effect.
