One Movie Line At A Time
Bio
Growing up loving movies, and quoting infamous lines, N. Jordan is about taking life's given competition and embracing it through movies quotes. Each posting reflects a personal understanding on how movies effect people, our lives and our fake realities. If life is a movie, why do we compete in so many ways? Sports, love, relationships, family, business, money, career, kids, etc. Its time to see who is keeping score. Because... life is sometimes an altered reality, just go at it one movie line at a time. My real name is Michelle Keifer. But, I've always wanted to talk about life through a guy's perspective. Just seemed so fitting as I've always been just one of the boys. Go New England Patriots!

BONUS "The Basketball Diaries"- heroin addiction off court

Rate: 3 Flag

the basketball diaries

"You gotta have presence on the court. Presence like a cheetah rather than a chimp. Sure, they both got it, but Chimpy gotta jump his nuts around to get it. The shy cheetah moves with total nonchalance, stickin' it to them in his sexy, slow strut. Me? I play like a cheetah."

- Jim

The Basketball Diaries

1995

Can creativity and skill on and off the court suffice for creativity and skill, in and out of your own well being? The Basketball Diaries not only isolated a heroin addiction and a boy with a dream beyond the court; it compared life's greatest addiction to the game beyond the high of the drug.

When you know you are in competition to win at something you've worked your entire life towards; do you know when the competition of tempting addictions become more and more relevant?

Each day we strive to compile our list towards dreams and aspirations. Yet, do we seek to find why the dream was halted or postponed? Do we imagine why the dream became such a thing in the first place?

I've never had an addiction to drugs so I can't speak to how it feels; but, I have experienced an addition to a dream. I've lived the constant highs and lows in reality that combines ones most desperate attempt to find something that in which I've excelled at. We take competition in life further than the shot clock or the flagrant foul; we make the game a constant dribble and an advantage when we turn the ball over.

Is drug addition the same as wanting to be on a team?

Nevertheless it can and can't be. A dream and an addiction might both be chased in an attempt for instant gratitude, but, once one engages in an attempt to win, does the drive for the next release of the ball even compare?

The Basketball Diaries showcased many interchanging themes and concepts. The reality of the matter is that once life takes on the dream and the addiction to life evokes the potential; has it been stripped away before you have the chance to come down and enjoy the high? Leonardo DiCaprio shines as a passionate addict trying to find his place on and off the court. The pain inflicted with the concept of "belonging" becomes more substantial when life takes us down a dark tunnel.

Basketball and Heroin. Two concepts that may never be easily compared; two concepts that are up to interpretation. I belong chasing a dream.... because I know the dream will become an instant high with long term effect.

Had to throw one more Leo film in.... enjoy ;-)
I'm glad you did! Leo has turned into our next De Niro. I've thought often how Michael Jordon would make an excellent addict. He is addicted to the "rush" of sports. Thats why he has a gambling addiction along with Barkley and a lot of other athletes. That one rush, of hitting the game winner, or the perfect putt to win a $1000.00. But, as soon as that moment is over, they have to find another rush. An addicts clocks are not like regular peoples. They live my minutes, not hours or days. A heroin addict will do anything for that one rush, get up, and go do the same thing again to find that perfect rush, which is really unattainable, I don't believe you ever really find it. Even Jordan, making the shot to win the Wold Championship against Utah, was gambling on the golf course the next day. I really think that if someone that played now, would bet him a million to play them ten minutes, winner take all, he would do it or die. Addiction is something that I've played around with for decades, off and on, and it will gut you, and leave the head for the cats!
I really enjoyed this and the movie. I read Jim Carroll's Basketball Diaries at an early age. Great last paragraph. What you are doing here is a fine thing. I've just discovered you recently. I'll be back!
scanner.. you bring up such a great point. I LOVE your intepretation of addiction and sports. Thank you for mentioning Michael Jordan and Barkley. That was icing on the cake for today's post.
