" The waterfall is most important. Mixes the chocolate. Churns it up, makes it light and frothy. By the way, no other factory in the world mixes its chocolate by waterfall, my dear children, and you can take that to the bank."
Willy Wonka
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
2005
Johnny Depp portrayed the infamous Willy Wonka in this remake version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory; called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I recall watching the original as a kid, thinking about the world full of candy and temptation into imagination and endless supply of sweetness. As I age, I see the world not only as a chocolate factory full of life's sweetest temptations, but, as a world full of intrigue, interest and opportunity to enjoy the many splendor tastes and appreciation of satisfaction.
Willy Wonka, as played by Gene Wilder back in1971 allowed us into a world of confectionery candy and it's factory. Johnny Depp brought us back into the world of this eccentric reality.
Think about life here for a moment. A child jumps at the opportunity to take a fantasy leap into a world of chocolate, sweets, and candy. To an adult, the candy becomes of a different caliber. It becomes life's temptations of money, love, family, and success. But, as this factory has its own malfunctions and sideways quirks just like life evokes, the idea that we making one choice over another choice is the philosophy that tests the waters of what is, and isn't acceptable behavior.
I saw this movie as a fine example of what people will and will not do for instant gratification. I look at the children in this film, and their personalities as examples of someone we may, or may have known. It doesn't have to necessarily be children or a child, the personalities of people we know can be mirrored in adults and their behaviors. It is interesting to note that people can and will become greedy when given an overabundance of opportunity. A boy like Charlie who knew nothing but poverty, took the factory tour as an opportunity to experience something outside his norm; he found confirmation of who he was.
Am I correct by saying that no matter how humble a person is, temptation lurks in some which way or another?
A sweet tooth in life coincides with a lust for passion and adventure. Johnny Depp is able to show us that as an actor we can live these characters of life through him, and express how we really feel through visual observation. A world of endless candy, and mistakes, and temptation is only as sweet as the person running the factory. Ultimately at the end of the day, the sweet goes away and the factory is what you make of it. We take on opportunity to improve our experiences, we take a piece of candy to taste sweet indulgence, yet, fantasy is fantasy, and I'd never know any different if I didn't believe in the golden ticket.
"Can you imagine Augustus-flavored, chocolate-coated Gloop? Ew, no one would buy it." - Willy Wonka
