One Movie Line At A Time
Bio
Growing up loving movies, and quoting infamous lines, N. Jordan is about taking life's given competition and embracing it through movies quotes. Each posting reflects a personal understanding on how movies effect people, our lives and our fake realities. If life is a movie, why do we compete in so many ways? Sports, love, relationships, family, business, money, career, kids, etc. Its time to see who is keeping score. Because... life is sometimes an altered reality, just go at it one movie line at a time. My real name is Michelle Keifer. But, I've always wanted to talk about life through a guy's perspective. Just seemed so fitting as I've always been just one of the boys. Go New England Patriots!

#146 "Edward Scissorhands"... a man with deep scars

Rate: 6 Flag

edward scissorhands

 "I am not complete."

- Edward

Edward Scissorhands

1990

A man with deep scars and an uncanny insecurity from the world, Edward Scissorhands demonstrated that even the most gentle beings can be looked at differently because of perception. Johnny Depp by far, played this character with poise, confidence and exuberance. The gentle soul of Edward, and the revolving theme of acceptance, was powerful and empathetic to say the least as Kim is introduced and loved by audiences.

It was exceptionally critical to highlight that people are two-fold: emotionally and physically.

When Edward says, "I am not complete" ... I must imagine what the definition of complete is.

Is complete composed of appearance, or confidence, or security? Or is complete a need for compassion, love and acceptance? I often at times think about the world and its generations. How people have evolved through time. Were people the same in the 70's or the 60's that they are today or were in the 90's?

What defines a person's evolving nature?

Some can say that a person becomes into their own when they have realized all that they were. Where the reflection is stronger than that initial image, and where the sound of your voice is calmer than the echo of conversation. People are versatile, and complete; yet, to what extent or caliber have they found their comfort?

"You see, before he came down here, it never snowed. And afterwards, it did. If he weren't up there now... I don't think it would be snowing. Sometimes you can still catch me dancing in it." - Kim

It is special to say the least that life allows opportunity to make perception your own. I can compete knowing my own reflection is not what I see in the mirror, but, what I feel when I speak, or enter a room. People find comfort in many ways, some ways are detrimental to oneself, yet, complete to another. Edward's character was a gentle soul with compassion for people and their soul. Once you looked past what inhibits him from being deemed, "normal", you can look into the man that many of us strive to be.

I strive each day to be a good person, however, I know that greatest is defined to each individual differently.

Leading life as the individual with consideration for others is like leading life with 20/20 vision eyes, an open mind, heart, accepting ear. I find that when you find someone that sees your soul, you will start showing them you, and they will start to see you through your own reflection. Because we know... our reflection is what we think of ourselves, not the preconceived notion of what something thinks they know about us.

"Eddie. The guys and I were talking, we'd like want to invite you to our card game on Friday night. Would you like that? Only thing is, you can't cut!" - George

I remember having two thoughts when I saw the movie 20 years ago: 1. I wonder how much they based the character on Michael Jackson; 2. This will be the best role Johnny Depp will ever get.
OK, I was clearly wrong about that one.

Alice in Wonderland has been getting tepid reviews, but I'm anxious to see it, because the Burton-Depp team always produces interesting stuff. I loved Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (so I'll go read what you posted about it a couple days ago).
Thanks Cranky Cuss... I am curious about Alice in Wonderland too.... I believe that Johnny takes the ecclectic out of the original and teams it up with Burton to deliever a masterpiece of insight and thought. I too couldn't believe this was 20years ago. Plus, I was extremely surprised Depp has exceeded his caliber for his roles as well.
Thanks for your feedback and readership. Thanks,!!!!
I don't know how good Alice in Wonderland will be, but I would bet a dead dog that Deep's performance is spot on. I think he has a body of work over the last twenty years that will match anyone. Great Post Jordan!
I always liked that movie. I also think Alice in Wonderland's remake is long overdue. Rated.
Wow, Movie J! I started reading this for Edward Scissorhands (and you, of course) but was entranced by your words and reflections! The soft Knowingness of Edward must be speaking through you... What a perfect projection on film you've chosen to so eloquently express your understanding of perception and reflection! Uncanny! Your sentences expand and deepen as we read them -- you have reached into the great Mystery here!

Thank you! (And just don't cut the card deck! ~Couldn't resist!~)
Great take (as always)... I recall hearing an interview with Depp a few years ago where he remarked that Edward Scissorhands was the role that was most like his actual persona.
scanner.. its is true to say that Depp has excelled and created such a vibe and following over the past 20 plus years. Nice touch. Thanks,

Thoth.. I too am surprised that Tim Burton didn't do the Alice in Wonderland some 10yrs ago.

Julie.. too kind. Thank you! I adored the cut the card deck part. Had to include it. I appreciate your feedback as always.

moviegeekjn.. I heard that too. Edward and Johnny.. similar characters, very shy and timid, but with depth in soul. Thanks for reminding me of that.
Plus Deep looks so good on screen in most movies. Seems to me he exudes both sensuality and a thoughtful demeanor. He is masculine but shows a feminine side complimented by his wide bright eyes and longer hair. And of course, the acting ...
jhonny is one of the better actors in the world, good post.
