"Peace isn't merely the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice."
President James Marshall
Air Force One
1997
Each of us encompasses our own conflict style. Each of us encompasses a way of seeing the true meaning behind decisions and justice. When conflict becomes a mere opposite of a catalyst to justice, we discover that perhaps justice is served and conflict is inevitable.
Think about when you are attempting to get a message across. Think about how it is that an individual communicates? On a broader and wider scale, think about what happens when the message is ultimately received.
I often express that competition in each one of us is a good thing. We compete to be better, we compete to win, and we compete to somewhat complete our existence. In regards to conflict... it is not necessarily a bad thing, it is tried and true and trusted to be the greatest test of communication.
What is your conflict style?
Do you become evaluative? Do you become superior? Are you a stonewalling conflict achiever? Stonewalling meaning reluctant to exchange verbal or non-verbal action, and resulting in silent treatment? We realize that conflict is stemmed from how we choose to deal with stressful and uncomfortably surprising situations.
Do we plan to conflict upon one another because we feel we are given injustice?
Air Force One was one of those films that gave us insight to a world separate from our preconceived reality and interpretation of conflict in terrorism. I strongly believe that this film was existential in the concept that courage and strength can exude justice and solace in experience. Harrison Ford played President James Marshall. The President was headed back when Air Force One, the President's Plane, was hijacked. We see throughout this film the determination of a man to regain control, power and survival. We see the result of hostage situations and risky operations. The premise of justice and conflict arises from the premise of injustice and defeat.
Each one person has the opportunity to engage in conflict with a goal, when that goal changes during the interaction, we can only imagine why that conflict started to begin with.
Besides the ultimate reality and paradigm shift in this film, we as audiences see that courage is embedded in us all, that family, survival and justice are deserved. As we look towards the different leaders in our lives, we contemplate where we stand. Some of us are born to lead, while others are born to follow. While the followers follow the leader and the leaders exude leadership, the conflict remains between dominant leaders and tiresome followers.
We can't lose track of the message behind Air Force One because incoherent to us all, we must be prepared to react when given the opportunity to engage in conflict. How we react is how we've always reacted since childhood. It's about acknowledging your style, its about understanding your strengths and overcoming your weaknesses.
Being competitive makes the strongest competitor conflicted with the desire to succeed, and succeeding as the strongest competitor might enable the weakest soul to persevere. It is a race to the top, yet, not everyone wants to be in the sky, some prefer to take the view from the ground, and you know what... that is just as poignant, just as brave.
