One Movie Line At A Time
Bio
Growing up loving movies, and quoting infamous lines, N. Jordan is about taking life's given competition and embracing it through movies quotes. Each posting reflects a personal understanding on how movies effect people, our lives and our fake realities. If life is a movie, why do we compete in so many ways? Sports, love, relationships, family, business, money, career, kids, etc. Its time to see who is keeping score. Because... life is sometimes an altered reality, just go at it one movie line at a time. My real name is Michelle Keifer. But, I've always wanted to talk about life through a guy's perspective. Just seemed so fitting as I've always been just one of the boys. Go New England Patriots!

Plagiarism.. we must teach, not banish the mistake

Rate: 13 Flag

I feel compelled to post something. We all come to OS to exude our inner writing (blogging) ability to entertain, reflect, invite and illicit thoughts in words, visuals and interpretation. As a recently returned college student, plagiarism is a serious topic. Plagiarism can cause expulsion from a university and is in the writer's world; a crime.

Many of the bloggers/writers here on OS are amateurs. Those writers/bloggers are sometimes the most creative and brilliant examples of intuition and recourse. Instead of us attacking one another for mistakes, lets encourage one another to cite our sources and encourage one another to quote with praise, and give credit to those where credit is due.

A majority of the writers/bloggers here are OS are veterans in the writing world. We have astonishing work from writers who have given us a great canvas to improve on. We have English graduates, we have editors, we have published authors that we can all learn from.

Each day I blog a movie quote. That quote came from a writer, that quote was someones work of art. I use resources like the IMDB and and obtain my movie poster pictures from the IMP awards website. These quotes are not mine, nor do I have access to the original screenplays or scripts, but, I appreciate these writers, and the only way to give them the proper credit and exposure is to consistently on a daily basis share with the words through their language.

I was appalled by the negativity about plagiarism and the mis-use of it recently on OS. WE, writers, blogger, amateurs, etc, have to all work together to encourage proper citations and achieve a community where we encourage one another to continue to write and express valid and honest information while documenting our conceptual ideas.

Please, please please let us all encourage one another to grow, to learn and to appreciate the great works of those we are inspired by, and those we can continue to become mentors to.

I love being here, and I love sharing my vision with all of you, we are all human, and sometimes we make mistakes, lets teach one another that the mistake is valid, and that the true meaning of writing is allowing oneself to express, not necessarily to steal.

I think it would be great if TPTB put out some basic guidelines for people writing here, including giving proper attribution to anything that is quoted or referenced.

It's such a basic tenet of writing that people are taught from at least junior high school onward, that I'm a bit stunned that so many people around here are arguing that it's unimportant, doesn't apply to bloggers, etc. To me, that's like saying that I can go into my neighbor's house and take anything I want, as there's no such thing as private property. A writer's words are the writer's property. Period.

But we're living in a culture where many now believe all content should be free -- they download music and movies with no thought to how the artists or producers of entertainment make a living.

Once you're taking stuff for free, what's the big deal with taking words and not acknowledging that you didn't put them together yourself?

Before long, I'll be able to claim with impunity that I painted "Starry Night," directed "The Godfather" and wrote "To Kill a Mockingbird." Cool!!!
This needs to be heard, I think.
Thanks for your kind, reasoned approach here! And you hit the point exactly -- we have such a varied group of people writing here that not only do the writing intentions and standards cover a broad spectrum of possibilities, but the knowledge and understanding of what's acceptable and not in the professional or academic writing world, also varies as widely here.

I saw the post that triggered this discussion, and my take on it (as a paid writer since college -- and even before, and a long-time tutor and grader, as well) was that the intention was not what it was taken to be by some who are in or are aiming for the top echelon of writing careers, at least in pay scale standards! (Industry and subject matter's always subjective, you know.)

I believe it was an opportunity for educating and instructing, and I also believe a kind gesture of informing would have taken care of it.

It's funny when someone's on the warpath for their favorite causes (all of us included) that we don't usually realize others may not only not be involved in that same cause, but they also may not even be able to identify with it...

Kindness when speaking truth always accomplishes so much more than other approaches. Let's celebrate this forum for being what it is -- open. And help and enjoy each other!
It is shocking how many people have defended the plagiarist, insisting it's not a big deal and how the plagiarist is such a nice guy. It doesn't matter if the person is nice or mean, ugly or handsome, male or female or some permutation thereof, it has nothing to do with what was done. It was plagiarism. It is stealing. It is wrong.
Writing words in a certain order to express a new/original idea/thought is private property. What pisses me off is for someone who has never written an original thought militantly and maliciously smearing a writer's reputation over an out of context line of text.

Readers will always recognize plagiarism. Only those jealous idiots will believe that silkstone directed the Godfather.

Excellent argument, rated.
I didn't see your post earlier, Jordan. Thank you for a logical and positive argument. Rated.
The present dust-up is a perfect example of how an important message about the importance of attribution gets lost in all the defensiveness and name-calling.
Let's put the matter to rest. Bury the hatchet. Kiss and make up.

Thoth, you appear to have lost your mind. I am sorry about that, but really. Nothing was taken out of context, the proof is clear and abundant in this and other cases with the writer in question. Your defense of a plagiarist and accusation against someone -- not sure whom -- as never having written an original thought is based on what proof exactly? I proved that what MrsRaptor said about Julie plagiarizing her screenplay was untrue. Again, where is YOUR proof?
And as for readers always recognizing plagiarism, you couldn't be more wrong. I can prove that too. How much time do you have? On this site alone, I can come up with numerous examples of plagiarized posts that no one recognized as being stolen. That is a remarkably naive statement.
silkstone... yes "attribution". That word is powerful. I remember citing of sources drilled into my head over and over my school career. Its up to us to continue to reinforce the quality of citing sources and giving proper attribution. Free doesn't always constitute free, and stealing, doesn't always constitue borrowing. Thanks for your comment... I hope I didn't get the wrong message across.
peppermint.. it does, you thought right ;-)

JULIE!!! You said this beautifully. Your comment is true interpretation of what I wanted to say. Thank you Thank you Thank you for reiterating my purpose.

Ablonde... we all know that everyone is entitled to their opinion, even writers make mistakes, I just wanted to make sure we all know that plagarism is serious, and here at OS, we need to inform and constructively help one another when we've made a mistake. Not strictly banish or call them out on their mis-step. Some people might not see the importance, and that is where we document their importance. I would never want my words copied without a resource or citing that pointed me out. Once we all see it like that, we will feel compelled to follow the rules. In the meantime, we must support one another by recognizing subtly that someone has faltered. If we don't we end up slamming them and their reputation and it can be devastating to those who didn't intentionally try to dismay the writer's society. I appreciate your comment. I do know the seriousness. Believe me... I am an APA and MLA pro!
thoth.. I know.. I know...

FusunA.. thank you. I am reading your take now. Well done!

Lunchlady 2.. Thank you.
Tom... I couldn't agree more. Mistakes need to be recognized.. yet, people and their reputation shant be destroyed out of anger. I was appalled at all the backlash. Julie was right.. this is an open forum, yet, we must encourage the respect of attribution. Thank you for stopping by. Thank you!

J Hart.. AMEN!!! Thanks,
"Please, please please let us all encourage one another to grow, to learn and to appreciate the great works of those we are inspired by, and those we can continue to become mentors to."

I am so naive I still believe that we CAN encourage one another to grow. The alternative to believe this is too hideous for me to imagine.

Thanks for a well-tempered post!

As a newspaper editor, I just posted a quick beginner's guide to avoiding plagiarism. I hope this helps some future writers avoid being accused of such an act. It's here: http://open.salon.com/blog/smalltownwriter
Thanks for your post N. Jordan. Rated.
Emma... we are not denouncing the importance of recognizing plagiarism, we are strictly recognizing that we all need to be aware that when someone falters, we should recognize it to them and strictly to them. It is all about constructive criticism without butchering one's fidelity. I understand the frustration. Writers, teachers, professors and doctorate's of English are all in favor of punishing the plagairist, however, we need to recognize the versatility of the folks here, and encourage best practices and honest attribution, if we falter in doing so, the message won't continue and the writer's work in the past, present and future will be violated.

I appreciate your comment, please just remember, it is a serious topic, and we need to move forward with teaching the importance, not belittling the faltered choice.
You think that I don't think that plagiarism s a serious topic? Really? As someone who has spent a lifetime writing, editing and teaching others to write? Some of the people who've commented here have said more than once in print that it is an "honour," and I'm quoting, if someone steals their work since they are not getting paid for it anyway. This, on an artists' site. It boggles my mind. A lot of people who jumped on the "it's OK to plagiarize bandwagon" have not seen the light; they are NOT getting message and there is ample proof of that even today.

Trust me, no one takes this more seriously than I do.
Kit.. Thank you!!! I deeply appreciate your comment. You are not naive.. you are brave, courageous and inspired just like I am. We are both encouragers, and want people to grow and continue sharing their world in their print, and through their visualizations we all read. I am a believer in spreading the word and becoming a part of a culture of people who want to grow and mentor one another.

smalltownwriter... YES!!! I just saw your post. Thank you. We need people like you to continue to show us that we can all use a little refresher from now and again. Brilliantly said. I am going to your site now!!!
Oh, and the plagiarizer in question has a history of asking for PMs, then making them public when he doesn't like what they say. Going private with him is a tactic does not work, and that is also a fact.
Emma... I trust you. I agree with you more than I may come across. You are making valid points. I don't want any less than the plagiarism to be brought forth. I just don't think a major back haul is the way to do it. There is something said about how people learn, we must teach not isolate.
Emma... point taken. I understand. I am reaching out to all the folks here.. just sending a message to encourage teaching, not belittling.
