"We might just make it. Did that thought ever cross your brain? Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this shithole island spending the rest of my life talking to a god damn VOLLEYBALL."
Chuck Nolan
Cast Away
2000
An escape or a wake up call? A travel in time, or a slight detour? Cast Away was definitely one of those "test me, follow me" situations. We are tested at different calibers. Tested to make sense out of the complexity of life, and mirror it to the simplicity of existence. Is it a follow me to understanding, or a follow you to find the meaning?
I often at times ponder why we are meant to test the boundaries we've given ourselves. I wonder why we are faced with tests that put power against will and will against power. While testing our leadership skills Question is:
Can you survive as a cast away?
I thought Hanks' performance in this film was remarkable. His physical transformation, his intense persona on film, and his desire to be one in that character gave me a sense that Hanks is capable of practically anything. He is capable of taking risks and performing in any given circumstance
I have to admit, the story was one of those that took audiences on a tour of self actualization. It was one of those films that touched on simplicity and independence. It demonstrated that the human mind, body and soul can adapt, and the comfort of ones soul has to persevere in order to survive and find strength in rescue.
I look at the character of Chuck Nolan. A man delivering packages around the world, yet becomes as lost as a package when his plane crashes. I observe the anomalies to the story of travel and time and expectations. I invest in knowing the comfort level of getting what I want and when I want it. But, if there was a slight detour in the expectation... how would I handle it? How would I adapt?
Does love keep someone going? Does survival mean that you are loved by someone?
It pains me to see the character of Chuck Nolan as a man struggling to find himself and his purpose for survival. It pained me to see that time can keep someones memory, but that memory is not about a future.
Wilson was and is a staple for this film. Friendship, loyalty and even imagination can keep a man sane, yet, give enough strength to find a commitment to survive.
Who's your Wilson?
