Will
About a Boy
2002
In trying to find a way to prove the Hugh Grant acting stereotype wrong, I stumbled upon this film a few years ago. It was a different look into a character portrayed by Hugh Grant. It was a tried and true example of how sometimes our greatest teachers are those that see life so innocently. Life seen through that of a child.
When the realizations of life are apparent, sometimes the intricate struggles of a boy and the reality of a man become somewhat interchangeable.
Hugh's character Will was cynical, slightly immature and realistically childish. When a boy, Marcus, becomes his best teacher, growing up doesn't necessarily mean you have to grow older, or age, or get bigger. It means you have to take your choices for what they are and become bigger than what is internally perceived.
Think about a time when you had to grow up faster than you anticipated. Think about a time when you wish you could just grow up quickly and instantly. Was it to get your license, move out of your parents house, or vote? For some it was to get to 21 as fast as possible to be able to legally drink. For others, we are faced with a culture of aging. A culture surrounded by staying young and capturing the essence of the youth before we age too quickly and become "old".
I would have to agree that endless youth is rare and perpetual aging is inevitable. Can ones youth become the catalyst to changing ones adult behavior?
The innocence in this film was the actuality in the topic of friendship. Our teachers are teaching us history and showing us how to incorporate those lessons into our every day existence and challenges. Our children are teaching us patience, and how to incorporate communication in our everyday challenges.
When we choose to listen we choose to learn. When we choose to ignore, we choose to forget what is important.
About a boy was about a man. About a boy was about a thought. The aging can grow when the innocence of a child seems so ageless. The youth can be revisted when seen that in all circumstances you just have to step back and see who you were to incorporate who you want to become.
Reinventing ones spirit is often overlooked by having to age with a growing soul for acceleration to adulthood. Imagine life without age and embrace life by finding your youth.

Matt, I was surprised with this film. It was indeed one that got me over analyzing its plot line. But, still a great story.
