"Can't you give her something for the pain?"
Samuel Faulkner
Nine Months
1995
How do you know when you are ready for something catastrophic? How do you know when something with preconceived emotional ties becomes a part of your existence?
In the film Nine Months, Samuel Faulkner (Hugh Grant) is faced with the news of a lifetime; he is going to be a parent. His girlfriend, played by Julianne Moore, is overly excited and overtly prepared, whereas Samuel struggles with the actuality at hand and becomes a bit reactive through shock.
I think about life and how things surprise us. I think about those surprises and how they minimize our own expectations. It is humbling to know that life is that revolving door of expectations, failed expectations and ultimate repercussions.
Each day we take the chance of risking a routine or plan with a surprise. Most people generally seem elated to the surprise in ones day, and others seem a bit jaded to the events of ones comfort level. Handling a surprise that may alter ones life eternally is often at times handled in stages.
1. Shock
2. Denial
3. Shock
4. Questioning
5. Shock
As you can see, one tries to move past the shock by denying and questioning. When one accepts the shock, and moves past the denial and questioning stage, you can start to work through the next few stages.
1. Acceptance
2. Enjoyment
3. Fulfillment
4. Excitement
5. Revelation
I recall knowing that my life would change because of actions taken. The conceptual idea that life is ever changing with regards to actions, is not a shock factor; its a reality.
So shock the hell out of someone today. It will be interesting to see their rebuttal.
