"I'm speaking plain penguin!"
Mumble
Happy Feet
2006
Do you hear what I am saying to you? Do you hear what I am talking about?
How many times are we so afraid of the words we hear, that we stop listening? How often does one want to hear the "right" thing during those "wrong" times? Just when do we stop trying to put words in others mouths and start to actually let them speak?
The greatest thing about Happy Feet is the concept of being true to oneself and sharing that happiness with others. Life is this dance, someone leads and someone follows. Someone does a little twist and turn and someone waits to be lifted up in the air.
Can the two feet bring just as much synchrony as four feet?
What does one need to do a little dance in the rain? What does one need to do a little dance from the bed to the shower? Can life be a dance that is as touching as a penguin seeking to find their place in life?
Mumble was such a sweet character, leading this coalition to happiness and of course movement towards some change. Mumble taught me a lot about me in a way. Like I was on this mission to find rhythm and heart and soul and funk in something. Can one relate to Mumble on another level? Can one relate when the words mean nothing, and the action is just as empty?
I often think animation is used to portray these characters softly, like they are real and they are kind, yet, a human would not be able to show this emotion through words or presence just because of circumstance. Animation allows anyone to put themselves in a character. All you have to do is imagine and think about how you relate.
The goal in narration is to hear your own voice, the voice that is ready to answer to someone. Think about who you answer to. Is it a dance or is it perhaps more? Maybe it is just a tango.... Viola'
