The IOC and politics

Rate: 4 Flag

This post is inspired by today's column by King Kaufman on China’s full-scale retreat from their promise of being open and free for the Olympics, and the IOC’s Clintonian definition of the word “freedom”. (Less emphasis on the “free”, and more on the “dom”, pronounced “dumb”.)

My feelings can be summed up in one simple sentence: Anyone who is surprised by this turn of events needs to get out more.  As Kaufman points out, the IOC has a long history of coming down on the wrong side, all the while insisting that they are above “politics”.  I’ve come to the conclusion that I would enjoy the Olympics more if it were not for the IOC. I love watching athletes from all countries Go For It, many of them just for the sheer love of the sport, but I hate that they answer to icky old men who have their ostrich impressions down pat.

Seriously, when they announced that Beijing won the 2008 Olympics, I knew this was going to happen. Actually, it’s not that I’m all that bright, it's just that everyone on the planet ,who is NOT a member of the IOC, knew it. China is a totalitarian state, and totalitarian states don’t change over to free and happy states just because of some sporting event. If you believe that, you need to go feed your unicorn and get some better meds.

Of course the IOC ignored that whole Nazi thing, so what’s a little totalitarianism between friends? Let’s hug. Oh, there’s a knife in my back? I wonder who put that there?

Sochi in 2014 will be more of the same...
You are probably right, unfortunately. I'm wondering how much longer the Olympics will be able to run with the IOC in charge.
