Despite that fact that just about every candidate the runs for office these days talks about how government needs t be run like a business, they don’t’ really mean it, and the voters don’t really want it. Whenever government actually tries to act like a business, the howls of outrage can be heard for miles around.
Case in point, the US Postal Service wants to shut down it’s sorting facility that is only a few miles from my house. It’s no secret USPS has been bleeding money for years. And what does a business do when it’s losing money? It looks for ways to save money. And what is one of the best ways to save money? To close and consolidate facilities, of course. So our mail sorting facility is now on the chopping block.
However, closing a facility that has 140 jobs in an area with unemployment ranging from 13-20% is always going to result in howls of protest. If government really was to be run like a business, they would ignore all the whining and just close the place down. But the USPS is not a business; it is a government entity, so now our completely worthless congressman, who campaigns on a limited government/pro-business platform every 2 years, is now going to get involved. This is the same man did not vote for health care reform, due to his “concerns over the rising deficit”, but the post office losing a few billion a year doesn’t seem to faze him much.
I do feel bad for the people losing their jobs, I have been there and done that myself recently. But, given how this area has consistently voted conservative/limited government/let business do anything they want, I am having a really hard time getting my panties in wad over it. Seems to me that they are getting exactly what they have been asking for all along. I guess that old cliché about being careful what you wish for is actually one that has some teeth. And those teeth are big, pointy and sharp.
