Johnny Got His Gun

Rate: 3 Flag

Dalton Trumbo's 1939 novel about WWI,  Johnny Got His Gun, was made into a harrowing film in 1971.  You can read about this amazing writer at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0874308/bio.

The film is hard to find, but worth it.  I am not going to reveal details about it here because the powerful images and story need to be experienced first hand.

If you care about peace, war, trauma to our soldiers, the American war machine - find a way to watch this film.  You will never forget it.

I never did, and it's been almost 38 years now.

My dad made me watch this when I was a young teenager. I only saw it the once, but dayum! It does make an impression.

Hmm. I wonder if the local video store has it ...
If your local video store has it, let me know! You gotta google it.
It will be worth your while to watch it again. Would that we could show it on HBO or on Bill Moyers or somewhere. I believe that film can change minds - and this one is a powerful one.
Never saw the movie but the book was tremendous. I just checked and the movie (1971) is coming out on DVD in late April, available on CDUniverse, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc.
Never saw it, but read the book in high school (on my own: not required reading). Awesome stuff! I can see why Trumbo got blacklisted by the Hollywood cowards.
Thanks for reading my "Baby Shoes" post and commenting on it.
I rated.
I first heard of this book through Metallica's song "One." They had clips of the film throughout the video. I seem to remember Jason Robards. I've never been able to find a copy of the film. Loved the book and the song though.
You should read the BOOK! It has never left me.
