Lori's Big Heart - A Fable

Rate: 44 Flag

Lori_Had a Big Heart _084

Lori was a happy girl
She always had a smile on her face
And a kind word for everyone

  Lori_Had a Big Heart _070

Lori had a big heart
Though everyone knew it
They never realized how big it was

Lori_Had a Big Heart _071

Lori took it everywhere with her
Even though it ached sometimes
Even though it was tender sometimes

Lori was generous with her heart
When one of her friends was feeling bad
She would gladly give them a piece

Lori_Had a Big Heart _072

 Everyone thought Billy was mean
Lori knew he was just scared
That his new dad would hurt his mom

Lori gave him a piece of her heart
Billy smiled
Lori smiled

Lori_Had a Big Heart _074

 Everyone thought Johnny was slow
Lori knew he was a genius who was bored
And needed to be challenged more

Lori gave him a piece of her heart
Johnny smiled
Lori smiled

Lori_Had a Big Heart _073

Everyone thought Eddy was a cry baby
Lori knew he was worried his friends would find out
He still wet the bed sometimes

Lori gave Eddy a piece of her heart
Eddy smiled
Lori smiled

Lori_Had a Big Heart _0745

She was happy that she could make them smile
By simply giving them a piece of her heart
She loved them—each for a special reason

Lori_Had a Big Heart _075

One day Lori looked around to find
She had given away too many pieces
And her own heart was now quite small

Lori_Had a Big Heart _076

Billy discovered that Johnny had a piece
Johnny found out that Eddy had a piece
And Eddy realized Billy had a piece

Lori_Had a Big Heart _078

They no longer felt special, they were angry
They talked behind her back
They even made up stories about her

Lori_Had a Big Heart _077

 Lori heard the talk
She did not understand why they lied
It made her feel sad and alone

Lori_Had a Big Heart _080

Other people heard the talk
People who Lori had helped in the past
People who knew the rumors weren’t true

Lori_Had a Big Heart _081

One by one they came
From far and from near
To give Lori a piece of their own hearts

Lori_Had a Big Heart _079

Lori thanked them and loved them all
And patched up her heart the best she could
But it was never quite the same again

Lori_Had a Big Heart _082

When her friends came to her
And asked if they could have another little piece
she told them she had none to spare

Her friends wished they could go back
And take away the bad things they said about her

But the damage was done

Lori_Had a Big Heart _083

Lori stopped giving her heart away so freely
Her friends no longer smiled like they used to
And neither did Lori

Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. The heart's a delicate organ... and how much is too much to give... and what happens if you keep it all to yourself? Rated even if it hurts.
for the very reasons she gave away pieces of heart (other people's pain) those people stomped on it. and the moral of the story, Mr. Duane?
I admire this (and you).
I think Lori's heart is beautiful, a little worse for wear but then most hearts are if they've been around long enough. You made me want to put my arms around Lori and try to make her smile and forget about the rumors. Well done, Duane!
I love your art work!

Lovely drawings. Not sure what to say about the story except I am sorry for the person intended. R
Yikes. Well written, my friend.
Oh how wonderful! This would make a fabulous children's book. But how about another ending about the heart regrowing itself? 'Cause it does, you know...it really does.
PS Perhaps cliche, but I have found true, the broken places are where the light shines through.
Didn't Lori find that each time she gave away a piece of her heart, what remained grew larger? I wish she had . . .
The heart is a fragile and sometimes fickle thing. Great Stuff!!
R~~
What Nikki said.
I'm still waiting for mine to grow back...
Nice fable here Duane and yes, love the artwork!
xoxoxo,
stop making me tear up at work.

rated as always - such a simple story and so beautiful. thank you for posting this.
I want the ending to be different . . . I think it can be. But for the purpose of THIS story, it's just right. The art and the story are quite a match - as always.
man this was heartbreaking because it felt so true. I'm fucking crying.

Although this is a message for adults, this would make a wonderful children's book. Duane, I hope "Lori" isn't you.
Duane, your talents are formidable. This is so sad and so lovely--a stunning piece. Janis Joplin in my head. And Joe Henry's "Scar." Do you know it?
it might grow back... but never the same.
Excellent, as usual
What a glorious piece of artistry.
Some people treat rumors so frivolously, yet the damage can linger for a lifetime.
Mean boys. Hope they learned a good lesson.

Cool art, Duane.
Why do people start rumors? What is the motivation behind one person or two (or more) tearing down another? It is well to be reminded that some people are users, takers, and "rumor-mongers." It is better to remember examples of pure goodness, like your little miss Lori. Hearts sometimes can be re-built, but as your story illustrates, the trust factor is never quite the same.
And such is the nature of maturing in society.
Lovely, true, and deeply moving.....
This is like a children's book for grown ups. But the message is for all ages. rated for beauty and truth
Wonderful and grand.
Rated.
You happily give a little, the people want more, and before you know it, there is nothing left. The giver has no more to give...The giver must protect his/her self.
I like what rita says about the broken places are where the light can shine through. I also believe that a heart, once broken and now mended, is stronger than before, much like a broken bone. But the heart is even more resiliant...
Giving away is wonderful. But it's nice to get back too.
Your brain is amazing. Thanks for giving us chunks of it all the time. This story, for its gruesome twist despite the cheery artwork is sofa king brilliant, I can't even find a good word.
You got me on this one... ~~real tears~~
Thank you! HUGS!!
Good one Duane. I hope Lori will soon regain her smile, after all it's got lots of pieces from others.
My good man, I want a beautiful colour print-out of this so I can sit down and read it with my boy. It's sad and beautiful and true.
What a great kid's book. For that matter I know a few adults who could benefit as well.
I'm so glad WSFTC posted this. What a heart wrenching story (if you'll pardon my saying so.) But look at that last heart. A gorgeous patchwork quilt. Made all the more beautiful because it's made of everyone else's hearts.

Beautiful artwork, beautifully written.
This totally works. I'm OK with the other kids being all boys, although I chuckled at the previous comment. Thinking that what you're doing is giving away your heart always ends in heartbreak. Lots of people think that's what happens when they're nice to others. This kind of kind person sees that people in pain NEED someTHING, so someTHING needs to be given.

This is bad communal politics. Lori had no one to watch her back. The communal gestalt was not on her side because she didn't align herself with it. She could have done that AND acted on her lovely intuition. She was unaware that such a thing as a group gestalt exists. She believed she was a lone player, and even after others wanted to make her feel better she still believed in that world view.

This is a GREAT children's book. It has plenty to debate about. I really think you should push for a literary agent and get this published.
I loved this story, all the more because it's making me sit here and think about whether I agree with the end. And I don't. I like to believe that my own heart is stronger for the patches... that I am a better teacher for having lived my own season of ugly rumors... that my heart contains more joy at having a child home now that I have known the bewildered heartbreak of losing him for a time... Thank you for the book-club style discussion you inspired in my own mind, and I hope you won't mind if I one day share your story with a particularly thoughtful group of teens in hope of some good discussions and realizations. (And thanks to Jodi for pointing the way to a beautifully-crafted story.)
I can't believe I missed this post. Thank you, Jody, for including it in your top 10 list, where it deserves to be. Wonderful, Duane!
This is wonderful. It reminds me of Shel Silverstein's work. Lovely pictures, lovely writing, and a home truth.

I second Steve's thanks to Jodi.
