Idiocy surrounds and nurtures us

Rate: 16 Flag

The health care debate rages on, and the conservative right never ceases to amaze me with their idiotic and bigoted statements about a social issue that was solved decades ago by poorer, ‘less advanced,’ less developed, supposedly less progressive countries who enjoy national universal health care that (despite the media hype) is in many ways better and is definitely more available and affordable than our richly bloated American health care system, which might be technologically superior but is universally mis-managed for the gluttonous profit of giant insurance corporations, pharmaceutical corporations, and private industry rather than for the benefit of our hard working, underpaid, under appreciated American citizens.

We don’t need to look far, if we look fairly (witness the universal health care systems of Canada and the U.K., both staunch allies with ideologies and economies not so far fetched from ours) to see that socialized medicine is neither fascist propaganda nor an Orwellian death trap.   We also now have a President who is half black and half white; a man; a good man; a U.S. President caricatured by some as a monkey who deserves to be shot; and compared to Adolf Hitler by others.

Idiocy and intolerant, bombastic, mean spirited, awful bigoted bullshit.   I am embarrassed for my country.   I am embarrassed and disgusted by how insanely bigoted and narrow minded some people are here in the ‘land of the free,’ which isn’t.

And this is but part of the sad state of affairs we find ourselves enmeshed in.  The rich ruling elite would have every one of us become thoroughly impoverished and in bottomless debt and total despair, relying upon our small stash of paper money that is every day becoming more and more difficult to earn and yet more and more worthless.  We are uninsured and unable to afford decent medical care in a health care system that is based upon DISease rather than health; we are uncertain of the political process to the point that we question even the votes we cast in our national elections; amazed and horrified and disgusted and outraged that our Congress is giving away hundreds of billions to financial institutions who over indulged in ruinous, self serving business practices and are then handsomely rewarded (even by the current administration) for being irresponsible and unaccountable; all in the transparent guise of saving our national economy.

We are living in an environment that is every day being more savaged by gluttonous developers who would cut down every tree and cover the Earth in poorly constructed buildings, roads and parking lots, seeking nothing but growth and their own fattening profit.  We are eating processed foods from a super sized grocery store rather than organic food from a garden; our water is polluted; our air is polluted; and our soils are depleted.  Soon we will be fighting wars over potable water.  Meanwhile, we are sending our sons and daughters to Iraq to fight and die for Middle Eastern oil, so we can pollute the Earth with more petrochemical exhaust and sludge; and to Afghanistan to fight and die in a war that is waged not for freedom or even strategic advantage, but opium, and the hundreds of billions of dollars generated from a drug trade managed by the CIA.  Our empire is crumbling while our foreign competitors indulge and pollute even more rapaciously than we ever did, leaving us in their world wide toxic dust.

The Federal Reserve is printing money for nothing 24/7 and we are buying it at interest.  We are no longer the world leaders we once were in nearly every category; we email and blog and text and twitter instead of communicating face to face; we are underpaid for our talents and overtaxed by a government that no longer represents us; and the price of everything has gone through the roof.  The numbers are staggering now, and we feel more and more like machines instead of human beings; then Congress passes legislation that allows us to tow in our old cars and go further into debt by buying a new one.

Sheer relentless, unadulterated idiocy.   Please be sure to call your Congressperson and thank them.

It’s like the former Soviet Union all over again but right here at home, only better now, because it’s all American; new and improved, stagnant and comatose with a skim coat of fresh concrete and an ideology that espouses everything we once were, but aren’t anymore; and we still get all teary eyed when the politicians speech about American values and the independent man, who is now an enemy of the state.

bump. I might go on, but our attention span is somewhat limited as well. No sense in taxing us any further.
So depressing. So true.

But hugs to you since I haven't seen you in a while! Hope you're doing okay and your travels have been good.

Off to find something to smile about today,
Another sound mind speaks common sense about idiocy. Where have you been? Stick around, we need more sane voices.
Sadly, there is a lot of truth to what you say. We have all spun out of control, here, from one extreme to the next, by degrees, by and large, to where we are now. So many fingers to point the blame, so little time and resources to fix the problems that are multiplying like H1N1. Where's it all headed?
i'm not sure the problem at this point is reactionary hicks so much as fake liberals who want Obama to be as naive and arrogant as they are.
You have some really great points here. Many that all of us need to take a look at. Great post!
Excellent post and well-written, but what a bummer, man!

Reality is always so much less comforting than what we choose to believe.
Thanks for pointing out the insanity of it all, Bruce. Human greed has brought us to this point and all on the backs and labors of those who are, for the most part, not greedy. Just duped and used beyond our expiration date.
I certainly don't blame all of our follies on the right, but I see nothing on that side that is remotely positive regarding anything that adds any remedies to our dire situation. I just see obstruction over politics to the detriment of us all. Why is it fine to give money to corporate big wigs, but when it comes to doing something for the people, it's all Hitler and Nazis BS? It's totally baffling, yet I see it clear as day.
Sorry, Bruce. I forgot to mention what a well written, well thought out piece this is.
Thank you all for your comments. Yes, behemothic change... Our history books don't even teach us about our own labor movement. If you haven't read it, please (everyone) read Howard Zinn's "(A) People's History of the United States," which is a rendering of history from the common man's perspective;
history through the eyes of the farmer in the field (rather than the industrialist who used them, and their sons and daughters in a crowded city factory) or the soldiers in the field, shedding their blood (something about the field) rather than through the eyes of the general up on the hill, or more recently in a bunker hundreds (or thousands) of miles away. Click. Bang. Whatta hang.
(...and two hours later...) served with creme fraiche, atop my grandmother's Swedish apple pie, just outa the oven; made from apples plucked from Margaret's little oasis on the Sunshine Coast. Fallen apples; plucked not from the tree (well, mebbe a few) but picked up offa the ground. The fallen. Took awhile to clean 'em; and not just Mormor's standard issue Swedish apple pie. This one had fresh picked blackberries fat 'n black 'n juicy
just perfect plucked, with bluebabies 'n more; and her special crust,
made with butter and organic whole wheat and B.C. raw sugar; with almonds, resulting in the most luscious apple crunch, crumbled.
Deep dish, both.

Never mind history for a moment.
We are wasting far too much of our time in paying attention to clowns, fools, and idiots. "Don't Feed The Trolls" is a concept that needs to apply to politics these days, but it's too much fun to watch them snap at the food, I guess.
Bruce-So much to fix in so little time. Never mind the politics, what about this earth? That's what has me crying! I know you've addressed the decimation of our planet; there is just SO much, if the problems are even correctable.

The Earth is our sweetest lover. She gives and gives... and we take and take. It's vitally important to give back. Compost. Recycle. Drive less, and lower your carbon footprint. Eat organically. Grow your own food. Never eat processed or prepared food. Don't say you're too busy. Buy locally. Try candlelight. Listen to wooden music. Turn off the television. Turn on your love light.

Let it shine shine shine.
...and refrain from idiocy.
I do realize, however, that this post and the comments herein will appeal only to those with enough common sense to refrain from idiocy in the first place. I just read Bill S.' open letter to the religious zealots from Kansas who traveled all the way to Vermont to spread their hateful intolerance abroad. Not all zealots are Muslim. Having lived in Vermont myself, I really appreciate the way Vermonters think and behave. Not all idiots are white.

Prejudice and intolerance and bigotry is not white. Racism is not white. Bad behavior is moronic in any color, and not permissibly just because you are black or brown or sky blue pink. Bigotry is something we were supposed to be taught about by our parents so we don't make asses of ourselves, or spread a dangerous doctrine of intolerance; and if our parents were bigots, or didn't teach us right from wrong, then shame on them; and it's up to us to grow beyond stupidity and selfishness and intolerance.
If we are white, given Euro man's history of callous colonialism and genocide, we should be doubly careful about our own behavior and opinions. Religious zealots from Kansas (or anywhere) should shut their pie hole and go home and pray to a God who is loving; not hateful. Pray for deliverance and enlightenment. Pray for an open mind. People who compare Obama to a monkey should meditate on their own genetic code. There is likely to be a monkey in your family tree, and your intolerant behavior is proof; although that's unfair to the monkey, who is more peaceful and loving than you.

Monkeys generally have more common sense than many humans.
Many thanks for the excellent post, Bruce, as well as the shout out in the comments. I don't think I need to say I agree with you. :-D

If you believe in evolution, we all started somewhere in Olduvai Gorge. Follow your ancestral tree back far enough and we all have a common familial relationship.

If you believe in creationism, G-d created Adam and Eve, whom all people descended from, so we all have a common familial relationship.

What the hell is so hard about understanding we are all brothers and sisters standing on the edge of the abyss? And would the assholes in the back please stop pushing!!!

Thumbed.
Wooden music? Obviously, you've listened to one of my CDs somewhere.

How ironic that you're diatribe against wretched excess has drawn an ad from the insurance lobby, disguising their unmitigated greed as a fight against taxes on soft drinks -- an utterly unnecessary product which has done more than any other to contribute to America's epidemic of obesity.
Thanks, Tom. The insurance lobby is pretty slick; and if there's one thing we can count on in life, it's irony. On a related note, it also amazes me that people will avoid a well written post on a serious topic that affects us all; and yet flock to some stupid blog with bathroom jokes, or pictures of puppies and kittens. We all complain about things and call for change, but few take the time to contribute. However, I know you do, and for some time now I have admired the content of your posts. We see eye to eye on many issues. Again, many thanks to everyone here who posted a comment and rated and/or passed along a link to this blog. The only path to solutions is through sincere communication and the establishment of committed community. Thank you.
What can I say? Simply that this is one of your best, Bruce. But, like you said on Facebook, who is listening? Still, we must say what we can when we can regardless of the size of the audience if for no other reason than to be true to our own souls.

Monte
That is high praise, Monte thank you. I hadn't put it into that class, but I'm glad you liked it. Most of it seems so obvious to me, and I've covered nearly all of this in more detail in my precious blogs. Still being true, and true to myself, eh..? cheers
I worry about a group of people who at 11:00 pm with no one around but their accomplices pass a $780 Billion bill only to find out there's an accepted 10% unaccountability. That's $78 billion! Hey Obama, could you please send me a few million since no one will miss it?
And you have idiots out there like Pelosi who call me a terrorist for voicing my opinion?
I'm a conservative. I try to conserve energy that I use, conserve the food I eat, conserve the ways of my beliefs, and conserve America. We are the best country in the world.
Please don't give into people like Van Jones who is one of Obama's czars who is a proclaimed comunist. America has no room for people like him, and we should not be enticed to believe that large government will do us good.
A govenment that is large enough to give you everything is large enough to take everything.
I meant previous, not precious... heh heh, but precious will do. CleanFacets, Congress is all about unaccountability. That's what they do; and they do it so well.
