There are incredibly devastating developments in the economy that even liberals should be concerned about, but hardly a word here about them.

I remember a piece I put up here about Obama using the teleprompter at home, while in bed with Obama and telling good night stories to the kids. Bill Beck took the opporunity to excoriate me in a special post for "attacking" the kids, who are off limits. Well, it wasn't an attack, it was a mention.

Where is this self proclaimed champion of the children of our politicians on the disgusting "joke" Letterman made about Palin's daughter. They spin it with oh, she's over eighteen. Pleeze ... it's a disgusting joke that would not be made about a liberal politician's daughter.

Glad I waited to comment. There's little doubt the joke was in poor taste, even if about the older kid. However, as a National Symbol for the great "liberal-conservative" battle...it's a laugher...but then so is the 'battle."

Jen thanks for posting. It may be a little bit of a stretch but essentially I don't think its that far off the mark. If you were to use a picture of a 14 year old engaged in sex in some type of artistic media you would be facing charges. But for some reason Dave is free to use the concept of a minor having sex in his comedy routine without crossing into that arena. There should be some outrage here. Leave the underage family members out of the arena of adult humor.

Letterman was out of line and apologized as well. He says he didn't know about which daughter the joke was about and I believe him. Keep in mind while that you would believe Limbaugh or Hannity or O'Reilly under the same conditions. Don't deny it.

Sarah Palin supporting abstinence does not justify making a joke about a 31 year old baseball player having sex with an underage minor. Politics is a fun game for people to engage in. Just because Palin believes in abstinence does not justify a joke about her daughter getting "knocked up". If her daughter ran for office then she would be fair game. Targeting the daughter in such a tasteless fashion is dispicable.

I think the palins have been pretty good sports about the whole issue. If Letterman made a joke about my daughter getting "knocked up" I'd be sure to give him a thorough ass beating as the cameras were running. It would give him the ratings he craves only not in the fashion he hoped for.

It was out of line to tell Chelsea Clinton jokes. It was out of line to hammer the bush twins for being hammered in college. It is out of line to go after Palin's kids, and it will be out of line to go after the Obama girls.

Children of public officials are the most innocent of bystanders and yet get nailed with frequency. No 18 year old kid should have to endure national ridicule for having gotten pregnant. It's way, way out of line.

Here's one liberal who won't defend him. Both sides were nasty in their comments on women (of any age) this past election cycle. It's not acceptable and he should have been fired. I don't care how powerful he is. In our society (unfortunately) a joke about someone's 18 yo boy knocking someone up would have been meant as a compliment- 'look at him go' with backslapping. However, to say that about someone's daughter is basically saying that they raised a slut and must be po' white trash. Not said directly- but still implied. The double standard between men and women are well known and obvious to anyone who has grown up in this culture- including Letterman and his writers. They knew exactly what they were doing, and it was attacking adults through calling their child a slut. That should be unacceptable.

In the not too recent past, a "good mother" would have done everything possible to keep her daughter out of the limelight. Not Sarah Palin, however, as she is solely about publicity for the Palin name at all costs. Recently, this includes bringing an association of "rape" in David Letterman's joke onto ger 14 year old daughter, Willow. Any thining person knows that Letterman was referring to Bristol . He was caught up in misinformation as to which daughter was with the parents at the game or didn't much care who was the butt of his tasteless joke. Either way, Palin herself opened the doors to make fun of her offspring by bringing them into and keeping them front and center under the bright lights shown on her political aspirations.

I think David Letterman was wrong to make the joke, but he would not have bothered (or thought about it) if Sarah Palin had not already subjected her daughter to a level of public scrutiny that has likely forever stigmatized poor Bristol. I feel sorry only for the young women and the trashing of their self-esteen for their mother's benefit.
