At the Zoo with Roo

I went to a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at the Columbus Zoo last night and had the opportunity to hold a seven month old kangaroo (joey).  He is being hand-raised by the zoo staff.  They keep him in a fabric pouch much of the day to mimic his mother’s pouch.  When a kangaroo is born he is as small as a lima bean and stays in his mother's pouch for nine months before starting to venture out for small periods.  It  was thrilling to hold this baby Roo.  He was incredibly soft and gentle.

At the Zoo with Roo
The magnificence of nature
A heartbeat away,
 Cradled in human arms,
Trusting no harm
Will befall
In a place
Where the order
Of things
Sometimes flips,
Where docents rear young
Keeping watch in the night
With a small nursery light;
Raising young Roo
At the zoo.

How lucky you were!! What a great picture he looks so soft and cuddly.
A newborn kangaroo the size of a lima bean? I didn't know that. I wondered how they could stay in their mother's pouch for so long, and that explains it. Thank you, Rita. I love your poem and that darling picture. I hope the fundraiser was a success.

You're so brave! Even little, don't they kick like crazy? It looks so sweet in the photo - loved your poem.
Thank you, Lunchlady, he was soft and cuddly. Such a special moment.

Thank you, FusunA. If you want to read more, you can check out Wikipedia. Lots of info about kangaroos. The fundraiser was a huge success. Jack Hanna was there as well which made it very exciting. He brought a cheetah along for a little excitement!

nilesite, there was no kicking. He's was really swaddled in the denim pouch and seemed very content to be held. Thanks for your kind words.
He looks really cute! I can see why people want to cuddle wild creatures when they're babies!
A roo at the zoo just for you--how do you do?
Moments like that are Gifts!

Oh, thank you for sharing this tender moment, illustrated with this sweet, warm photo, and sensitive, gentle words. R
ccdarling, you are so right. It's hard to imagine them being six foot tall when they're so sweet and cuddly.

I like that John, thanks for commenting.

M.C.S., you are so right. It was truly a blessing to hold him.

Thank you so much, Michelle. It was unfortunate that there weren't any children there that night because they would have loved this opportunity as well. I appreciate your kind words.
Oh my gosh...very inspired to go to the zoo. I don't think I have been there in at least 25 years. Putting it on the agenda for the summer. :)
Like a big bunny with a punch! Neat pic R.
