If I Could

If I could write a song,

I would find notes and chords

to ease the sorrow in your heart.

If I could paint a picture,

I would mix colors to match the sunrise

then give you a canvas

brushed with the dawn.

If I could sail,

I would steer my boat across the sea

and return with soothing tides

captured in a bottle.

If I could find a sage

to explain the mysteries of life and death,

I would pay a king’s ransom

for his erudite words,

then bring them to you in a box

with a gilded lid.

If I could find the right words,

I would speak to your pain,

wrapping your sadness in lyrical prose;

pouring comforting words

‘round your wounded heart.

If I could bring your loved one back,

And allow him to live once more,

I would do that and more.

When there’s a loss so deep and raw

that nothing touches or heals,

then I would be your friend and stay with you,

sharing in your silence

until you wished to speak again.

Wow! So lovingly emotional; heavenly healing! Such a beautiful piece, Rita. MUST be on the cover. RRRRR
Thank you, Thoth. A dear friend lost her father last week and I realized once again how difficult it is to provide true comfort to someone who has lost an important person in their life. This poem came out of those thoughts.
Your words ached with love, Rita. You are a tender soul.
I wish you were my friend, so when this happens to me again, you would write this poem to me. You're a good friend, I can see.
So healing. Thank you in silence.
If I could find the right words,
I would speak to your pain,

I hope you sent her this..
HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
These are the words and phrases we all long for when we feel so helpless and don't know what to say or do for someone who's grieving.
To be able to hand your poem to the bereaved and say "this is how I feel" - I can't think of anything more honest or heartfelt. Full of grace and purity.
[r] patient and loving good will means so much and brings such comfort. a very real and lovely message well expressed. best, libby
Thank you for your kind comment, Matt.

Emily, such kind words. I feel a real kinship with many here, and I know there is a deep vein of support when sorrow strikes an OS member.

Thanks, zanelle. At some point in our lives, we will all need healing words.

Thank you, Linda. I plan to.

Margaret, I do think coming up with words of comfort is one of the most challenging things to do. I'm so glad you found them in my poem.

Thank you, Libby. Your kinds words are appreciated.

Thank you, Seer.
Thoth sent me. Fortunately for you he knows more about writing talent than all the would be pundits on OS combined. Unfortunately for you we have a collection of pretentious whores who have set themselves up as the literary gate keepers and you will never receive the recognition for your art until those among us who are the soldiers exterminate the diseased "intellects" who have bound and gagged the artists among us.
This is just perfect, Rita. I would like to keep it in a file to use (with attribution, of course) the next time I find myself wordless in support of a suffering friend.

Lezlie
Stunning. This is achingly poignant and lyrical. I can only imagine how tremendous this gift would be to your friend.
Rita, never have I read such a gift of words. This says, I think, what so many of us feel at times of tragedy and loss. That last stanza just brought tears. Tender, gentle, and full of love - both you and your words.....rated with great admiration.
sharing in your silence
until you wished to speak again.
yes best way to go, til the words come . til you learn to
sing
paint
sail.

you can do that in words tho!
I have many if I could's but I trust no one. Your poetry is always beautiful and words are something no one can take away from me. Reading and Writing is a bliss to me.
If I could I would take you out for a Valentines day Tea.
