ABC? Monkeys Could Do a Better Job Running your Network

Rate: 35 Flag

It is Sunday, and our TV viewing for the evening is planned. Are there any ABC shows in our line up tonight?

I think not. I am not even bothering with "Desperate Housewives" this year. After I saw the props for the "plane crash" last year I realized watching "The Young and the Restless" was a better deal. So what if you took Vanessa Williams from your other cancelled show "Ugly Betty" and threw her into the loop. Mark Cherry, I just don't care anymore.

I am a media statistics junkie, no doubt about it. Who else has the  Nielsen and TV ratings sites bookmarked?

To tell you the truth ABC, you really disappoint me. All that Disney money, and this is the best you can come up with?

You made me wait for months to watch any new episodes of "Lost" and "V". What was that all about? Did you not notice that everytime you did that you "lost" viewers? Or did it go over your head?  Okay, now let's talk about the shows you cancelled.

Let's see...where do I start?

"V?"  Yes, you tried to ditch it, but then gave it a "pity" renewal. Then there was: "The Gates", "Pushing Daisies", "Life on Mars", "Eastwick", "Invasion", "Boston Legal", and the list goes on.

Now let's talk about our beloved "Boston Legal". It is correct to say it had been on for a few years, but the reason out there for cancelling it was because the people watching the show were over 40.

Yes, I guess that is a "no no", because we old folks don't buy all those new fangled things featured in some of your ads. Now, Mr. Shatner is on the new show "$h*! My Dad Says".

Well personally, that show is not all that funny and it should have stayed on Twitter. Yes, it was one highest rated shows last week, but I can see it crashing faster than the Yodeler on "The Price is Right".  After all, "The Big Bang Theory" was the lead in show. Okay, not your network, but Captain James T. Kirk still can pull them in, even if he is old.

queen

If the show Seinfeld had been on in recent years there is no way it would have become a cult classic. It's fate would have been cancellation after the first three episodes. If that had happened, maybe "Curb Your Enthusiasm" would not be on now.

You do not appreciate good writing. Let's take "FlashForward" for example. Quite possibly one of the best new shows last year. If you had stayed with it I know it would have captured some of the devasted "Lost" fans. But you didn't. Yes, you just cancelled it just like "Happy Town". Do not even get me started with that show. You could not even find room to air the last two episodes. I wanted to sic "The Magic Man" on you, as I was forced to watch the last two episodes online.

Do you know what I am doing now because I am so upset that "Lost" is gone? I am watching " Hawaii 5-0" just to see Jin . Last Saturday I fondled the new Weezer CD with Hurley's picture on it, and cannot wait to see him  on "How I met Your Mother."

Yes ABC, I agree you have your "Dancing With the Stars" and "Extreme  Makeover-Home Edition." But your viewership is aging, and do you really think they know who "The Situation" is?  The fact they voted off David Hasselhoff on DWTS last week boggled my mind. I honestly think it boggled Mr Hasselhoff also.

  whats

I am going to tell you the truth. I did not start watching "Modern Family" until mid season last year because I was afraid. Yes, afraid to love this show, only to get hurt if you cancelled it like a scorned lover. It is clearly one of my favourite shows now. Please do not do something stupid with it.

So tonight I am watching "Empire Boardwalk", "Mad Men", juggling "The Amazing Race", and then " Dexter" on Showtime.

Seems like a trend does it not? That is right, it is mostly all cable shows. They get critical acclaim, have 1-2 million viewers, and do not cancel a show after a couple of episodes. Most new shows are given an allotment of 13 shows, and have half the budget and staff of network shows.

So ABC, you and I have one heck of a toxic relationship now, and I am extremely leery of you. Instead of searching for the next best thing, let your new programs grow. You might be surprised!

To misquote one of my other favourite cancelled shows not on your network.

"If you save the cheerleader, you might just save the world."

Funny. And why I don't own a teevee.
I agree. I am almost afraid ro start liking a show, because it will get cancelled.Thank God for books.
Oh my god, Queen for a Day. Those furs! The fabulous Moulin Rouge! (What the hell was it, anyway?) I think I have to go let my hair's roots breathe now.
Green heron.. I wish I didnt either hahah
Dragonangel.. I opt for Open Salon..:)
Sixty.. I remember that show every day at 3 hahah
Agreed! I am so tired of dumbass shows like "The Bachelor"-you know, where women sleep with a guy on national TV in the hope he might propose. Kind if seedy, kind of gross. I keep thinking that their parents must be so proud of them-whoring on national television!
I also refuse to watch their shows because every time you like a show they cancel it! I do watch many cable shows, also! I think that ABCs programming is being picked out by some seemingly educated guys in ties, with the collective maturity of your average 12 year old! R
Why do people watch The Bachelor?
because their own lives are so boring? Or is it the voyeur in us all Libmomrn ?
I don't watch too many prime-time shows, but I can't remember the last time I was a faithful viewer of an ABC show: Happy Days? Home Improvement? Jeez. (Though I hear Modern Family is good.)
Happy Town?
Geesh, I have nothing to say :)
The modern method that reaches all mega corps today, great ideas, inferior work ability and ethic. It's like all the dates/boyfriends I've had lately, the effort is all in the wooing, there's no energy left for the relationship. We are in a world run by idea sprinters who babble at meetings.

Great idea men at ABC, not good at anything else. Perhaps the CEO of Toyota would like to give running a network shot! Get 'em Linda, grrrr... I'm still upset about Boston Legal and losing my two fiances, Alan & Denny. Now it's just me and Sheldon, bazinga!
Cranky Cuss.. Modern Family is your type of show..
There are now "viewing parties", arranged for Thursdays. Dr Sheldon Cooper, the boys and Penny are developing a huge audience here.

Bazinga!
May I suggest a good book? Or three? Great rant. r.
Rugrat.. I know Happy Town..:( ...:)
L'heure.. Bazinga indeed.. I really miss Boston Legal so much and seeing the man that had aspbergers on CSI Miami scares me..
:)
Catherine.. It is my fave show..I wish I would watch it with you
Jonathan.. OH NO.. I read a lot.. I just multi task..:)
Linda, I agree ABC stands for "All Beyond Caring", but can't blame them for dropping Flashforward or Happy Town - both were intriguing concepts, with some appealing stars, but suffered from overly convulted plots; poor plot consistency; and general lack of narrative tempo. add to this some mis casting (Joseph Fiennes - great actor, lousy Mark Benford), and they just made me miss Dollhouse even more.
Brian I agree.. but they had some sort of chance.
Heck there are so many OS writers on here that could help them.
At a cheaper cost.
Dollhouse.. another one..:(
This is the same network that gave us "The Road to 9/11," a thoroughly lie-ridden revisionist history of that attack and the events leading up to it, whose sole purpose was to make up whatever shit was needed to blame Bill Clinton for the Republicans' failure to deal with Islamist terrorism.

And "V" -- nothing but a slick remake of a laughably lame '80s miniseries -- was more right-wing garbage, thinly disguised. Mankind is under attack from evil aliens who give us national health insurance and denigrate religion? Replace "aliens" with "Antichrist," and you have "The Late Great Planet Earth" and "Left Behind." That's their idea of science fiction? And it came out in 2009, as Obama (accused of being alien -- and the Antichrist -- himself) was rolling out his healthcare plan and the "Christian" right were calling him a radical Muslim atheist. Coincidence? Yeah, so was the timing of that Glenbekistan rally.

Your post only covered the superficial suck. Strip away that veneer, and you'll see the fundamental suck.
Also, I gave up on DWTS when Donnie Osmond, who barely danced better than me, took a fall and the whole thing was covered up. Contrast that with Marie's fall, which was repeated all over the world more often than a winning touchdown at the Super Bowl. Double standard? Whatever gave you that idea? Then Donnie won, despite better dancing from black contestants who somehow never managed to win in any season. Racial preferences? Rigging the decision to give an over-the-hill square one more win? Whatever gave you that idea?
ABC donated something like 640K to baby Bush's campaign...sooo...ummm...xox
I'm not a TV snob; it's on all the time as background noise, at least. But I can sure understand why whoever that guy was called it a Vast Wasteland.

Lezlie
I tend to avoid most shows on network television these days because I'm tired of investing time on a show only to have it gone a few weeks later. Nowadays, if a show made it, I watch it on dvd from Netflix. At least then I know it made it a whole season. And I generally don't invest time unless it made it to the second season's finale.
ABC gave money to Bush Jr.? Are you kidding me?! That's about as dumb as a hooker paying her clients to use her. How much more incompetent can a network get? Wait, don't answer that...
Motherwell.. I never thought of V that way. You are so right.
maybe that is why they gave it the pity renewal?
As for DWTS.. rigged rigged.. rigged just like AI
Robin, I forgot all about that.. you are so right
Lezlie.. I have that or the CD player on for noise while I work. It's a teenage wasteland now

Duane.. that is why I was scared to watch Modern Family
Oh Motherwell, I won't.. you are just like me..:)
Kate E.. Once again you have me floored. I am sweating from my 22 block walk in the heat and read this and had to fan myself more hahaha. You watch football??:)
You are so interesting you should write more about you.
What I cant watch is HOUSEWIVES of various parts of the country..if I want to watch catfights (which I do not find amusing)I will sign myself into the nearest psych ward and/or jail! What a waste and what a bad influence on what is important in life, to our kids. Good write on ABC.
The Housewives are out of control.
Now we have Jersey Shore and we are going to have Lakeshore..
How many shores are we going to have Cindy?
L when do you watch TV? Unless you're like us one on in every room so we don't miss anything.UGG
LG, I have an online business that has lots of computer work to do. I have it on as noise basically but I do have some fave shows at night.
The problem is I am a junkie for everything media. So I read online, I check things out..
I never just sit there and stare out into space..:)
Oh yeah, "Desperate Housewives" is on ABC too. Whose idea was it to make a show consisting entirely of such unsympathetic characters? Seriously, these women are among the wealthiest suburbanites on Earth, and we're supposed to care about them when they act like petty immature bitches anyway? (And what did Dana Delany do to deserve such a lame role?) Or are we supposed to watch the show solely for the purpose of mocking and feeling superior to its characters? Because that's the only point to this sort of series that I can see.

And can we PLEASE get rid of that self-righteous voice-over? It used to be "new," but now it's old, and it's time to go back to old tricks that work, like "show, don't tell." If you need a sneering voice-over to tell me what I'm supposed to think of your characters, or the moral of your story, then you're either a crappy writer, or just too insecure to let your viewers think for themselves.
Flash Forward was the last straw for me. ABC is no longer an option in my house. Oh and my God....Happy Town? I LOVED THAT SHOW. I get the idea that good writing on ABC is like the kiss of death.
Sunday night IS cable night. My reading break on Sunday night was for True Blood. I already miss the blood, guts, hot vamps and hilarious dialogue.
There's hardly ever anything good on anywhere these days. I watch a lot of Animal Planet, because at least the dogs and cats aren't subject to bad writing. Rated.
Motherwell.. would you believe they have the character Phylis on the Y and R doing voice-overs now just like DH?
What a joke.. and it is on CBS..:)

Torman.. YOU LOVED HAPPY TOWN... OMG... I am coming over to your house hahaha

Memeishere.. True Blood.. I miss that show so much and back to watching the Season 2 DVD.

Caroline.. If the cats and dogs find out how much these bozos make they might consider it..:)
I watched 7 minutes of $h*! My Father Says. I know it was 7 minutes because the time popped up when I started searching for "something else" to watch. And it wasn't just the fact the show lacked the funny but that you could tell Mr. Shatner was reading from the cue cards just off camera. Otherwise I can't stand another crime drama or the big mystery shows, and no vampires or warewolves please.

At the same time I watched Rasing Hope and felt bad since anytime Fox airs something I really like they cancel it right away and replace it with some crappy reality show. So I guess I will enjoy it for the next week or two and then go back to watching BBC America.

Of course the good thing about so many crappy cookie cutter shows is that I turn the TV off and go do something else.
Ocular.. how they thought they could make that into a show I will never know..
Yup you can turn it off just like I am now and listening to music haha
yes thank god for books!
It sounds stupid even before I've typed it. But The Young & the Restless is actually a really good show. It's my "Shut Your Mouth and Don't Make Me Think Fun Time Hour".
William Shatner should have retired after doing "Boston Legal." That would have been a much more fitting and dignified endpoint to his career. (Are they still doing new episodes of "Boston Legal?")
Give 'em hell, Linda. Don't let them have any peace.
We used to howl at Queen For a Day. What a hoot. We don't watch TV anymore, but we do get Netflix and watch Frasier, some movies and documentaries. Great story, Linda. -R-
Poppi.. we have tons of books too. Titles that would make you smile.:)
Some classics and some real trash..:)

Asianshoebox.. I have watched / listened to that darn show since 1979

Motherwell.. nope, no new ones.. that was it.

Brassawe.. Did not take you long to figure out what I was all about did ya?:)
Christine.. and Art Linkletter used to come on right after.
Well, I did watch the premier of Desperate Housewives last night. Do not like the addition of Vanessa Williams at all...ugh. Then switched to "The Event," that may just be s small bandaid to us "Lost Losties." Not sure I can stomach another season of "Brothers ad Sisters." Yes, you said it and channel 7 is treading in thin ice.
Just Cathy.. I am going to have to watch that show The Event.. I saw Nikki S's review.
As for channel 7 the only time I watch it is to mock Dan's hair on the news..:)
I have thought the same about ABC. First the muck up the Wide World of Sports and lose their Olympic bid and now not a thing to watch. CBS is the place to be now.
Best Wishes,
Blittie
Our only regular ABC prime time show....Castle..that is it.
Blittie.. WW of S? I have not seen that in years

Liberal.. They gave Castle a pity renewal also.
What??? You're not watching the Packers whup up on da Bears tonite??? I am flabbergasted!!!
I taught myself how to play the piano because of bad TV. I also joined Netflix. Rated because I love reading your stuff.
Matt.. no I am not watching da bears..
Sarah.. well I read yours today and loved it but had no idea how bad it was for you at one point.:(
Really? You watched all of Happy Town? :) I got to the episode after the hawk breaks through her windshield and she messes around with that hot guy before calling it quits. :)
No matter the network, they get me, I'll start watching a show, like religiously, and it doesn't fail, they'll cancel the god damn show on me, but keep the crap!!!

Stupid networks!! And not just ABC!!

Rated.
Weighing Op... I most certainly did and I sit proudly here and admit it..:)

Tink.. Go right now and take over.:)
Like most major networks, ABC is so caught up in ratings/consultants, they throw out some of the best stuff. I've been caught in the same conundrum as you when it comes to loving a new show. "Pushing Daisies" was one of the finest shows to come down the pike in a while. Then it was unceremoniously killed. Ugh.

I invested in "Modern Family" and "Cougar Town" (a title that made me throw up in my mouth a little). The pay off has been good so far, but give the network time...they will bury them on an unsavory night when they find out that their watched by grown-ups. (R)
Nobody watches TV anymore.
OMG, I remember Queen for a Day! I was a little kid, but I do remember. Anyway that Shatner comedy was lousy. I caught some of it and at first I thought it was my mood ( you know), but then I realized it just stunk. Thanks for this well done piece....R
Kat, that is the problem.. They have people that do not know what they are doing.. Consultants my ass hahaha

Veronica.. take care of yourself
Boko.. I watch TV and I am not ashamed.:)
Sheila.. I used to cry when they announced Queen for a Day..:)
Amen, Sister! They should at least commit to a decent run. You're right that some of the greatest shows wouldn't have been given a chance to flourish in these times. They just keep frantically running around, throwing stuff at us, hoping for an instant hit. I wish they'd just develop good quality shows, put their trust in them and in us.
Bellwether.. I cannot imagine a world without Seinfeld reruns..:)
Love the vintage pics and the clip for Queen For A Day -- now there was a twisted show. As for network television, all I can say is: thank heavens for cable.

Anyway, gotta run and get myself some Rinse Away. My scalp has stopped breathing ...
Various.. how kind of you to share you hair care with us.
I am glad you feel like home here.. No I am..:)
Variety shows, I want variety shows! Like the kind Ed Sullivan had with trapeze artists, jugglers, singers and rockin' bands.

I know, I know it's not gonna happen so I have only two shows I watch, Madmen and a Canadian detective show filmed in Newfoundland called Republic of Doyle.
Scarlett, I am so with you.. The only Variety show they have now is re "America's Got Talent".. but they get rid of all the magicians..:)
Linda, this is such a smart, insightful commentary. I was pretty much through with ABC when they took off "Once and again" and picked up "The Bachelor". Excuse me if you're a fan, but I friggin' hate that show and anything like it. These days, most of my shows are on cable. I find that the art-commerce dynamic is more favorable to artistic expression on HBO, Showtime, FX, AMC, etc. Network shows are not much more than elaborate, glossy commercials, and since blatant commercialism is another thing I don't like, I find that I have fewer and fewer network shows on my DVR list every year.

I also do Empire Boardwalk and Dexter and I just started the first season of lost on my Roku device. It took me a few episodes to get into it, but now I'm hooked. I figure it will take me a few weeks to get up to the Series finale...then we'll talk.
Bluestocking, anytime you want to talk about LOST I am here.
Empire Boardwalk and Dexter are brilliant.
Where are the people that write these shows on Network..
Sometimes I think kids are doing it.. NO- they would do a better job..:)
It makes you respect how perceptive Mencken was when he said,"There's no underestimating the intelligence of the American public." Rated for perception
My mom is so funny. She watches the alphabet soup channels (ABC, CBS, NBC) and is floored that I do not. When the sitcom laughtrack is finally buried with a peacock quill through its heart, perhaps I'll look in again. Otherwise, cccrrrraaaaaaaaaaaapppp she said.
Turner Classic Movies....almost everything on network TV sucks.
Poetess.. How does one sit there and watch such crap willingly?:)
Linnnn.. I know someone that watches TV like your mother. I wonder if they are hypnotized..:)
OE.. in the summer I watch back ot back movies on the Turner channel.Love them!
