Amish Man Pleads Guilty- Has a "Weiner Moment" with a Minor

Rate: 46 Flag

Anyone that knows me personally knows how much I love the Amish. In a heartbreaking moment this week I read that an Indiana Amish man has been arrested for sending 600 text messages along with lewd images to a 12 year old girl.

If I have understood correctly the Amish have not partaken in the latest of technology for years, let alone know how to text. How could this possibly happen? Was this a steam powered cell phone- or was it left over from an Amish Rumpspringa? When I think of phones for the Amish all I can think of is two cans and a string.

On June 15th Willard Yoder, 26, entered a not guilty plea for four counts of child solicitation after being arrested June 15. Yoder had initially dialed this young girl at random and although the texting was innocent at first he eventually asked her for a “if this buggy is a rockin-don't come a knockin" moment. After many texts Yoder finally told her that he was a 21-year-old Amish man and the young girl's cell phone was immediately relinquished to her mother.

The mother, pretending to be her daughter, repeatedly told Yoder how old her child was. After nonstop phone calls she finally gave the cell to the Indiana State Police. They found at least 600 sent text messages including requests for photos as well as video and photos of Yoder. After a sting was set up he was finally arrested. Yoder said that he had just dialed the random number hoping to have a conversation with someone.

Having visited Intercourse, PA. a few times I was told never to take pictures of the Amish because it is an unacceptable act of pride for them. I have always believed that the Amish were above all ordinary people who simply chose a different way of life.  So someone please enlighten me as to what happened to this man? I have read that many Amish now have a phone in the barn for their businesses and apparently cell phones have now replaced the landlines. But isn’t texting while driving a horse drawn buggy illegal?

I am positive that Yoder will also be punished severely by his own people in addition to whatever the courts rules. Had this crime happened on Amish property Mr. Yoder would have faced a council and been shunned. When you are Amish you never ever break the code of silence and report it to the police. In doing research for this piece there is an article called “Amish Deception” which tells the sad tales of Amish children who are abused by adults. The length of the punishment  for molesting a child is usually excommunication by the church for ninety days and the guilty are never arrested.

amish101

Is it possible that Mr. Yoder thought he might be able to get away with his crime due to lax punishments in the Amish closed community? This is nothing but tragic and is just another example of someone living in a repressed society. As for the young girl I hope she has learned that  sometimes a cell phone can be a dangerous thing. Thank goodness she was not hurt.

I think this Amish man was amiss in his endeavors. You got a sharp eye for digging out these stories...
Was he using Tink's cell phone?
This gives me an opportunity to suggest that readers look up the Yoder (not the same person) Supreme Court case. I believe it's Yoder v. Wisconsin, the case in which the Court ruled that the Amish needn't comply w state mandatory school attendance laws through the 8th grade. I think I have it right--if no, someone pls correct me.

As to this Yoder---Yutz is a more apt name.

Rated.
Repression breeds excess.
Algis: I normally do not write stories like this but this week has been a huge river of craziness in my life and in the news. So this is what I felt like writing. The world is a nutty place.

Neilpaul: Education for girls is grade 8 and I do believe they can start to marry at age 13. I know it is common place now but this really made my eyes pop out for many reasons.

Larry: Tink has a cell??

Jonathan: I read it and he also wrote the article Amish Deception.
Pretty damn sad. I had NO idea.

Zanelle: I always held the Amish sacred. Not anymore.
It must get harder and harder for the Amish to keep their traditions alive every year. Technology is so prevalent and easy for individuals to keep...it's not like televisions or computers that had to be out in the open for all to see.
... I wonder if it is possible to take out a trademark on "Weiner Moment". It is certain to be a popular online term.
At least the mother was able to intervene. There are sick people in every culture. I remember driving through Amish country in PA with my sister--it was so pastoral and beautiful.
rugrat: I know but I was still shocked.. They are just like everyone else now.

Catherine: I imagine if you had bought the name a month ago you must have sold the rights to your go daddy site hahaha
My mother loved the Amish too. So much I was worried she'd convert and drag us all with her. She would have been very saddened by this.

No one is immune to human frailty. Every community has members who have illnesses both physical, mental and spiritual. His use of technology brought it out in the open. If he had not used technology whatever precipitated this act would have inspired another one within his closed community and we wouldn't know about it.
Damn. What is this world coming to when even the Amish can't keep their weiners in check?
Schmoopie: I never ever thought this would happen. I am quite naive.
Mimetalker: You are so right
Unbrakable: Exactly it was like finding out Santa Claus was not real.. Then I started reading all this documentation about former crimes and I was on the floor.
Hmmmmmpf--just goes to show you that no one is immune and that "technology" ain't as grand as we've been led to believe. And yeah, it's like NRA folks say (guns don't kill, people do) but, if I can be just a bit biblical: "lead us not into temptation". And I don't so anyone at Sprint, AT&T or Verizon or Samsung or I-Phone "delivering us from evil".
They're human too. We used to want victims to shut up and suck it up about what's happened so that everyone could go about their business. It's easier to shame the victim into silence than deal with the reality. The cost of shaming and mocking victims threatens to overtake us as more and more perps do as they please.

Attitudes are changing and now even the young feel safe in telling the truth. The girl felt no shame in telling her mom, the mother jumped on it instead of hushing her and now one more perp has been exposed. There was a time a girl like that wasn't free to tell what happened to her. The times they are a changin'.
Although I lived in Ohio for 4 years, and drove through PA many times, I wasn't in touch with the community much. I did, however, meet a pharmacist who was working with the Mennonite community, and she noted that there is a lot of mental illness (due to the amount of drugs she dispensed for schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, etc).
I have to say, I am glad he just confessed and didn't try to get away with it. I am disturbed that it took 600 text messages before anything was said to her parents, although I understand kids are not that responsible either. I suspect he has the same impulses of all 21 year old men, and very little social or cultural guidance. My aunt worked to be the legal guardian of many kids under care of CPS, and she noted that many of the immigrant families did not either recognize rape/molestation as a public (police) issue, but also expected that they should be able to "take care of it" among themselves. Which usually meant nothing happened. This is how it really is in most of the world, sad, but not unusual.
What's with having two creepy old men after young girl stories in two days? ???
Linda, Amish people are people. They have the same problems as we do. In our neighborhood most have phones out in the yard for emergencies and not in the home (?). But I would be curious as a community how much trouble they cause, as I have never noted any in my area anyway. So to me this appears to be rarity, and perhaps a funny on your part, I am unsure.
It the very least he will be shunned from his community. At best, he will be media hounded, verbally bashed and do some jail time, community service and fined for his crimes of the sexually perverted. And then the fun begins! The unlikely victim will be found, media hounded, interviews with the parents, a reality TV show spin off and a book deal. Eee gads. We Americans so preoccupied with the sins of our brethren. News at sex!
Very sad story. It's good the mother intervened when she did. I hope this guy gets the help he needs. I don't think any group of people or community is immune to this kind of thing, sad to say.
Walter: Maybe they should use it as an advertising campaign?
You are so right.

Bleue: They certainly are.

Oryoki. 600 texts and video.. I fear with young kids and cell phones.
I always like to talk about oddities. Sad to say this week the news has been filled with it. Lots of things going on in my life and I guess I need to write and write about other things to assume some normalcy in mine.. if I can.

Rita: When I was doing research for this.. you would be shocked to see what has been hidden in the Amish communities. I always held them high in my eyes and now not so much.

Just Cathy: Those last three words of yours said it all.
Yserba: after reading pages and pages about their communities they need to own up about their crimes.
It's interesting how "our world" occasionally seeps into the Amish world. I have a great respect for their ability to remain true to who they are... with very few exceptions. rated!
Like Rita said, people are people. If anything, abuse happens more in closed societies.
600 texts are nothing for kids these days. That could just be an evening or two conversation of LMAO kind of texts. He is 21, that doesn't make him a man. He is probably as juvenile as she is, or moreso, considering background. We think he should know better, but we have no reason to think he would. At 13, an Amish girl would likely know who she was interested in for marriage down the road, since that is the road everyone is on. He won't get shunned, he will get spiritual counseling and a mental evaluation from the state, which is likely the best course of action. Nobody needs jail time. It just introduces you to more creeps.
Roger : I held them in such high regard. After doing research I was very upset.

Major: I live in a rose coloured glasses world sometimes.
Oryoki: Jail time for someone like that is wrong and I agree with you.
Since I have no cell phone nor know how to text to me it was a lot.:)
Linda, maybe not. I think saying " I like the Amish" is a bit patronizing, I like carriages and cute hats maybe, you see? Or I like Irish people, green leprachauns. Some of my neighbors are nice people, family people, some are strange, some are both. Some are Amish, some are Irish, some Mexican, get my meaning? Not to overthink it or to be disagreeable. I just don't think you can generalize. Some things are scientific facts about the effects of generations of breeding closely like some of the birth defects but other than that I think it is the same as with any other culture or ethnic group, good and bad and in the middle. Just my experience, in my community.
Excellent post and choice of video. It sure sounds like they do indeed have trouble in River City and it is lots more serious than a pool table.
rated with love
Sigh Rita: You are so lucky to live there.. I read some horrible things yesterday and about marrying first cousins etc and you are right I am probably generalizing. Thank you

Romantic Poetess: Just like myself and I wish it wasn't a pool table.:)
So sad on so many levels, Linda. Great job on this story.
So licky my granddaughters see through these predetor type guys, they are young but they have been schooled to watchout for weirdos!!
Too many of these yucks are coming out of the woodwork these days and they are disgusting. There are "kinky" outlets for this kinda stuff and everything imaginable..wish they would stick to their own kind nd leave children alone!!
Sexual sin always seems to tempt the pious, doesn't it. I am not surprised. I have read that the Amish allow their children to leave the community and go completely wild before deciding to live in the community for the rest of their lives. Amazingly about 90 percent return to the fold.
Thanks Ann;; It has been the wacky World Weekly News Linda this week. It seems to be the only thing I can write to make my life normal hahaha

Cindy: Kids with phones.. kids with everything.. it just scares me. I know yours have listened to Grandma Cindy:)

Miguela: I am obsessed with the Amish.. always have been. Everytime I see them I try to talk to them hahah. They say I know more about them than they do. Yes the Rumpspringa and amazingly they all come back. The Amish photographed here was in upstate NY. They are around the Watertown area.
I had not heard of this. I wonder how they can have their social rules supersede the law without someone caving especially if there is a very serious crime like murder committed? Another very interesting post Linda!
Our one consolation can be that this sort of behavior is unusual -- that's why it made the news.
Now this is an oddity. The last thing you would expect an Amish guy to get in trouble for--something technology related. That's it, I'm locking my little girl in the house and putting parental controls on everything until she's 30 :)
Sheila: Because it is a closed community. In Canada our aboriginals have a closed community and most times their law enforcement takes care of it. Of course sometimes it does not.

Geezerchick: exactly..
texting is not allowed, he'd be in trouble just for that alone.
BSB I knew that hahaha
Dianaani: they have to sell those quilts somehow..:) BUt yeah.. huge trouble
Indiana just passed a bill that will take effect July 1, 2011 that outlaws reading and sending text messages while driving. However, it will still be legal to talk on your cell phone or use it to browse or send messages via the Internet.

Abandoned Prayers by Gregg Olsen is a pretty graphic book about a murder involving Amish folk.
Linda, I hate to break it to you, but the Amish have always been just like everyone else. Otherwise why would they need laws regarding molestation? The only reason we don't hear about all the bad things that happen in Amish communities is they are relatively closed to outsiders and they don't discuss their private business. In some cases, where secular laws are broken, I think that is wrong - the perpetrator should be turned over to the proper authorities, not punished as the community sees fit. Ninety days of excommunication for molesting a child? Absolutely unacceptable!
Intercourse Pa is where the Amish live ? Interesting. Yeah, they don't want cameras taking pictures and now he has a mug shot . It doesn't matter what faith you are ,what you do for work.Pedophiles have no boundries, and the Amish can't hide behind those crazy clothes anymore and pretend they are that so different from all the rest of us .We are all humans .We are all accountable as well. I hope he goes to jail.
He was thinking with his little buggy whip.

I hear he referred to his offending member as “Jezeriah”.
I'm not shocked at his being Amish. Anyone can behave this way, and since it is not dealt with appropriately in his community, he probably had no idea of the repercussions he could face in a different society.
Ick. Ick Ick.

"Don't come a-knockin" ...now that would be funny to see that bumper sticker on an Amish buggy : )

On another note, I really wanted to run away to the Amish when I was a kid...clearly not as innocent as I was hoping that world would be.
I'll line up with those who see this as someone busting loose from a repressive upbringing. However, I'm not sure I buy his explanation that this was a random call.
Right here in River City? It starts with T and that rhymes with P and it stands for pervert.
I may be wrong, but it's my understanding that many Amish groups, including the one in Indiana, may be less antagonistic toward technology than the sect in Intercourse, PA.

Even so, modern crime is no stranger to the Amish community.
Some how I can't picture this Amish man in a Verizon store checking out features. I bet he got some second takes!
Can you hear me now???
R
Two tin cans and a string would probably still bring trouble. Sad story, great writing as usual.
No religion or sect is immune from nutcases. In fact, is seems that the more repressive and fundementalist the religion, the higher the number of screwballs. I'm not including the Amish in this - to me that has always seemed more like a way of life than a religion...but agnostic me, what do I know??
I think he should plead Amish. R

I guess this shows that the churn of a young man's testosterone is more than equal to strict Amish discipline. I thought it sad that he dailed a random number seeking to have a conversation with someone. Lots of Amish here, and they hire themselves out for a variety of work, but no phones: you need to dail a non-Amish neighbor who then arranges things.
Where do you find this stuff? -R-

Jerry: I got a comment from an Amish girl on another site. Obviously she is on rumpspringa or who knows? She told me not to lump them all together which I would not and some have phones and some do not.
In upper NY state and your area they do not. I guess it depends where they are. Still very good people.

Trust you to ferret out the offbeat Linda. Just goes to show that human fallibility is no stranger to any community.
The Amish community must be absolutely writhing!
Thanks Marty's H.. congrats on the new grandchild!!
Abrawang: sure shocked the heck out of me.
Chrissie: Obviously there is a lot we do not know about that goes on.
Their culture is more complex than one might think. :-) One man that is Amish with a cell phone gone rogue could get scarey I reckon. Ha ha :-)
Intercourse, PA? There really is a place called that with an Amish community? Oh my ... the bad one-liners could be endless ...
Larry, no way, all of my 'girl friends' are 80 and over!! What? Once you had raisins, you'll never go back to grapes!! Teehee!!

What? :D
And wait, what's wrong with marrying your first cousin?

What? You mean...ooh..."Hey honey, we have to get a divorce or something!! Yeah, I think we'll still be cousins!! Hahaha, who am I kidding, we'll still be brother and sister!!"

Teeheehee!! :D

~wanders off~
Just because he is Amish doesn't exlude him from being a pedophile. Look at the Catholic priests Linda.
And Linda!! What do you mean Santa Claus is not real? That's a damn lie!
Human beings are what they are, Linda, whether they are Amish or Calvinist. I was married to one raised as latter and you'd be surprised to see the pictures he sent - at age 62!
♥R
I'm not Amish--I don't want to run them all down, or pretend they live in a paradise with buggies. But while I don't believe they're exempt from modern laws, I don't believe Amish Pedophiles are above the law. And kids should definitely shun him. Glad he was caught before any more harm came to that girl.
