Indianapolis to Evict the Homeless for the Super Bowl

Rate: 45 Flag

I blog Monday to Friday ON THIS SITE.

My photos can be SEEN HERE

Hot off the press is the news that the Indianapolis police are going to clear their streets of homeless people for the upcoming Super Bowl. Law enforcement has said they are trying to find them shelter but are clueless as where to put these "Urban Campers". I am sure they will not find shelter in the hotels that the incoming sports fans are going to stay in.

Did you know homeless people are now called "Urban Campers"? I had no idea until two weeks ago when Ralph Huerta, 56, had just finished pushing his friend Bruce across the street in his wheelchair. The stretch of Ardenwood Boulevard near Highway 84 in San Leandro, CA. does not have a crosswalk and Huerta was killed in a two vehicle hit and run. ABC news reported that the police described Huerta as an "Urban Camper".

I shook my head in disbelief and decided to check the Urban Dictionary and sure enough it said that an "Urban Camper" was a euphemism for a homeless person. Since when have we become so politically correct about the homeless?  There are even information pages on the web to instruct you on how to urban camp correctly. Does anyone really want to sleep in some alley way if you have a choice?

They suggested in the article you would need the following:

A good sleeping bag and a foam mat to sleep on.

A small tarp can come in handy as a barrier from dirt and as a cover.

A Hammock can help you find comfy, hidden places to sleep in that you wouldn't otherwise be able to.

Does this look like most "Urban Campers" have these things available? The person who slept here is no "rookie".

Socks, socks, socks, and underwear (there's nothing worse then a chaffing underside while hiking the city all day).

Extra jacket, and at least one extra pair of clothes.

Ask this man how many extra socks he has or does he complain about chafing if he "fumbles" at something?

They also say to bring a good Sharpie marker for leaving your mark and making signs.

Do you think this man really wants to make signs on his line of "scrimmage"?

Pack extra food in case something goes wrong or you are delayed. Of course, you don't really have to pack any food at all; you are in the city.

Pack just like as if you were camping in the woods as almost all the same things will apply, save for money and a bus pass.

I don’t think this man has a bus pass nor the money for anything else. He is his own "free agent"!

Bring a musical instrument! Although this isn't a necessity, it will aid in gathering extra cash for your party to share. Try a harmonica, being as they are small and easy to learn. Create your own style!

This man thought he was Franz Lehar's son and yes; he had his own style. This was no ritzy "halftime" show; this was all about surviving.

Sleeping on the streets may make you look homeless. But hey, if done right and with style, can make you look cool too.

This woman isn't feeling well and has no warm bed to crawl into; is that cool too? It's very "off side" to me.

Do not try this as a method of transportation for a business trip, unless you are a professional stunt man, actor, activist, musician, artist, busker, juggler, buccaneer, gypsy... oh heck, you know who you are.

This is his only means of transportation and he is on the business trip of life trying to survive. He is a "man-in-motion".

Urban Camping is illegal and remember to be a lone wolf when you go to sleep!

This is his only place to sleep and he sleeps in the daytime because after dark is just too dangerous to have his eyes closed as he might get "tackled".

So just like Red China did before the Olympics Indianapolis will now clear their "Urban Campers" out to parts unknown. How thoughtful that the United States of America now has that new indefinite detention law to make some things easier. Will some of our "Urban Campers" disappear just because of the Super Bowl?  Is a football game more important than the homeless who are real people that live on the streets? For shame Indianapolis; may you never become poor and have no home. I hear that Urban Camping even done with style is no "touchdown"!

A total outrage.Meanwhile millions of foreclosed homes sit vacant.
Very poignant photos.
I love your take on the homeless. You are so nonjudgmental and it is refreshing. I think you are brave too!!
I posted this on another site but got so MAD when I saw no one really cared on Huffington post. Man these are people just like us. So I got so mad I posted hahaha
Zanelle.. when people were making fun of the story I had enough.
If no one reads it fine but I have done my very best to get it out. Its a travesty!
Outrageous, but I'm not surprised. I feel like throwing up. "Urban campers," as if they are on vacation. Gag me! Thanks for posting this and for the great photos. Rated.
Do you think that Indianapolis would offer them part time jobs while the Stupid Bowl is in town?

No, me neither.

The poverty in America is exploding while CEO pay and bonuses continue to escalate at alarming rates. The pie is only so big and when you give more pie to one group, another group is sure to suffer. Many who work still qualify for food stamps. This is a subsidy to the big box stores and Walmart.

We should be ashamed, but fully half of our country believes the homeless are getting exactly what they deserve.

$660 billion for the military this year while the country collapses around us. Shame on us.
"Urban Campers" indeed. Why are we so heartless? ~r
Erica.. when the ABC anchor on the local bay area news said "Urban Campers" he looked strange and I said,

"What did he just say??"
I was appalled.
Michael,

"We should be ashamed, but fully half of our country believes the homeless are getting exactly what they deserve."
Do you know how many 'believers' told me that? I am shocked.. Those that profess that we a re all going to hell should take a good look at themselves.
so - we should be angry that the municipal government is trying to get the homeless off the streets and into shelters, where its warm and there's food?

um - shouldn't we be outraged that this is only a superbowl policy, and isn't in effect 365 days a year, instead?
Joan H.. there are so many heartless people and I am sure you are in contact with some every darn day.
Baltimore.. I so agree, but this slapped me in the face.
Oh Linda - Tut Tut Tut.

" Put the autoBOTS down Fred(tm)......."
Creekend.. are you following me round this am?:) hahaha Everywhere I go you are two steps behind me love hahah
Steve S.. I already have a couple of friends with no place to live.. I do worry..:) Say are you and Creekend following me around today? I feel so warm and loved hahaha
I'm guessing "Urban Campers" is a way to soften it for people so they don't have to think of homelessness. So many people want to do what they'll do in Indianapolis, sweep them away, far out of sight. Thanks for being angered by this and writing about it.
Indy isn't the first town to do this and they won't be the last. If you want a solution, hit up the NFL. I did hear that they were fronting some of the money for the relocation.
disgraceful thanks for this, Linda r.
Linda,
FRed(tm) and I are celebrating being able to get 'on' to OS and yes Steve n I are probably stalking you. Orf now to buy a cabbage.
Wow, urban campers...what's next, the cancer cross-country? The term is almost as gross to me as the removal of the homeless for the superbowl. You are so right to focus on that term; it implies homelessness is a choice, a thrilling adventure to embark on in life, some new trendy extreme sport. Great article and photos Linda. Rated!
I'm hanging around between stirring the next recipe blog entry - Curry for Dummies.
This is disgusting. I can't believe we label street people.
FWIW, they're doing the same thing in Rio to its street people for the upcoming Summer 2016 olympic events.
Urban Camper my ass!
I forgot to add:

http://youtu.be/l6MFN8yiVc0
Well said, Linda. It's so disturbing that football takes precedence over people.
Another reason for me to hate football. What a disgrace!
And the city subsidized the building of the new stadium which really IMHO wasn't necessary but they needed more luxury suites. I know it is more complicated than an either/or but YIKES.
The City of Atlanta did the same thing when we had the 1996 Olympics and the 2000 Super Bowl. Homelessness is one of those inconvenient truths Al Gore was talking about. "There but for the grace of God go I."

Lezlie
Kevin: I blew up and posted it on my home blog page and then when I saw people making jokes on it online I got so mad I pushed Publish.. People need to know what's going on for the love of football and Tostitos.

Phyllis.. I have NO doubt about that at all.

Jon: I thought it was quite indignant..

Creekend.. Steve has the corned beef so it will be a loverly compliment..:)

Sarah: Thanks so much for reading!
Another Steve: Please see Creekends comment
Sometimes I wonder just how close many of us are to taking on a new lifestyle of "urban camper". And those helpful hints forgot to mention how to keep your 4g phone or i-pad charged or how to operate your DVR while urban camping. Dang.
Belinda; shocked the heck out of me and it all just sucks
Scanner: I do agree

Triology It seems EVERYTHING takes precedence these days over people.

Miguela: You betcha

Bea: I live with a sports fan. He would give up the finances of what a couple of games would cost to feed people. I cannot believe that stadium item.

Sheila; so well said
Walter.. I saw no mention of that.. just to bring a harmonica..:)
Brilliantly clever and heart wrenching, Linda. Sobering, too.
Love you Chicken Maan.. thank you
I prefer to call myself an "Urbane Camper".
John.. Are you doing a mini series with that name?
Man I would kill to see that..:)
shame on those who created the sadness you write of. your photos speak volumes.
Chuck: It is a running commentary between me and Kevin Army that one day I will have a cable show featuring the homeless that I meet. I talk to them every day and I take pictures only if they agree and I do donate each time. I have met some of the nicest people. Tony (Caveman) not featured here is my fave.
Hey everybody, lets go URBAN CAMPING!! EWWWW!! Lets not!! :D

RATED!!!
Another touching post and photo essay. This is the saddest state of affairs I have ever witness in this rich land.
Excellent reminder
rated with love
Mary it is sad.
TINK.. everytime I see that avatar I think you have dreads.:)
The good book says that "the poor will always be with us" but I feel so sad when I see people living like this, especially in a country that can afford to do better for its citizens. We are faced with the same problem in T&T I'm ashamed to say.
Linda, maybe you should start a campaign -- build homes instead of drones! The profits from the football game could start things rolling. :)
Geez, I guess I'm out of touch. When I stay in a hotel I call it urban camping! Let's see: a football game with millions of $$ to be made through advertising or removing human beings like they are so much rubbish??

To someone it's an easy choice. Someone who is warm, cozy and comfortable in their mansion.
Good piece backed up and fleshed out with great photographs. Well done.
Wow - wouldn't be totally surprised if they hadn't gotten the idea from London - who are doing the exact same thing to their homeless in preparation for the Olympics. Mayor Boris Johnson has made it his calling card to shut the soup kitchens and have rough sleepers rounded up and shuttled off to the outskirts of the city.
I can't even beleive that. Urban camper? This has got to be a joke. On the news, someone killing the homeless. whatta world. What an outrage but as the wise scanner once said: I'm mad as hell and I'm ... taking it up the ass.

Glad there are people like you to counteract those cold blooded snakes in Indianapolis.

I am convinced that "urban camper" is a joke. No way that someone can ever say that with a straight face. OMG.
Here's an article

http://www.theindychannel.com/news/30099658/detail.html

Scroll down and read the comment by CHIP, then click on more info from CHIP and read the rest of what they say. His last sentence?

"However, for the homeless in Indianapolis, increased police presence means increased opportunities for access to social services and assistance. It is only natural to be skeptical and to be vigilant, especially as game day draws nearer and pressure comes from some to sweep the streets; to hide the homeless. After all, other cities have done just that. Two years ago the host committee and the city made a commitment to follow a different course."

They say they are taking this opportunity to help them, according to the home town news. Will the help carry on after the game? I don't know. But what ever happened to the benefit of the doubt?
How American of them, I wouldn't expect anything else. Happy New Year, Linda, you are one fine human being. R
A walrond: There is a problem everywhere. yes, there is little money but there could be solutions if they tried. NO one cares to try.

Scarlett: something stinks about all of this does it not?

Jeff.. Thank you kind sir

Ndrezteacher: There is absolutely something morally wrong with all of this.

Fernsy: You and me both. When I heard the ABC news announcer say it I asked Steve if I heard right. Then I went to Google and was floored.

Phyllis: short term solutions are not long term ones. Thank you so much for posting this link

Thoth: Just another day in America.
You can only hope that it opens some eyes and pockets in Indianapolis and that they come up with some food and shelter solutions that last longer than Super Bowl weekend.
Linda, this is so gritty and real it makes me uneasy in my seat. As well it should. Bless those people. Curse that euphemism and the Superbowl. Excellent post. The photos are haunting. R
Jls.. lets hope
Michelle: It seems when you are homeless you have no choices.. but now even more
I love those purely cosmetic "solutions"--just get them out of sight so we don't have to be reminded of their existence. The very existence of a large permanent population of homeless people in the US is new, within my lifetime. Such a population 40 or 50 years ago existed only in Thrid World countries. A telling sign of the direction we are headed. Thank you, Linda. [r]
This must be especially tough on the Polian family now.
Donegal... some people walk by them every day like they dont exist. I am here to tell them they do exist and maybe one was an old teacher of yours or someone just needs a smile.
Do you know how many doctors that had someone die under them are out in the street? They just did not know how to face life after that.

OE- I do believe he just got fired..I wonder if he will be in the street some day
Sadly this seems to be standard for any city hosting anything substantial. Gotta make that city "family friendly" and squeakly clean for the clueless.
Mr. Coffee is from Indianapolis and my father-in-law still resides there. I will pass this story on to them. Excellent photographs! I love the "man-in-motion" set up.
Various.. just like Ottawa.. things are pretty standard everywhere
Bluestocking.. I know it seems to be done everywhere but its insane.
I think Jimmy Carter said it best. What homeless people need is homes.
there you go lois.. well said
Another great commentary on those often overlooked by the majority of us. Your photos are riveting.
schmoopppppppppppie..:)
These photographs are living people.. They need respect
This is unbelievable....here is something from a facebook friend: "yeah, most of my clients are losing homes and can't understand why the banks would rather they sit empty instead of rent them out; yet, on the flip side, a few lucky people in ridiculously depressed areas like Gary and Calumet City are being allowed to stay in homes post-foreclosure rent-free as long as they cover tax and insurance.his is unbelievable...." "My mantra is that home ownership should be equal to or cheaper than renting, absent some overriding concern that renting cannot address" All in response to the Ben Bernanke Huffington Post Article.
Sheila.. that is insane.. I am going to go read that article. But you are right.. they would rather leave it empty than help someone.
see my photo tomorrow I am going to quote you.
No touchdown, indeed. A thoughtful, provocative piece of photojournalism. I had not heard the term urban camper. Ridiculous term. R
Since when have we become so politically correct about the homeless?

ah linda. we label. then we ...pigeonhole...then
we can survive the raw reality.

embrace yer label.

expand it into a way of be-ing....

urban camper.

suburban dreamer.

urbane educator.

eccentric urbane sophisticated heart of gold, u...
james..
suburban dreamer -that is what we both might be but hell we know the difference from right and wrong.
