The Keystone XL Pipeline- A Tale of Two Countries

Rate: 34 Flag

I believe in creating different energy sources so my family supports Canada by investing in Alberta tar sands. Most environmentalists would scold them for supporting  such a dirty energy but I know quite a few of my son's friends that have left Ontario to work in the tar sands of Alberta. So, we support Canadian jobs and the future of alternative energy. Today the U.S. State Department announced a decision to deny TransCanada's current application for a proposed Keystone XL pipeline.

My American friends were thrilled with the decision and after spending a lot of time researching media outlets such as Huffington Post etc. so was the rest of the US population. On the other side of the border on Canadian sites such as CBC and Yahoo Canada 90% were mocking the United States decision, and of course some were thrilled that Prime Minister Harper did not get his way.

"Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said after a speech in Toronto that the Canadian government strongly backs Keystone XL, but wouldn't go further until an official announcement from the U.S.

"It’s a challenging political hot potato south of the border, but obviously we were very disappointed with the decision in December [to delay approval]," Baird said."

Our two countries are similar in thoughts but when it comes down to the nitty gritty we both stand steadfast for what we believe in. So after reading all the comments I decided to do a parody with them and below we have two friends Sam, the American and Stephen, the Canadian discussing the pipeline decision.

Sam: "So I heard your pipeline got shot down Steve. That pipeline goes over a major source of fresh water for several different states. And from all of the photos I've seen, it's right out there in the open; not underground where it would be moderately safe. You might as well paint a great big target on it and say "Terrorists, please attack this."

Steve: "Sam, Canadian petroleum should be refined in Canada to produce employment solely for our country. We need jobs here, not Texas. As a Canadian, I agree Obama made an excellent decision. We will build a Canadian pipeline to a Canadian port, so its all over for the Greens in the U.S.A. and Robert Redford can stick his head up his butt! My hope is that we ship 100% of our oil through that pipeline or maybe build 2 or 3. We will have the oil, money and the will!

Sam: "You know Steve, the tar sands pipelines are already leaking in America. The first Keystone pipeline is only one year old, and has already leaked 14 times. Migrating ducks have been poisoned by tar sands oil that has permeated waterways. Whooping cranes, an extremely endangered species, migrate along the proposed route of the new Keystone pipeline. Oil and water don't mix. If we continue deep water offshore drilling in the Gulf and construct transcontinental oil pipelines, we will destroy fragile wildlife and the economic activities that rely on healthy ecosystem."

Steve:  "Sam, it was still an idiotic move! A commodity the U.S normally goes to war over, but this pipeline apparently has seemed to cross some line? We'd rather sell our oil to you, but I guess we'll just have to refine our oil here and sell it to China!  I hope to dear God that this will be a watershed moment for Canada to finally move away from crumbling America and chart out its own economic course."

Sam:  "Don't you get it Stephen? The estimate of created jobs is inflated, and unsubstantiated. Whatever jobs will dry up after installation therefore leaving only a handful of jobs left to monitor the line. What will be left is a very real terrorist target, very real pollution of ground water vital to 1.5 million people, and farmland jeopardized. What are we gonna do Stephen, we really don't have any ideas about future energy sources!"

Stephen: "Let’s imagine we care about jobs and support the pipeline and then pretend we care about unions too."

Sam: "They'll never go for it."

Stephen: "They voted for Bush."

Sam: "Good point!"

Stephen:  "Good for Obama, gutsy and unafraid of making an error in decision. Now let's keep the oil in Canada process it here and then sell the finished product. More jobs for all sectors of Canadian workers and we have all the benefits of our oil.

First of all the media gives the impression this is a all-or-nothing issue, which is untrue. Canada already has a pipeline to the Gulf, this would just be another, bigger pipeline. This pipeline is for Amercian Oil Companies to ship crude oil to their refineries, with little benefit to Canada other than a small royalty fee paid to Alberta.  Maybe it is time to let the Americans freeze in the dark, as Albertans once said to eastern Canada."

Sam: "Yup, those evil Canadians will tear, shred, and mutilate this beautiful world no matter what we well-meaning Americans decide!"

(laughter)

Sam: "Honestly Stephen, tar sand oil is the dirtiest fuel produced in the world. The Canadians are planning on generating 400 million gallons of highly contaminated water and sludge each day in order to get it out of the ground. The pipeline carrying the tar sand oil through the US would cross six states with many major rivers and aquifers. There is a history of large leaks and breaks with this acidic, dirty oil. If the Canadians want to sell this crap, they should build their own pipeline."

Stephen: "My wife has a big map of all of the pipelines in North America hanging behind her desk. There is already a keystone pipeline coming down from Canada along with 4 others. There is no reason that this pipeline has to take a different route than all of the others. Just run it along the same path as the others and there is no problem."

Sam: "Did you know that Rail transport is set to make a killing by picking up the slack of the "stalled” XL pipeline.  Over 20,000 new crude oil tanker cars have already been ordered to beef up volumes heading south and west. The added benefit is that the bitumen will not have to be diluted in order to ship it this way, and other successful Canadian railroad companies like CN and CP will profit. Those vehemently opposed to the pipeline have no idea that the safest way to transport crude, a pipeline, will now be supplemented by a less safe method."

Stephen:  "We have many thousands of US citizens working in our Alberta oil patches. More Americans than there are Albertans working in there.  On the other hand they show up as employed in the Canadian stats making our Prime Minister Harper (a Redford look alike) look like a winner to the public. Honestly we could load up a fleet of buses and move all these people back into the US and see if their attitudes change."

Sam:  "We can't seem to control Canada anymore than we should have been able to control the Sioux."

Stephen: "Ahh Sam, let's bring the buffalo back and then we can all walk and talk as we burn buffalo dung for heat in the winter."

(laughter)

Sam: "I will ask you one thing Stephen and maybe you know the answer! How in the hell did the Hoover Dam ever get built?"

                                 The  End

"CANADA SEEKS ALTERNATIVE ROUTE FOR KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE"

"On Tuesday, an independent federal panel in Canada will begin its review of a proposed western pipeline that would carry the oil from Alberta to the coast of British Columbia. From British Columbia, the oil would be shipped on tankers to oil-hungry China."

Indeed!
One thing I am is honest and not going to sugar coat over the truth. They support the tar sands and that is that. I thought it would be interesting to show both sides.
Sam's my man...The risk is too great. So if Canada refines this filthy sludge there, why not SHIP it to the refineries here? After all, shipping it to China would cost more and the gunk wouldn't need a pipeline and run the risk of polluting the water and land that living things depend on.
This was a superb blog, Linda. Both sides presented with passion. The issue comes down to risk. And it isn't worth it.
marsha, you and I are very passionate and after talking to you I needd to write this.
It goes on the Canadian side tomorrow hahaha
Fascinating, Linda!
You and me don't agree on the pipeline, but you did a great job seeing both sides and making me think about the issue. And Sam's last line is awesome.
Guys I had NO intention of blogging on here today. NO intention but my feathers got ruffled and I HAD to write.. JUST had too hahaha
But Marsha was happy that I presented both sides so that's great.
Now I feel better and may resume my daily activities hahaha
Thank you!
Whether or not there are legitimate environmental concerns in Nebraska, this became part of the "Great American Political Pissing Contest" between specifically John Boehner and Barak Obama--between the Legislative Branch and the Executive Branch. In this never political manhood measuring contest waged at the porcelain governmental urinal, the loser will ultimately be the consumer/taxpayer. And there will be no winner. Unless, of course, it's Canada by telling the U.S. where they can stick the pipeline and building it to its own terminus.
Thanks Linda.
I agree wiht Blevins onthis one.

The actual U.S. decision had nothing to do with relative merits/problems about this project.

The Boner made his previous threat about the pipeline by making the time limit a condition of allowing the Federal Governement to make timely payments on debt late last year. For once the Prez's posse called the bluff. The Boner and his posse will have some explaining to do to their Oil Company paymasters. I would like to be a fly on the wall and hear that conversation.
Walter: I did not do this blog for a lot of readers- as I expect it is not something that interests some people. I guess I was shocked at how the two countries discussed it. One was Pro, the other NOT.
It was a pissing contest indeed and I was floored
The whole rail thing was like Holy cow.. here we come and yeah Canada said' see ya around; hahaha
Steve- Boner has said its not over and I kind of agree. I think right now it's an election thing and it shall rise again.:)
Well Linda, you do political commentary very well indeed using your own unique gifts to get a point across. American politics is ever amazing and ever appalling. We are devolving.
Walter: this started out as a family issue but I had to write it so there was no divorce hahaha
Its a good thing you dont live with me hahah
Linda I really appreciate your showing both sides. r.
I find it all sad. Build a pipeline, that could pollute some beautiful country, or do underground FRACKING that is doing untold damage to the earths core. The water is being infested with poisons and it is literally causing EARTHQUAKES in Ohio. Six of one...,
Jon: I may be very opinionated but I do try and give both sides their time no matter which one I am on.:)
Scanner: living with a Sierra Club employee I do agree with you about the fracking.:)
You are always teaching me things I am not otherwise aware of happening. Thanks for this lesson.
rated with love
RP I read a lot of news on both sides and I have way too many opinions..:)
woW

tHAt aVARTar piC hAS u loOKiNg wHItER thAn mIKEaL jaCKsoN iN hiS lATeR yEaRS
you teach me something new every day with your posts and pictures.
thanks Jonnie: I am really proud of my white glo in the dark complexion.

Michelle- In Canada no one really cares except the heads to be. Here it is another matter.
You and I do sometimes differ on issues- I think mainly the role of government in such things as health care, not on desired goal, but rather on proper method. - But i believe You and I and Steve and the t-party totally agree on this one. Very good post.
There never would have been a divorce. ;-) And as others have said, nice job telling both sides. My feelings are that Canada should be exploring greener energy alternatives rather than exploiting the land for more dirty fuel, but I do get the jobs issue, among other reasons why Canada is pursuing this. Here in the U.S., we can talk all we want about green jobs but I don't think coal miners in West Virginia will be getting jobs in solar panel plants because those plants won't be going to West Virginia. There's definitely a lot to think about on both sides. And yes, in the end it really was just politics as Walter and another steve pointed out. If Boehner doesn't make the play he did, this could have turned out very differently.
Token, I grew up living with free health care and know no other way. I see friends being laid off losing their health care at 62 and cringe how awful life can be for them. It bothers me that people can be refused a medical procedure by insurance companies.
Most Canadians feel the same way I do about medical issues below the border. But you knew that.:)

I just wanted to present both sides on this matter as there are two sides to every story. Thanks for commenting!
Steve: Canada has also broken out of the Kyoto agreement too. So no idea which way they are going eco wise. I wish someone would help W VA before mining kills them all.
We're all oil junkies and we all know how it goes with addiction. Sigh. Ah well if we're all going down together in the end, at least we have another post by you. It would be cruel if you didn't keep posting here, no one can replace anyone else. Please... I miss seeing you here so very much.
Thanks Sheila!!! It was a lot of work..:) but I loved doing it.
Bleue.. you are so sweet. thank you
I miss you here on OS too! Great passionate post. More More. I needed to read this and it helped me sort it all out. Thanks
The idea that Canada will just build a pipeline to the coast and ship it to China is meeting lots of resistance. The Enbridge Pipeline is being protested by native and environmental groups along the proposed route so it will be no easier for them to get that through than it is Keystone.

The tars sands must be stopped! They create 82% more carbon emissions than conventional oil. They waste and pollute the water, poison the air and destroy boreal forests. As James Hansen the leading climatologist says, if the tar sands and Keystone project go through, it's game over for the planet due to global warming and increased fossil fuel emissions.

Why not spend the money earmarked for these projects on a new energy grid, alternative energy, conservation and efficiency?

As far as jobs that are created by the tar sands, fuck em. I don't want jobs that kill the planet and ruin the future for my kid. The Nazi's who ran the ovens probably said, "Yeah, I know burning jews is wrong , but I gotta make a living."
Nice depiction Linda. It's seldom enough that a big decision is made in favor of the environment. Those who don't give a damn about it will always trot out the jobs issue. To them it trumps planetary welfare ten times out of ten. And as often as not the "jobs" defense is what they say when they really mean "profits".
An interesting read and you do political punditry quite well thank you.
Zanelle: I was confused too until I started researching things.:)

Alaskan: Yes, I read that the aboriginals are going to put up some resistance, but in the end money talks.
Saskatchewan is now getting into the tar sands business as they saw how well Alberta did and as I said Canada has dropped out of Kyoto. What a world we live in.
Well done. Brava!!!!
Stephen: "My wife has a big map of all of the pipelines in North America hanging behind her desk." I guess you could call it an oil painting.

Sorry for the lame joke. This was hilarious.
Abrawang... It was the TV show Dallas that first alerted a young 'moi' that oil=$$$. It is always about profit and screw everyone else. They will bring this back... just wait, it's way too much money.

Migeula: As some in my close knit group have told me." I have a mouth on me"..:)
Thanks Blu Feather

Margaret: I swear if I brought you to a local Canadian Tim Horton's you would have enough fodder for blogs for a year. :) We Canadians are quite humourous at times.:)
Thank you for posting this, Linda, you make a strong point, I am with you. R
Wow, well done. "A commodity the U.S normally goes to war over" great point
XO Hayley
I am piping down on this one but the truth has been spread out oh so evenly here. Good for you.

Interesting post. "Beware the tar monster Scooby."

They're good revenue producers for governments through taxes and to a certain point generate employment, just NIMBY (trans: not in my back yard). Find a desolate spot and slime away....
Superficially I side with the POTUS and would ultimately conjecture a mOnOrail stradled over over it--probably triples the costs and the work load.
However, the man I voted for has taken a cautious approach and appreciates putting people first. A recently retired air controller and alas dearly departed fishing buddy of mine (knew every engineer and so forth) knew two things about this country, 1) mess or horse around with his wife, family, friends, country-consider yourself a dead motherflicker. 2) & vote.

Also, it should be no secret that this is the fourth year of a Presidential cycle and Congress has done nothing other than obstruct with the obstinate recklessness of self-preservation.
The ill-advised obstructionist 'goal' is hurtful, shameful and frankly not American. Clearly anti-humanist.

As an example Governor Walker of WI got off on the foot as he and his propagandists refused funding for so-called high speed rail at the expense of (minimally) 5,000 life, family sustaining jobs; the WI GOP with its infusion of 'outside' coin literally dropped an anvil on its foot with that one.

My all too brief conclusion at the moment is that such a pipeline might be a precursor for leeching the Great Lakes.

I just don't know, LS, but this food for thought of your hard work is
important and appreciated.

Jim
Thoth: As I said before, it's all about damn money and power

Hayley: ain;t it the truth? We do not like something? We go to war.

Creekend: employment would be so temporary

JP: They block everything (GOP) and expect for the country to proceed. Then the GOP bring in their proposals and expect it to go through. Nothing but children playing a selfish game at the expense of the people. I never even thought about the Great Lakes. Excellent point!
I just had to do this.. JUST had too. Because you know what? It is going to come back again.
You know Linda, I actually knew very little about the details of this whole business. The talking heads are saying that Obama's decision on the pipeline was politically motivated, but I can't judge until I know what the heck it's all about. I'd been planning to read up on it at some point and now you've inspired me to do so. Thanks for an entertaining and edifying read.
Bluestocking.. I dont normally do things like this but I just had too.:)
HUGGGGGGGGGG
Interesting presentation, Linda. The United States of America has exported more petroleum/crude oil than any other comparable nations and yet American consumers are gouged at the gas pumps and it's been predicted that we will be paying upwards of $5.00 per gallon Spring 2012.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/03/us-becomes-net-exporter-o_n_857085.html
Belinda: It just does not make sense does it. I am going to read that article now.
Thank you for writing this, Linda. I admit to being ignorant of the pipeline. You did an excellent job of presenting two sides of the issue. I kept thinking about the fracking industry while reading this. How we are destroying our beautiful country. Such a shame.
A few more interesting stories here, if you've the time to read. I won't hijack your thread, Linda. You've done an excellent service, once again, of playing devil's advocate in presenting both sides' perspectives, and with a touch of your unique style and sense. Thanks.

ahhh Kin ya sweet thang.
I read this yesterday and now have time to comment.
I so appreciate this, Linda, you, Sam and Stephen have made this quite clear now. What kept ringing in my mind all night is this: We're willing to go to war over mid-east oil, supposedly, but won't accept local peacefully offered oil from our allied neighbors???
The environmental risks can be dealt with, dead soldiers and civilians are a harder fix for sure...
The environmental risks can be dealt with, dead soldiers and civilians are a harder fix for sure...
That said it all for me Just Thinking..
Good comment.
HUGGGGGGGGGGGG
This balanced look at this issue is excellent, Linda. One thing that isn't discussed in Sam and Stephen's (love the name!) conversation is something Kosher Salaami told me; i.e., none of the oil extracted from anywhere belongs to the country in which it was either extracted or refined. It is all auctioned to the highest bidder. That was surprising news to me and makes the threat of sending it to China or anybody else a moot point.

Lezlie
Lezlie: China will probably be the highest bidder.. It is amazing isn;t it?
Nicely written. Witty. Although I have to say, most I have talked to up here didn't seem upset about it.
Various.. most of the canadian comments did not give a rats ass that it might not work .. they wanted to keep it all for themselves..:)
Linda- thanks for getting me caught up on this current event. I didn't make it to the story earlier, but I'm glad I caught it. What a day!
I'm not just against the pipeline. I am against the dumb Canadians who actually think this is somehow good for them. The fact that it will destroy miles and miles of environmentally sensitive lands in their own country behooves me! Ok, if you want to destroy your own country, that's your business. Sell it to China if that's the case. At least we won't have to worry about it destroying our too! But the Canadians will be the real losers. We may have voted for Bush, but obviously the Canadians aren't much smarter!
