Crafting with Cats- No, really- Crafts Made from Cats!

Rate: 35 Flag
Right up there with knitting a stove using steel wool comes this tidbit from the land of Hello Kitty. Kaori Tsutaya is a Japanese writer obsessed with cats. Tsutaya exhibits her crafty results and also runs little kitty craft workshops to inspire other cat owners. As cats seem to work better as paper weights or roving tripping hazards I became pretty interested in this article.

Not just another craft book Tsutaya gives you plenty of pictures of her cats, humour, and tips on caring for your feline, from proper brushing techniques to "fleas r us".

This book actually tells you how to clip your cat at certain times of the year to get the best fur for crafts and I must remind you it's a big no-no to shave your  house cat. I’ve also heard that announcing that you’ve shaved your 'cat' in public will actually make you quite popular in certain male circles so beware of what you share on Facebook.

There are two basic techniques for making miniature cats in her book "Crafting With Cat Hair". Tsutaya shows us how to make felt with the hair, beginning with the methods of how you brush it from the cat. Apparently by wrapping layers and then shaping the material with soap and wetting it will give you a solid piece of cat hair fabric to work with.

Actually I am more interested in seat covers for my car in a lovely zebra pattern and I wonder how many black and white cats it would take to complete that project.

The other technique she mentions involves needle felting with cat hair, and making tiny little creatures for a  possible cover for your new Cranky Cuss book or Kindle. Would you like the abbreviated version? Set a book on a table in front of you and try and read that book. Watch as your cat tries to sit on it and covers it in hair. Presto chango, instant book cover!

Kitty bloggers around the country saved plastic bags of their cat’s hair just for the book’s release last year, and say the book is like catnip for them. I just don’t understand it myself, as I am afraid cats might eat the completed craft and then deliver the deconstructed version right where you might step on it in the middle of the night.

According to Huffington Post words from the wise think it's all fun and games.

“I think it’s interesting because it’s something quirky and different,” says Stephanie Harwin, 29, who writes the cat blog Catsparella, (all cats, all the time.) “It’s a kind of way to keep your cat around when they are not. Looking to the future that is. People have cat hair everywhere and it’s something to do with it.”

Harwin says she herself tackled a pet project from the book — she made a finger puppet out of her cat Priscilla’s hair. “Yes, it’s kind of weird and different and quirky,” she says. “It's a little controversial, some people think it’s kind of gross. But to me, how is this different from using wool?”

Let me explain this to you very carefully Ms. Harwin. Cats always seem to munch on wayward hair that turns into food which usually gives the end result of poop.  So, most certainly cat-owners always have the raw materials to give this "a go" before expulsion, and yes it's darn controversial!

Honestly, why don't all of  you crazy crafters just throw the cat hair in the yard and watch the birds make a nest if you are so desperate for creation.

My final word on this 'purring' subject is this:

This is just another perfect example of: "Just because we can, does not mean we should."

If I roll up my cat's hair in a ball she'll attack it ferociously so there's no need for me to waste time making her a toy from it. I prefer to use my spare time to remove calluses and unsightly dead skin from my feet. Perhaps I should write about that.
I actually checked this book out of my library because I didn't believe such an animal existed. It was way too creepy to be cute, IMO. I've reached pretty much the same conclusion that you did, Linda. Cat Felt making is NOT in my future!

Linda, that's a type of clever crafty craft!

I was down at my local contemporary art museum in nearby CT yesterday and saw amazing animal figures that had been made from trash by S.F. artist, Kathryn Spence:

"Just because we can, does not mean we should." AMEN! I don't think we'll see Mrs. Muse knitting with cat fur any time soon. As you know, she's one hellacious knitter. She's a DOG person, not a cat person. But I don't think she'll be using dog hair, either. (Though we certainly have enough of it, specially come spring!)
Sorry, I kind of like the cat finger puppets, though it sounds like too much work to make "cat felt". But we all need a hobby!
you folks DO these things? i am speechless (aside from the lol-ing) r.
Actually they are cute and if you adore your cats....well....
Bleue: Id read it hahaha
Shiral: I have death defying allergies from cats.. not me.
Designantor.. WOW.. you are the man that brings cool hahaha

Muse: There is actually a book for dog hair hahaha I will send you the link
JMac.. NOT me!!
Kevin: dont you and I have enough hobbies?
Jon.. Not me!!
Matt: could you not hear me sneeze?
Sheila.. you can have it sheila hahah
Darn, I don't have a cat! But I'm always looking for ways to jump on someone else's bandwagon and I think I've come up with a great idea of my own: "Penny-pinching With Pubes: How To Save Big Bucks By Substituting Pubic Hair For Meat in Your Favorite Recipes."
Schmoopie.. read MS Feikes comment for Yeuuh

Margaret: hasn't someone already come up with that??? HMMMM where did I see that?
I write a lot of weird news these days Margaret on another network and I have found your man..:)

I can donate "Locks of My Kitty" for a small fee. She sheds plenty for all.
Lea.. I think we should start the nation on Locks for Kitty.:)
It's almost molting time for my husky, who will produce bags and bags of nice fur...that's a little more like it for making stuff. I've sometimes thought of stuffing pillow - nothing more ambitious.
Myriad.. that baby of yours is a beauty. I thought he was gorgeous.
Made me laugh.

If this really takes off, I see another source of revenue for my rescue . We can set up a dipping and shearing queue at the facility, just like in "The Thornbirds".
Getting a lot of links from Enemy of the state, Linda Give him/her my regards. Liked this a lot . hope that it does inspire a post from Doris about her feet.
Another Steve.. You make me laugh almost every single day.. this one was a doozy.
Thanks
Oh ew...uh, me-ow? Anyway, all I have to do is call my sister for All Cats All the Time. Great post on a subject that makes me hiss.
I knew someone who had a sweater crafted from yarn spun from Sheltie hair. Very soft and really warm. Just labor intensive.
fernsy.. I write about a lot of stuff every single day. average 4-5 blogs a day.. E sends me links from time to time and is a very good friend.. I have used two this week..:) I think Doris should do it. I would love to see it hahah
I agree Vivian
I'm sorry, but this is just too weird for words. Although that last picture makes all seem so damn cute...
This is artistic, beautiful and creepy at the same time! You are the master of the hugely interesting! Hugs and R
Sounds like too much work.
Just skin the damn thing.
(there are many ways, ya know)
Well darn it anyway, and I thought I'd come up with the "next big thing." A turkey egg and cheese bagel does sound kind of good though, with or without pubic hair. Picky cop.
Well, it's not as gross as the spinning wool from your cat's hair, knitting a purse or slippers out of it, and then felt crafting a pillow. Which I have seen, oh, yikes. I consume enough stray cat hair on a daily basis by accident, not sure why I would want to make finger puppets out of it .

"While surfing the internet mom stumbled across this artist.Mom is always fascinated with unusual art.
Her name is Rachel Betty Case and her art is made with human finger nail and toe nail clippings.
She also has used belly button lint.Art comes in all forms and her's is truly unique."
HA! Super fun post. I don't like my cat quite enough to shave her and knit with her hair...but I have a friend who might.
Phyliss I cannot even imagine.. the work indeed.
Rugrat.. weird indeed.
zuma.. I love doing this stuff.
larry I was waiting for your comment and I have seen that woman on the show Oddities on the History Channel..:) Glad everyone can see her now.
Margaret: LOL picky he was..
Oryoki: I can;t figure out the finger puppets either hahha
Maureen.. When I saw this I could not figure out who would do it either haha
I love crafts like this that really are more ART than craft. Fun.
Please don't use critter hair to make a cover for my book! It's not necessary - my picture's not on it!
Cats got my tongue but this post is fun.

I bet you do tink hahaha
Priceless, Linda. The kitty finger puppets are adorable! P.S. I dig your new avatar--way cool! xox
Erika: the hoodie avatar is for Xumas silent hoodie march and Lezlie has done it too today.
This man who killed that black boy needs to be arrested.
HUGGGGGGG
Linda, Thanks for letting me know about the silent protest. Kind of out of the loop right today. -E
Erica.. somedays I wish i was out of the loop hahah
"Just because we can, does not mean we should."
Yep, that just about sums it up. And yet, I'm sure that there will be plenty of people interested in making these "crafts".
On Tues and Weds, the cartoon "Pickles" featured Opal Pickles making actual bunnies out of dust bunnies--pretty close.
Wow, that is something all right! The finger puppets are cute. All my cats are shedding right now, and I could probably make an army of puppets, but I think I'll stick with my live critters!
I met a woman once who wove cat hair into sweaters. She offered to do one for me but my cat said "NO"

My friend just told me she knew someone who made sweaters out of her Husky's hair!
I believe my cat just ordered this on Amazon. I see craft-mania going on here at home during the day while we're at work ...
My cats knit wonderful doylies -- they would make nice gifts, execpt they are soaked with spit.

(not you but ....THAT)

Cats are so smart that some people find it creepy. I am not among them. I have always had one. HP Lovecraft believed that cats were a power in the nether world and would look out for those humans that looked out for them in this world.
Those are adorable, and I don't find it weird or creepy. I've got three dogs and when I brush them I leave the hair underneath our trees and hope that the squirrels will take it for their nests.
This is so cute Linda, you are such a good writer, so great at making us smile, laugh out loud and sometimes tear up. Thanks for coming back. Loved this and look forward to more. Hugs to you too! (Liked your last post also btw.)
