Upgrade alert! Changes on Open Salon (Update #5 at bottom)

Rate: 66 Flag

As you may have noticed, we're rolling out some exciting navigational changes to OS. Here are the big ones:

User blogs: Each blog now includes four tabs at the topic: "Blog," "Activity," "Favorites," and "Followers." The "Blog" tab is the default option and it looks pretty much the same as the standard user page used to look -- you can still sort posts by "Recent," "Editor's Picks," and "Popularity." The "Activity" tab shows a blogger's recent activity on Open. The default is set to display each user's most recent comments, but you can also check out which posts a user has rated (by clicking on "Ratings"). The "Favorites" tab lists each blogger's favorites -- you can sort them by most recent or from A to Z. The "Followers" tab is brand new: It shows all users who list this particular blogger as a favorite on OS. We've also added a list of each user's most recent posts on left side of the page above the list of his or her most recent comments.

Topics page: The new page has 30 popular tags that you can sort by "Editor's Pick," "Top Rated," "Most Viewed," Most Commented," and "Most Recent." You can search for posts written by all users, or only those written by your favorites.

People/blogs page: First of all, it's now called "Blogs" instead of "People." You can sort user blogs by "Editor's Pick (Total)," "Top Rated," "Most Viewed," "Most Commented," and "Favorites." Within each of these categories, you can choose whether to view all users (or only your favorites). You also sort blogs by time frame (ranging from the past 4 hours to the past 1 month).

We're all really excited about the changes we've made to the site. My personal favorite may be the new Topics page -- it makes navigating OS by subject matter infinitely smoother. (It's a tough call, though -- all the new features are pretty cool).

Please use this comments thread to let us know what you think (and to ask any questions you may have)! I'll be checking back regularly to answer questions and to address any issues raised here. Your feedback is more than welcome and feel free to point out any bugs we may have missed while testing (I know you will...).

 Enjoy!

UPDATE: The new "Blogs" (formerly "People") page is now live! Tech is currently hard at work solving the following glitches: The inability to remove favorites who have left OS, the problems with AdSense, and the issues using various browsers (Opera, Chrome, Safari, earlier versions of Firefox). Thanks for your patience while these problems get worked out. And let us know if you come across any other bugs!

UPDATE #2:  The "Next" problem on the "Most Recent" page has been fixed! You can easily navigate through the most recent OS posts once more.

UPDATE #3: The "View Responses" issue on Open Calls has been resolved. "View Responses" now directs you to a list of  posts written in response to that particular Open Call.

UPDATE #4: The "Most Viewed"/"Most Commented" glitch on user blogs has been fixed. You can now sort all your posts (and those of other bloggers) by number of views and number of comments.

UPDATE #5: All known glitches have been fixed (including issues concerning Adsense).  Let us know if you encounter any other problems!

Really excellent changes. I had been wondering what my actual readership was (as opposed to ratingship and commentship). Asked and answered. Thanks.
What I've seen so far is just excellent - extremely useful for those moments when I think: "crap, what was the name of that post I was reading this morning?"
Just noticed it, pretty cool, or as the hip kids say "Wicked Awesome!!"

Those hip kids were back in 1982!!! But still...:)
Makes things much easier~thank you~
Awesome! these are some great changes. thanks for these wonderful additions to the site.
Like everything I tested so far. Thumbs up!
I really like the Followers tab. Merci.
I like the topics tab too! And the followers, and the most recent scroll. It's all good.
I should say, almost all of these were suggestions made by users. It took an enormous amount of time (and effort) for our hard-working tech team to pull these together. To them, a big thanks!
Fantastic changes. I really enjoy them and they are easy to use. I especially like the my recent posts section. The activity button is great. What is the follower button exactly? I know, silly question but consider with whom you are talking.
I just noticed these changes and they HAVE BLOWN MY MIND! I can't stop playing with the new tabs! THANK YOU OS GODS!
i've just cruised through the changes — a test drive — wow! i'm impressed. thank you ... very cool.
Emily,
Seems like you are promoting user friendly reader engagement.
Appreciated.
Thank you, seriously cool changes :) :)
Follower button is those who've Favorite'd you, Spud
has someone told you that the "Recent" feed won't go back from page one?
Is this why AdSense was down today?
As Kerry noted, BIG kudos to the tech team on this one. They did a great job! To Brian, we're working on the "next" problem on the Most Recent page right now, thanks!
The update looks great. I notice that the "most viewed" and "most commented" sorts on the blog popularity tab don't work. Also the cover page "most recent" post display doesn't go past the first page.

But the update itself includes a lot of information that I have wanted for a long time.
Mishima -- Tech's sorting out that problem now. Thanks!
You're doing a Heck of a Job Emily!

{[R]}
Emily, I know it is not a popular browser but there are a whole host of problems on Opera. For example, the "next" click does not work at the bottom of the page. This is just one example. Your tech people will see loads of other Opera issues.

Thanks for bringing this to their attention.
Very cool changes!
I've been checking out the new features, and loving them. Well done!
Very cool, indeed, Emily. Is this a "rolling change" or must we do something to incorporate the new tabs at the top of our blog page?

I noticed some have them already while others do not. I am guessing the change will be universal to all blogs and not selective to certain ones.

Thanks for keeping this place in constant motion and with useful upgrades.
Excellent upgrades Emily - I've heard grumbling for this stuff since I've been here - it is so nice to see it completed!

On the 'Favorites' tab, when you click on 'remove favorite' next to any favorites who have left OS, it goes to a 'page not found' message. That's the only quirk I've seen.
Just had a look and these changes are very nice. Thanks for thinking of and/or responding to them.
Emily, Kerry and OS staff ~ thank you very much and I have to say these are great enhancements to the site! I am just scratching the surface of all the new functionality added today. It is very nice to have the topic pages as a type of secondary front page. The only problem I see so far is that some spammers are loading their spam-type posts with all of the topic keywords (such as "books," "design," or "travel") and when a viewer goes to "Most Recent," many of these spam posts show up as the "Most Recent" and make it problematic and more time consuming to find the legitimate posts on the list.

I am also finding some OS members who added me as a "Favorite," but I didn't know about all of them until just now looking at the followers' tab on my blog page. It must be that some email alerts did not get through telling me that these members had added me to their lists, but now there is an easy way for all members to see everyone who added them as a favorite, just in case they did not receive an email alert along the way.

Another wonderful feature that you added allows a look back in time at all bloggers' comments or ratings ever made on OS! Anyone can look back in time and find posts of others that they had rated or commented on, but may have forgotten about these many months later.
Love these changes. I'd like to point out though, that the ratings are not 'sticking' for some of us using Chrome and lesser Firefox versions. I have no doubt this is temporary.

Again, the new features are terrific. Love em.
I forgot to rate THEN comment/post so my rating got lost. (I usually rate after I post)

But I wanted to rate, so I did a comment/post a second time. That's whats I was talking about in my prior post.

Thank you.
You've been here what, ten minutes and you've given us all this? Thank you!

Lezlie
The upgrades are GREAT. Thanks to all who worked on this, it really will enhance the OS experience.
I about flew out of my seat to see all my past comments listed. These are tremendous changes. Thank you. And kudos to the tech team.
Wow!! I'm stunned that you've actually managed to capture all our comments and ratings back the beginning of time...meaning in my case, October 2008! It was a kick to be able to see what my very first comment on OS was. What an archive. And yes, this will make it so much easier to go back and check to see where we commented and if the blogger responded, something many people like to do with more than their last 4 comments.

Great changes - thanks so much!!
Very interesting and cool! I'm thrilled to be able to know how many views my "most read" blog has had (almost 10,000!). I didn't think there was a way I could find that out, and I always wondered about it.

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard on this.
Unfortunately, the changes appear to have wiped out the way I do 95% of my reading. Going back (or forward) chronologically using Most Recent no longer works.
OK, anyone else having trouble updating old posts in Safari?

I just tried to update one of my old ones to add one of these standard tags (I realized I've mostly used non-standard tags, so can't take advantage of the new "sort by tag" system unless I go back and add'em to old posts) and when I did so, I lost my embedded videos on that post (all I did was add a tag and hit "Update"). I tried going in to add them back by putting the code in the HTML editor again, but it won't take.

I created these posts back when I was using Firefox, so I'm wondering if it's a browser issue?
Thanks, the simplicity is good. Appreciate the changes and the chance for input. Bea.
This is terrific. I recently joined and was wondering how I would access some of this information -- and I need wonder no more.

Thanks!
Wow. I feel like one of those amnesiacs of legend, regaining memory after X years (in this case, two).

Holeee crud, that's a lot of comments and ratings.

But not nearly enough lately...

THANK YOU, Salon. We knew you were working on this. You told us. I know the impatient tappyfooting must have driven the techs nuts, but this is marvelous.
What happened to the view-counting feature? (It was connected to the Author's keywords.)

How is it possible to gauge the readership of a particular post now?

---GG
It's like Christmas in June! Very nice of you all to make these changes.

Just a suggestion: Many have needed of late to "take a break." Is there some kind of status line that could be created allowing us to say simply "I'll be back soon, please enjoy my archives until then"?
What I note that in my comments section I can find exactly where and when I made a total jackass out of myself. It's so useful not to lose track of that moment!
Yay! I like that we can see how many views each article got at a glance. Thanks for all the hard work, everybody.
Yay! It's like getting a tune up on your favorite old car!
Nice, nice! I never knew what the stats were after about 48 hours, because it was so impossible to find a post. The topics designation was high on the wish list, too.

Thanks!
Great and thanks...now is there any chance someone will figure out a way we can send a message to everyone on our message-mailing list without having to enter each name one at the time???

That would be the ultimate fix.
Thanks again and fingers crossed it happens soon.
The topics tab is awesome. I just tried it out, and it's great to browse the topics.
Great job! to Emily and everyone on the OS staff...Thank You!!!!
Emily: I'm pretty happy with most of these changes except for one. What happened to being able to see my page views?

I used to be able to click on one of my story tags and they would pop up. Not anymore. Please advise.
These are magical improvements, the biggest changes I've seen since I came here in August, 2008! Many thanks for the time and effort it took.
While I would never use a word like cr*p, I nonetheless agree wholeheartedly with everything Owl_Says_Who says - except, of course, for the word cr*p.
Wow! I thought it was something I did-wrong- that made the page look so different all of a sudden. Thank you for initiating and the technical team for instating. ~R~
These are AWESOME changes! Thank you OS!!
Hi, I just started using OS yesterday, and this is one of the easiest navigation methods I have seen, easy to manipulate, and find what I was looking for. Thanks for all of your hard work.
That's nice. I don't have a firm grasp how OS works anyway (ie where to respond to comments/ that "update"posts the article) and since being reletively new at this is getting to be a weaker reason by the day, I thought I would blame the everything in my life on spending my child in a home built over the Sedgwick Trench.
The changes are excellent. Thank you!
One bug I found after posting my comment last night is when I am on my blog and navigate to the the "Blog" button and hit "Popularity," only "Top Rated" for the time period "All Time" works. If I try "Most Viewed" and "Most Comments" the screen never changes to the new parameters, even picking "Most Comments" for just 4 Hours has no effect. As far as software and hardware, this is being viewed by my on a relatively new Mac with the Intel chip and a very recent version of Firefox.
Is it just me? Am I the only one who can't get beyond the first page on Recent Posts? Some updates.
Emily you so rawk. You do. Thank you.
Well, this is just the cat's meow. I'm most excited about the longer list of my own previous comments, so I can't forget where I've been. Thank you!
Note to Tink: "Wicked awesome!" has been replaced by "Sick!" So, these new changes are indeed very, very sick.
Hi! Any chance Love will continue to be a topic?? (It's the feed I read first -- and the reason I'm here!!)
Can you change it though so when you click on a specific item, you can get that? It is frustrating. For instance, when you click on anything on the right lower column like the fruit kitchen challenge, you can only get the entire list. I never found the challenge responses.
I finally got the opportunity to check these out and I think you have really added some nice features...haven't seen them anywhere else before.
I think the new features are great. Keep up the good work.
"now is there any chance someone will figure out a way we can send a message to everyone on our message-mailing list without having to enter each name one at the time???"

my 2 cents in case this gets added to the list of next possible tech changes: I'm not sure this would be a good thing. I think it would encourage even more mass mailings than are happening now, without people considering at all whether the people they're PMing ever come and read their blogs in response to them.

The issue, of course, is that our address book is populated with our own favorites, not our "followers" (to use the new OS term). It would make more sense to be able to PM your followers that you have a new post up. Of course, followers can see this in the feed on the right side of their blog, but it can be easy to miss someone's new post if you have a lot of favorites and/or a lot of posting is going on.
I . . . I . . . I . . .

(sob!)
Fantastic features! Glad to see Open Salon's update are practical and functional, unlike other web sites that change for change's sake.
I discovered this this morning and I really appreciate the changes, thank you. - And I'm not just saying that because I'm hungry and seeking distraction in OS! ;)
There are some really fascinating improvements which will no doubt keep people spending even more time on OS than they are already. Seeing our first comments and rates? Interesting, but a little weird. Props to everyone who worked on it. Hopefully the glitch of not being able to advance past page one on the "Most Recent" will get fixed soon, and AdSense will come back for those who use it.
@ Silkstone - but I think the fact that our last 5 posts are now listed to the left will really help our followers see what they may have missed. I LOVE this feature.
And "spell check"!!!! I'm running off to find this now.
Thank you to all OS Techs
Thanks to OS tech for fixing the "Most Recent" glitch which was preventing us from going past page one.
You've made many people here happy with these changes. (A belated "greetings and salutions.")
I like the changes. Very nice.
These new features are awesome. I have always found it hard to locate older comments that I left on a blogger's post. Thanks for the upgrades. You rock! R
Very cool, thank you for all the new and improved fun around here. I love it!
Good stuff. Thank you.
This editor seems to be terrific so far. Happy birthday Scanner and belated birthday to any and all!
Sounds good to me, but I am so computer illiterate that by the time I catch up to and on to new changes, they become passe.

But it sounds good to me.
Thanks! I really appreciate these improvements alot!
Great changes!! Thank you!
Damn good work for a Yankees fan. Bravo to all. This was backbreaking, I know.

Small question, maybe I missed something... there's a whole lot of white space on the right nav between my Favorites and Updates. Will something go in there?

Thanks to all!
Thanks for keeping us up to date...
Some of these changes seem pretty cool.
The coolest is the tab showing who is following... nice to know!
Sally, I don't know if this answers your question or not, but Google AdSense has temporarily disappeared since the tech upgrade, so that's why all the white space. I understand they're working on it.
Thank you thank you, you've solved my most pressing difficulty in being able to track my comments :).

Appreciate the work you're doing in selection for EPs as well, it seems to be a much more level playing field for all of your writers - there's a lot of good stuff flowing through these OS pages, hopefully you'll manage to find many more of them than the previous editor/s might have had time for (trying to be PC here ;).

Kudos to Emily and the techies!
Thanks for the new features. This really improves the usability of the site.
I like the changes, Emily. Aside from the AdSense problem, one other small glitch: When I try to rename one of my lists--and save the change--it doesn't appear on the blog. It just remains "New Links." Thanks.
Oops. Never mind the renaming link problem. It just took a few minutes to show up on my blog.
Thanks for the news. Those are some good features.

I'd like to see “followers” called something that made these people feel a little less like a congregation following a religious icon, but the tab is still useful even with the awkward name.
Very nicely done! Thank you for the fine work and extra effort,
R
this is a wonderful thing.
thank you so much.
Awesome changes! Kudos to everyone at OS especially the hard-working tech team! I miss not getting my picture from my blog when I post on facebook. I reported it! Love also the valuable information Charles Yoo provides. OS rocks!! rated~~
Hi Stellaa -- Thanks for letting us know about how drafts are showing up before they are published. Tech is working on fixing that bug now.
You are a breath of fresh of air. Thank you for making the people on OS a lot happier. The changes, so far, have been great!
Nice Site. Just one question so far. You have Rating/Views/Comments counters on some pages. It seems like the views counter increments when I view my own post. Is this a feature or just a nobody cares thing? As an old retired web programmer I look at stats from a view that if it's worth displaying on the screen how is it most useful. I don't care how many times I viewed the post as the poster.
I just realized when you choose "open call" from the pull down menu of topics, it does not show up under the "open call" topic. I had to manually type "open call" versus using the pull down menu which brings up "open+call" in the tags.

FYI.
Well! What a nice surprise to come back from vacation to!!! My thanks to whoever coined this stroke of genius. And, as excellence always pays off, I'm sure we'll all be enjoying your site more than was possible before you arrived here.
Sparking -- Thanks for letting us know about the "Open Call" issue. Tech's fixing that now.
Great work. Thank you.
this is all very cool and a very big change compared to OS history. I thought you guys might be giving up on altering the gui. however, could you please, please open up the feature alteration/suggestion process somewhat & allow some discussion/feedback with the full understanding that nothing is mandatory. have been asking for this for ages.
