Open Call: The Year in Sanity

Rate: 6 Flag

When Jon Stewart announced his October 30th "Rally to Restore Sanity," most of us thought it was about time. The country -- at least the parts of it that get the most attention -- seems to have collectively gone off the deep end. Over at big Salon, rarely a week goes by that we don't find two, three or even four worthy contestants vying for the This Week in Crazy prize.

So, in spirit of encouraging rational thought, we've decided to flip that feature on its head and launch The Year in Sanity. We want to celebrate the unsung heroes of our days: people in the public eye who behave sanely, rationally and even bravely in the face of unabiding craziness. We want to honor those who have acted in a mature and honest manner when fudging and evasion would be expected. In short, we want to tip our hats to those rare, elusive public figures who did things that made you think, "Hey, you know what? That was a sane, adult and admirable way to deal with that situation!"

Last night, a few Salon staffers kicked off the process by nominating Michael Bloomberg, Jim Joyce, Peter Beinart, Constance McMillen and Jimmy Kimmel.... but we need your help! Sanity is hard to find these days.

Blog your candidates for The Year in Sanity by Friday, October 29th at 9AM ET and be sure to tag your entries theyearinsanity

We'll feature our favorites on the cover of Open Salon and rank our top 10 favorites on Salon on the eve of Jon Stewart's rally.

Oh you crazy kids, thinking there's sanity!! Haha, fools!! Next thing you'll try and tell me that the dems and the repubs have a plan of action to get this country back on its feet!!

Hahahahahahaha!!! Or that the earth is round. BLASPHEMY!!

**Runs off to make some macaroni art**
You know, last night I watched the old movie "The Best Years Of Our Lives" and was struck by the current, strong, collective departure from those values and protocols that were once held so dear. It is so good to know I am not in a minority of those who miss the presence and celebration of decency and pure kindness in the world. This is a great idea!
Heh. Seeing “theyearinsanity” my eye parsed “The Year Insanity.” I'm not saying we shouldn't use your suggested tag. It would be confusing to change it at this point. But I just wanted to note with amusement that it suffers a bit from the same problem that I heard had happened when someone made a political web site to answer the question “Who Represents?” and named it—well, you can guess. In other words, I'm a big fan of separating one word from another. :)

I do think the open call is a good one.
Sane people.....saaane people. Who do I know that would fall into that category.....saaaaannnnnne people........
What an original idea!!!
I'll have to give it some thought.

sanity in the glen beck and sara palin rhetoric? respsonding to sara palin's logic in her barack hussein obama rhetoric would go something like this. sara, since when are bristol and willow christian names? pagans worship trees and willow is a tree, therefore since you named your child after a tree you must be a pagan. sound absurd??? yet this is the type of logic that is used repeatedly by the right. unfortunately democrats if you want to win this race you are going to have to play their game and use simple phrases that get people fired out not your long drawn out logical rhetoric.
Ah you've already nominated Mayor Mikey--damn. Well, this is still worth thinking about. I mean, how many could there be?
As I recall, the first time in my life there was sanity was in 2004, when the Red Sox finally won the World Series, and of course, again in 2007. Other than than there's been only glimpses of sanity. There certainly hasn't been any political sanity. But there's a fine line between genius and insanity.
I'm sorry, but I don't know any!
Hillary Clinton... my hero
I'm going with Viggo Mortensen and Perceval Press.
