As you may know, an 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit Japan today, setting off a devestating tsunami, which may affect places as far off as the western coasts of the Americas.

Over at big Salon, Adam Clark Estes is collecting some of the most alarming videos as part of our coverage of this disaster. If you see a video of the quake or the tsunami, post it on your blog and tag it "tsunami video." We'll add the best ones to our Salon liveblog, with a hat tip and a link back to your Open Salon blog.

To any of you who are in areas that may be affected: First and foremost, please stay safe. Also, let us know if you'll be documenting the events as they unfolds.

Emily: Tsunami sirens going off here in the Bay area. My loved one went to work and took the subway and sat quietly during that 6 minutes it takes to go under the bay. I told him to take pictures if anything happened (always thinking of that blog :)). He is safe and sound now behind his desk.

We are the lucky ones. My heart goes out to Japan today.

Thanks for the OP. I am sure a lot of people had to WAVE a lot of their lives goodbye....So sorry for them and more.
I'm just inland from Crescent City, but too far to get there before the waves go by...Crescent City was completely flattened by the tsunami of 1964, I hear authorities aren't allowing anyone down in the low lands today, the only way in that I know of from my area.
Crescent City has the exact harbor shape (a crescent ) to create devastation, they have an unprotected harbor filled with shrimp boats, the southern part of the commercial area is right along the shore, but no news here yet of damage from any higher waves. Waves of 6-7 feet were expected, but it's the relentlessness of the inland surges that cause the worst trouble.
Pelican Bay maximum security prison is just north of Crescent City, but the shape of that particular bay I believe is more protected from the direction of today's anticipated waves.

My heart goes out to the people of Japan, what a terribly strong earthquake. This earthquake was 8.9, the highest recorded earthquake is 9.5, in Chile, 1960.
I note you asked for the tag "tsunami video" but you tagged your own post "tsunami videos". I assume that you'll look for both tags now that the confusion has been introduced. If not, you should make your post and its tag consistent.
Thanks for posting Emily! I haven't turned on the TV and had no idea!! Seems like there has been above normal seismic activity in the last 2 years. I will say a prayer for them....rated~
Crescent City has waves surging in over 8' currently...
Would a tsunami in my bathtub count?
Current news is that the Crescent City Harbor has been destroyed by tsunami waves from the earthquake, the docks destroyed, four people were swept out to sea, they are still searching for one missing.
