Open Call: Heartwarming holiday stories

Rate: 7 Flag

The holiday season -- which here in New York at least officially begins the day after Halloween -- is stressful and hectic, especially during hard economic times like these. And we often grumble about all that is wrong with it: the family arguments, the horrific travel experiences, the endless supermarket lines. But this Thanksgiving, we want to hear your heartwarming tales of times when the holidays actually brought your family together in a meaningful way.

That said, we're not looking for "The Christmas Cottage." We want to read about authentic and touching holiday experiences that don't whitewash reality.

Be sure to tag your pieces "heartwarming holiday stories," and blog them by 10 AM Wednesday, November 23rd. We'll feature our favorites on a special Thanksgiving cover of Open Salon and we're hoping to cross-post a few onto Salon as well.

What the world needs now, is love, sweet love. I think this is a great way to escape the negative stuff in the news AND the stress of holiday travel and other issues, and focus on the good. Wonderful idea!
With apologies to Tolstoy:

Heartwarming family holiday stories are all alike; every unhappy family holiday story is unhappy in its own way.
@Alysa -- Thanks! Hope you can contribute one...
@Stim -- You're welcome to write unhappy ones as well. (Last year we had a "Holidays from Hell" open call, so we decided we'd mix it up). I also think it depends what you mean by "heartwarming." We're not looking for stories about perfect families where everyone's happy. We're interested in reading ones where the holidays managed to help people reconcile, forgive and accept each other, despite everyone's myriad flaws.
Great idea Emily! I could use a break from my political rants and like Alysa says, "the negative stuff" that's in the news these days. I didn't have much luck with, My brilliant second career, Mr. Mom...I thought I would get more views on that one...lol...
There does seem to be a lot of anxiety and hardship out there. I am not sure if it is just the middle age squeeze of my peers or if it transcends age. Heartwarming stories are needed.
Emily: I spent two hours last night writing a piece for this open call – and got booted out by system before I could save the draft! Doh! Back to the drawing board. Hope to have something to you before Wednesday. I'm sure you'll get loads of great submissions. :)
I bet you already read mine and still have tears in your eyes, and your finger on "Give Tink an EP cause his story is what the holidays are all about!!"

I'll be over here holding my breath!! Teehee!!!(no, not really, tell Kerry to stop dancing, I'll be around till the day they shut the lights out for lack of payment!! :D)
Thanksgiving Gray...how heartwarming? You decide.
Are we allowed to resubmit an old one? My essay "A Very ACLU Christmas" was an Editor's Pick back in 2009. I don't have one more heartwarming than this: http://open.salon.com/blog/floor_pie/2009/12/01/a_very_aclu_christmas
10:00am Pacific, Central, or Eastern?? Eeek!! I think I missed it.... :/
