I Am A Bubble Child

Rate: 4 Flag

I was an honor student all through school.   I had a phenominal memory and could do math in my head at a fairly rapid pace.   I excelled at French an Spanish, and I retained a lot of atomic numbers and chemical symbols when I was in chemistry.   So, when I went to college, I was stunned to find out that I wasn't really prepared.   She of the AP exams and French scholarships was missing a vital part of education.   I was useless at critical thinking and composing an argument. This was Thanks to years of multiple choice tests.  I am sure i wore out a ridiculous amount of number 2 pencils before I graduated highschool. Instead of learning to problem solve and be articulate on paper, my classsmates and I spent our time shading in circles and ovals and picking c when we were in doubt.   Our brains were primed for memorization and regurgitation instead of critical thought.   To this day I struggle to compose my thoughts, and I haven't even gotten into grad school yet.  Hope I survive.

Good luck, I think you'll be all right, but I know high stakes testing is having a terrible effect on education.
I taught a first year seminar class at a major private university and the students were woefully incapable of having a discussion, giving a presentation, critical thinking, and writing a specific sentence. And they had all gotten A's in AP English. They were shocked and alarmed at their prof telling them these things. It was not a happy picture. I hope the learning curve is getting better for you now.
More people like you need to speak out about how education is failing America's young people. You will get into grad school. That you recognize your deficiencies means you can work on them. Good luck!
The saddest part is that the teachers are stifled when they try and really teach. They have to scramble to prepare students for asessment tests and hope they don't have to pass too many failing students on to the next grade.
Great title. Those multiple choice tests were THE THING when I went to school as well. Now we have No Child Left Behind with its even greater reliance on standardized testing. In my state, the kids are taught essay writing but it's a cookie-cutter formula. I wince every time I read one. Each one sounds exactly like the one before.

Best of luck finishing your degree. You'll be fine. :)
