I've spent most of my life as a journalist, arts and film critic, editor, educator and writing coach. I've been lucky enough to travel extensively and to meet many fascinating famous and ordinary people. I live in a beautiful part of the world that sustains my soul. I am blessed to have an understanding husband and loyal friends. I have a sharp edge, but underneath I am an idealist and a romantic. My heart breaks at all the stupidity, injustice and cruelty in the world. I will never stop fighting against it.

What price loyalty?

"The subject who is truly loyal to the chief magistrate will neither advise nor submit to arbitrary measures." -- Junius
"You're loyal like a dog," a friend once told me. I'm still not sure if it was a compliment, bu… Read full post »
All the lonely people
Many years ago when I was a reporter for a daily paper I covered a visit by Mother Teresa to the small northern Alberta town of Lac la Biche. I have never been religious, nor have I ever been a supporter of hers, but she said something

I can't accept the notion being bandied about at OS that anyone who writes anything is a writer. Yes, they may have taken pen to paper or clicked a mouse, but by the same logic, anyone who has ever sung in the shower is a singer, and anyone who has ever… Read full post »
Gang rape: Facebook shares the spoils of crime
A couple of nights ago a former student of mine posted some images on Facebook. The title was something like Guy Gets Revenge on His Girlfriend. I accidentally clicked "Like" before going to view it but half-way into the process, I decided it was too much bother to open it. Then… Read full post »

The nature of forgiveness
Forgiveness is something I think about frequently. The hows, and the whys, and the very nature of the act. The dictionary definition of forgiveness is to "pardon" someone. I used to be a very forgiving person. Years ago, a close friend asked me in disbelief, "When does self-preservation kick in… Read full post »
Last hippie standing UPDATE

I've thought about this a lot lately. Am I the last hippie standing?
It seems like I am the only one of my friends who still wants to stay up late, drink a little, and maybe even smoke some pot. I didn't used to be alone in… Read full post »

UPDATE: Whoo hoo! We found a new place to live. I'm so excited. And no, it's not the dump above. I found a place today a few minutes from where we live now that has a spectacular ocean/city/bridge/mountain view. It has a big deck, a creek running beside… Read full post »
Let us now praise ordinary women (apologies to James Agee)

"She's a phony, but she's a real phony...Because she honestly believes all the phony junk that she believes." –– Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Being ordinary is vastly underrated. Everybody wants to be rich, famous and good looking, and really, aside from the money… Read full post »
These are a few of my favourite things -- for Pilgrim
1. What is your favorite word?
Don't think I have one but I do rather like sublingual. It's just sexy to say.
2. What is your least favorite word?Fart. I've never liked it.
3. What turns you on?
Fine writing, good films and music, seeing people achie…Memory babe
I've been thinking about memory a lot lately. Many here at OS write about their experiences as very young children of two or three years old. I can only marvel at their ability to remember their childhoods from such an early age. I have only one memory of being very young.… Read full post »

Spring fever
I know I have spring fever when I am restless for no reason. When I find myself wandering around the house looking for something and not even knowing what it is. When I can't sleep even when I'm tired, and wake

On this bright, chill day I think of you. Of a day we sat in the sun warming our hands on cups of coffee watching self-important people go by. Of how you smiled and said, “This is the best coffee I’ve ever had.” Of how I bought you another… Read full post »
What is real?
Disclaimer: This is NOT directed at anyone in particular. It is an issue that I have been thinking about for a long time. I'm also not going to pursue the academic theories around identity and a writer's right to have as many nom de plumes as they want, at least not… Read full post »
Someone asked me the other day if I had a favourite Christmas gift.
I hesitated before I spoke. I thought about the beautiful Birk's diamond and ruby ring my husband gave me two years ago. It is a delicate ring with four small rubies criss crossed by pave diamonds in… Read full post »
My year at OS: what a long, strange trip it's been
I joined OS one year ago, Dec. 11 2008. I was elated when I discovered it purely by accident, but also maddened to realize that it had existed so long by internet standards without me knowing about it. My first post was about my mother, who she used to be, and… Read full post »

Remembrance Day
I want to pay a brief homage to today, the day set aside to honour the many millions of war dead. I didn’t venture out to attend a ceremony on this cold, wet morning. Instead, I held my
I don't care what stupid people think UPDATE
I made a realization yesterday. I no longer care what stupid people think.
I mean, I've thought that I didn't care before, but I still did care a little bit, at least enough to present facts, argue, or walk away exasperated. Now I just walk away and banish them… Read full post »

This started out as the title suggests -- thanks to Beth Mann for the idea -- but it has morphed into something more. I'm going to mention the corny movies that always manipulate me into crying, then some of the more serious ones that evoke tears.… Read full post »
H1N1 – a survivor tells the truth about the media porker
I had the HIN1 virus last week, better known as swine flu, and
I’m doing just fine, thanks. It probably helped that I
didn’t know I had the dreaded virus until I was in the
final stages. If I had known, I might have been sicker purely for
psychological reasons.

Pumpkin Cheesecake Cupcakes
These are dead easy, moist and tasty. I like 'em for breakfast or dessert. I adapted this from a recipe I found online -- sorry I've forgotten where -- at a pre-school of all places. Apparently kids like to make them, too.
