Protests Against Fort Hood's Troop Deployment To Iraq

Rate: 0 Flag

On Saturday August 21, the US Army base at Fort Hood will begin sending 3,000 troops to Iraq, scheduled to stay for at least 12 months.  Obama administration officials are re-branding and straight up lying to the public about the war when they say “the last day of August marks the end of combat operations in Iraq."  You don't end a war by sending more troops.

On Sunday, Iraq veterans and others from around the country are going to be opposing this both visibly on the base and actually resisting this deployment in various ways. In a time when the military and the government have been caught with blood on their hands via the revelations from Wikileaks, this is a moment where people of conscience can act to influence many more people to stop the war crimes being committed in our names. The Wikileaks documents reveal soldiers firing into buses full of children, mortaring a villages, killing people at a wedding party including a pregnant women. We saw the pictures of Abu Ghraib and we remember the lies about weapons of mass destruction and many more of us have come to the understanding that these wars are being waged in the interests of U.S. Empire. We need to be out there with the truth.

Watch the Wiki-leaks Collateral Murder video here.

World Can't Wait will be bringing the message, "What Are They Deploying For? Murder, Rape, Torture, War!" As seen from testimony from Iraq veteran Ethan McCord watch here, people in the military, people who are thinking about joining the military and all of society can change their minds about these wars if they are challenged with the truth. This is what we are setting out to do, to bring out the nature of these wars to all sections of society and compelling them to act. If you are in Texas, this is a very important and rare opportunity to join in this kind of resistance and to be a part of spreading it.

We received this message from organizers of the protest action Sunday:

There will be a final organizing meeting the evening of Saturday, August 21st at 8:00 pm in the Killeen, Texas, area. Following this meeting, all participants will need to remain in the area for the next 24 hours. Contact forthooddisobeys@hushmail.com with your name, info, a brief bio and the degree to which you are interested in participating for more information and to learn the location of the meeting.

As a disabled Desert Storm veteran who is old enough to remember Viet Nam and brave enough to champion peace, I beg you all not to use this day to protest in this manner. I had a brother who bore the shame of having to change and hide his uniform when he returned home. I boycotted the parades of welcome home until we remembered those who served in Viet Nam in a respectful, meaningful manner. These young soldiers do not deserseve your disprespect. Blame for this war doesn't not belong to them. It squarely belongs to your government. It is your Congressmen, Seanators, and President who aim our military. Not one of the soldiers departing for that war zone are in charge of those orders. Your president signs every order. Congressmen and Senators pass the legislation to keep the funds running. Please be gentle in seeking peace. Do not add to the stress of these brave Americans who serve us. Choose your battlefield as carefully and fervently as you choose your causes. In doing so, I would humbly ask you find a more appropriate playing field for your protest. I would suggest the steps of the Capitol. I have found it fertile ground for protests in the past. Good luck and best wishes for peace in the future. Please help us make peace in a respectful, beneficial, peaceful way.
These american "soldiers" are not serving " us" They are serving the interests of Empire. They are engaged in an illegal, illegitimate war and people need to stand up and say no. And frankly, the whole excuse of "I was just following orders" was used during Nazi Germany and it is nota legitimate excuse for the bombing of wedding parties, the use of torture and killing children etc. This IS what is happening in Iraq. People need to be protesting the government and the military that is carrying out these crimes. It is necessary for people to critize the military and stop them if what they are doing is wrong.
