Yesterday evening, Wiki-leaks released 250 of 251,287 U.S. embassy cables entitled Cablegate. Read them here. The cables date from 1966 up until February 2010. These U.S. cables show the grotesque and mafia-like nature to which the U.S. pursues its imperialist interests. Iraq was the most discussed country.
From Wiki-leaks:
“The cables show the extent of US spying on its allies and the UN; turning a blind eye to corruption and human rights abuse in "client states"; backroom deals with supposedly neutral countries; lobbying for US corporations; and the measures US diplomats take to advance those who have access to them.”
These cables have been leaked in a time when the U.S is in the middle of two illegal wars of aggression, maintain blacksites and torture chambers such as Guantanamo Bay and Bagram prison. Not to mention, the U.S. has a whole history of launching coups, assassinations and funding reactionary forces like the Taliban in pursuit of it economic interests behind closed doors. This IS U.S diplomacy. It is within this context, that these cables matter.
As I was reading the cables, I was thinking of this quote by the revolutionary leader Bob Avakian: “Living in the U.S. is a little bit like living in the house of Tony Soprano. You know, or you have a sense, that all the goodies that you've gotten have something to do with what the master of the house is doing out there in the world.”
The leaks reveal U.S diplomats spying on foreign dignitaries at the request of Hilary Clinton, waging illegal coups, covering-up human right violations including indefinite detention in Guantanamo and maneuvering to attack Iran in the name of solidifying key economic interests in the Middle East, particularly in Iraq.
One particular documents demonstrates how the U.S and Germany worked together to cover-up the U. S's illegal indefinite detention in Guantanamo. They went to great lengths to ensure that the U.S. Doesn't have to take responsibility for destroying the lives of innocent people who had been cleared for release from Guantanamo. These detainees have intense psychological issues ( likely due to torture) and no place to live.
“ Beus underlined, Germany's preference for detainees who have some ties to Germany, noting that this connection would provide the government with a “plausibe” explanation for accepting certain detainees when faced with the argument that the U.S shoud be resettling them. German Services would naturally keep an eye on any resettle detainees within reasonable means. “
These documents are almost overwhelming because they reveal intricate details on how the U.S is functioning in around the world to maintain its position as an unchallengable global superpower.
U.S. Government officials are in panic mode and are already trying to take away attention from what is revealed in the documents and instead focusing on going after those who release the documents. The Obama administration said today that it is considering taking legal action against WikiLeaks for releasing classified documents. Wait, I thought we wanted to look forward and not backward? At least this is what this same administration said when people were demanding legal action against the Bush regimes for high war crimes.
The Obama administration alleges that the leaks put lives in danger. Yet, the U.S has yet to provide any evidence that the this is true. According to the Wiki-leaks website, There is no report from the U.S government that any of the Wiki-leaks releases have ever caused harm to any individual. In fact, one of the reason why Wiki-leaks is releasing the cables gradually is because they are reviewing them with great care. At one point, they even asked the Pentagon to help redact what they felt was harmful in the documents. The Pentagon refused.
You know what puts people's lives in danger? Having this sick and twisted system run the world
The administration is making a desperate attempt to maintain their legitimacy as the so-called leader of the free world. Let's be clear we do not need to nor should we accept their legitimacy. A government that wages illegal wars of aggression, lies about weapons of mass destruction, authorizes the targeted assasinations of U.S. Citizens, and gives amnesty to war criminals Bush and Cheney; should lose their right to privacy.
For those of us who understand the reality of what this government is doing around the world, now is defintely not the time to sit back and say this is nothing new. On the contrary, the fact that there are people who are risking their lives to show the exactly how the U.S. Government is functioning is a big deal indeed. How many times in history does the real story of the U.S agenda get printed in major media sources including the New York Times and The Guardian? And this is only day one of the beginning of the leaks!
A movement that it is determined to bring the truth about these leaks to people and what these documents actually indicate about the government we live under, could have a big impact on turning the tide. This is why the government is so freaked out. They fear the possibility that the masses of people in this country could begin to understand all that is being in their names. We have a responsibility to make sure that this fear is realized.
Wiki-leaks is calling on people to spread the word about these leaks. They are asking people to read through the cables and post excerpts from them with a link to the cable. What is desperately needed is for people to take responsibility for analyzing the beginning documents in depth and help spread the word about the content. Here is an example of one I did on twitter last night" #cablegate reveals U.S working in concert with corrupt drugs lords in Afghanistan. http://tinyurl.com/34agm39"
