How about we just replace American Idol?
Seriously, I hate this show. As a struggling musician, among other artistic pursuits, the likes of shows like American Idol can serve nothing for the music industry except to make success harder for people like me who are struggling from the bottom up.
My position as a struggling artist has never been easy. Going back to some of the great masters, consider that the likes of Van Gogh and other artists of his era and ilk did not become popular until after they died. Unfortunately, my art is not something that is likely to be appreciated by future generations. The songs I have written I have not had a chance to record properly, as studio costs are often through the roof. The scripts I have written have yet to be green lit by a studio exec.
Paula Abdul, however, and the entire system that created the American Idol craze, are unfortunate symptoms of the disease that harms the creative artistic fabric of America. Paula Abdul is one of those "singers" who got by on her looks. I have never been particularly enamored of Ms. Abdul's vocal talents, nor have I enjoyed the likes of the parade of followers: the Brittaneys, the Christinas, the Carrie Underwoods and Clay Aikens (I know Reuben beat him but still he's the guy who everyone knows). Money is the name of the game, not music, or art or integrity.
Get rid of the reality shows. Get rid of American Idol. Don't replace Paula Abdul, get Fox to come up with something new...and preferably scripted.

What about all her hits like....hmmmm....give me a minute....well I remember a video with a cartoon cat or something like that...and that should count for something!
yes, these days it seems like we have way too many "all-purpose" celebrities who are basically just famous for being famous. Washed up pop stars have only marginally more talent.
To be fair, I guess Abdul at one point in time did have dancing/choreography talent (former Laker Girl) but still, it seems like fame is a fairly capricious thing these days.
