Life's a Bitch and So Am I
Women.
You either love them, or you hate them.
That's speaking as a woman.
The late George Carlin once said that women were crazy, and men were stupid; but women were crazy because men were stupid. That may be true to a certain extent. The greatest sex appeal a man… Read full post »
Patriot Gamesmanship
So here it is Independence Day, and here I am in Enemyland - otherwise known as Great Britain, specifically England. I've been thinking a lot about this particular Fourth of July, in the days approaching the holiday. For some reason, this year, it's made me nostalgic and more homesick than I've… Read full post »
National Health vs National Wealth
OK, so yet again, there's a big debate brewing in the United States about the possibility of having universal healthcare; and yet again, there seems to be more wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth about the sort of plan that would benefit all citizens in the United States. More importantly,… Read full post »
Weapon of Mass Distraction
I'm a huge fan of Bill Maher's wit and observations, so here’s a New Rule for Bill to ponder: The government must use reality television and use it relentlessly and exclusively as a weapon of mass distraction in order to divert the public’s attention from the nation’s major problem
… Read full post »In the wake of all the expenses' scandal that's been consuming British life, British politicians and the British media for the past few weeks, there seems to be another phenomenon appearing on the political horizon here in the unusually sunny UK: that of the celebrity politician.
Now,… Read full post »
Sleeping With the Enemy
I have a confession to make.
Something has bothered me immensely since the days of my youth.
Something that I had once thought had been conquered with age,
experience and a jaundiced eye. Something that I thought another
life in a foreign country might serve to quell. Something so
totally incongruous… Read full post »
The British Are Revolting
Yes, the British truly are revolting.
Oh, I don't mean 'revolting' in the sense of the phenomenon known as 'British teeth', or the fact that this condition is a result of their appalling dental hygiene. I don't mean 'revolting' in the sense that, verbally, they have the filthiest mouths in… Read full post »
Karma, Miss Scarlett and Me
During a lull in proceedings in my normally hectic office earlier today, I took advantage of the quiet to browse through some of the British papers online. There's a big financial scandal in the brewing here, involving all three major political parties. It concerns MPs abusing expenses privileges. It… Read full post »
Mistaken Identity Crisis? (Debunking Some Myths
Last week, here in the UK, there was a national holiday which no one celebrated nationally.
April 23rd was a double whammy of an English holiday: Shakespeare's birthday and St George's Day.
I'm not speaking about the United Kingdom as a whole. Too often, people who don't live in this scept… Read full post »
The BBC: British Isn't ALWAYS the Best
I live in the UK, where television and radio, alike, are dominated by the entity fondly known as 'Aunty': the British Broadcasting Company, or the BBC.
Prior to the advent of satellite and digital broadcasting, most Americans, who didn't actually travel to Europe, only knew of the BBC through Masterp… Read full post »
A Word on Secession for Teabaggers Everywhere
A few months ago, a friend of mine sent me this by e-mail.
In view of the highly-charged atmosphere redolent these days amongst our friends on the right, stoked persuasively by the likes of Messrs Limbaugh and Beck and Ms Malkin, maybe our approach to their calls for 'secession' should… Read full post »
Dangerous Liaisons
I was going to use the original French for the title of
this piece (Les Liaisons Dangereuses), but I thought it
might bee too, you know, elitist, so I settled for the English
version, just so everyone, I hope, would better comprehend how
politics really does create strange
bedfellows.
The week or… Read full post »
