I have been hesitant to say very much on this ever since I was called a big ol' racist for saying that there are t-shirts being sold in Georgia with Obama as Curious George.
I said it to point out the way the tide is about to turn as the racists get desperate and less cautious in their invective.
Since there has been a well received humorous post about his ears, I can come clean.
The republican party is about to lose its religion.
They are tanking on the one thing they are thought to do right: money. Republicans were always the rich fatcats and the Democrats were the ones who were all about causes and social justice. Well, they screwed the pooch with their greed and the game just changed.
Also, they have a nice white lady to do the dirty work for them now. And it always sounds a little less awful coming from a nice white lady, doesn't it?
Not for me.
I live in the south and deal with this every day and have to allow for the age of the people I am listening to and categorize them as dinosaurs for whose deaths I am waiting with the patience built into a southern woman.
There is a LOT we tolerate in order to keep peace in the south.
For us, the racism is everyday happenings. For the northerners, it seems, the racism is a radical event that smacks you in the face every once in a while because it is so extreme.
It isn't extreme here. It is normal. Awful, but normal. We deal with it. We try not to make every family event a sparring match between the holdouts and the evolved. And so we smile and nod, sometimes grimace and nod.
I draw the line with my kid. "N" out of your mouth around my kid means that you will not be around my kid much without me right there to give you a dirty look if I catch you going there.
It is like a line in the sand saying, "OK, I will try for us to all just get along, but it stops with this generation. He will not hear "N" spouted off as if it is the Webster's correct term for black people."
But you can't fight all day every day. You have to live. That is us all just getting along.
Obama will not fix the dirty south.
Obama will make it worse. He will start firestorms of the last vestiges of grotesque racism. The KKK will re-emerge. Skinheads will spearhead that movement. Crackers will be too chickenshit to do it out in public like the skinheads, but they will buy their poison online and redistribute it. They will tell new more evil jokes as they grill and skin their kills. Obama will be fodder upon whom every social ill will be blamed. It will not be his fault, but the south, like Iraq, was broken a long time ago and nobody ever fixed it. It is still broken. There are a lot of strong analogies between racial division in the south and in Iraq. But I am not going there at this time. It is not the time to compare blacks and whites to variegated muslims. Do you see how living in the south has taught me when to just shut up and wait for a better time? That is what southern women do by direct example.
It will not be fun time in the country. I will stay home a lot.
I know, I live here. I have lived here my whole life. I have been on the front lines of social integration. I know who I live among. And I know who my friends are. I don't have a lot of friends that I spend real time with. Blacks in the south generally self-segregate and I am white; and whites don't like it when I don't tolerate their tacit racism. So I spend a lot of time with a very close and small circle of friends.
And even among them we don't talk about race. It just makes us angry. Maybe this time, the new south will rise up and stop this. Maybe Obama can be a rallying force, but the true change will have to happen from within.

In 1995, I heard the Grand Poobah of the KKK give his fatwa speech from Zinc, Arkansas. (That's disturbingly close to our favorite Arkansas deer-slaughtering carwash, for those of you playing the geography at-home game.)
In 1998, (I said 1998, people!) my now ex-husband worked in the Eudora Welty Library in Jackson, Mississippi. In the basement of that library, there was still a sign that said "Colored" over one of the water fountains, it was simply painted over.
In 2006(!) I watched a skinhead in Jacksonville, Florida fistfight in the middle of Park Street over his full back tattoo of Hitler.
My personal theory is that there is a certain amount of racial stupidity in the world. When less people became racially stupid, the ones left over had to take on more stupidity to make up for it. We'll call it "Jodi's Law of the Conservation of Dumbassitude".

1) a Southern woman
2) an outspken but tolerant person
You could get killed for it in some places.
By the way, no one on OS (except Dave Cullen) really says anything about it, but what do you think of the NOT so thinly veiled intolerance (racism) of vampires in the new HBO show True Blood? E -- have you seen it? You would get a kick out of it...they live in a small Louisiana town called Bon Temps...
In the 80's I lived briefly in Chicago. During my stay there I moved to a new apartment and several of my rather flamboyantly gay employees helped me - it turned into somewhat of a celebration. Nothing lewd or offensive to the average person, but someone watching me that day noticed.
When I got up to return the rental truck the next morning I found a fluorescent orange bumper-sized sticker plastered across the driver's side window.
It said; " The KKK is watching YOU"

Ellizabeth, the KKK isn't just in the south, though I was shocked to find this out.

Liz: there's nothing borderline about the McNasty/Palin campaign anymore. They have reached the wild-eyed, cornered animal stage. If we are lucky, we can simply watch as they chew their own limbs and faces off, but I would not put any sort of desperate act beyond them at this point.
I know my region and all the hope in the world is not going to make all of the out of work, poor, uneducated, socially segregated, economically suffering whites look for change as the answer. They are going to look for local comforts that they are familiar with and that is the hate machine that is racism.
And the rest of the country can cry and moan and gnash their teeth, but this is where I live. Every day. With my kid. The grocery line won't be safe for him not to hear it if we have a black president. And I really don't want to fight that fight every damn day. But I will if I have to.
I know some generation is going to have to be the one to do the heavy lifting to raise the boat of ignorance on race in the south. It looks like it is us. Thanks, Fate, for making it come when I have a 4 year old just learning words and starting public school!
I am not up for it. But I am voting for Obama. And bracing for the impact when it hits. My real hope is that he makes it worth the hell it is going to unleash in the south. If he gets in, caves to the position and does not fix health care, the economy notwithstanding, I am going to be a very angry white woman in about 4 years.
I hope he is read for this. But I really cannot imagine being ready for this.
And artsfish, I am leaving it there twice. Some things bear repeating!
You're right, ePriddy. I know something about your world, or at least another part of the world nearby. And beyond the pottery and the small circle of friends, it ain't so pretty.
"The new south is like the old south" -- Mike West
The South'll have a revival of that shit more openly. But, that little town, those people gave me hope.
A quote from an AP story about the race hatred being stirred up at McCains rallies: (notice this guy is a "former" McCain strategist)
John Weaver, McCain’s former top strategist, said top Republicans have a responsibility to temper this behavior.
“People need to understand, for moral reasons and the protection of our civil society, the differences with Senator Obama are ideological, based on clear differences on policy and a lack of experience compared to Senator McCain,” Weaver said. “And from a purely practical political vantage point, please find me a swing voter, an undecided independent, or a torn female voter that finds an angry mob mentality attractive.”
He doesn't get it of course. They are all over the racist vote.
It makes it seem like it will be easier.
The decades this takes to work its way out are not going to be fun. When the great depression hit, the violence against blacks increased as the frustration of whites increased. This time around, there will be video evidence and maybe that can make the difference.
Here is a social act of quiet resistance.
Next time you are bombasted with hate in a public space, get out your cellphone and act like you are taking a movie of it. I bet they won't want to be caught on tape doing it. But do this at your own risk, as it could incur violence. Don't do it with your kids around.
Civil disobedience can have new meaning with audio and video.
Finally, a reason to upgrade my cell phone.
People from all sides are telling them to stop - pointing out the danger - fearful of violence erupting because of their tatics. If what you say is true Ms Priddy (and I do not doubt that it is), these two are energetically priming the pump for the upcoming explosion and they should be tried and hung for inciting violence and treason when Obama wins.
Sigh, it makes me sooooo angry.
On that last topic, I very recently wrote a piece of dark satire, here.
I also have more serious, related thoughts on the campaign and road ahead here.
Please help with asking Saturday Night Live to refuse to have Sarah Palin as a guest until she publicly decries and denounces those who are doing the "kill him" shouts:
