14 Children, the GOP, and the bailout

Rate: 9 Flag

Firstly, let's establish that I am not making a judgment of the woman who had 14 children with no apparent means of supporting them except SSD payments to support them because of their poor health due to their premature births.  I am making a LOT of judgments about her.  So is everyone else who has given attention to the story.  But we will get back to this.

America has failed to make the connection between the bailout and the failed war in Iraq and Afghanistan.  I am hearing nothing about this.  Yet we prioritized a set of wars as being worth spending money and lives on for 6 years (I am forgiving the post 911-fury).  No one stopped this even when the phrase "billions per day" came into play on the actual costs.  We chose to afford that rather than fight the government and make it stop.  The Bush Administration ignored the home financial markets to chase some political chimera in a desert.  And they were tossed out with their hats.

That is all well and good.  They are out.  They are non parties to the recovery.  They are again betting on the failure of a system to line their pockets, just as they fiddled while the world economy was burning.   They can listen to Rush and Hannity and lick their festering wounds for another year before I actually have to pay any real attention to their tripe again.   I am convinced that corporate greed and war profiteering is the heart of the economic failure.  Some wise guys noticed that war pulled us out of the depression and decided to do it again since it has worked for the entire history of the world.  And hell, there was personal grievance to revenge as well.  Childish minds think only in stimulus-response patterns.

And so they failed to realize that the world has changed.  And that a land war in Asia is always a losing proposition.  And we are left with a bailout, a stimulus package, a Plan.  It is always the drunk who walks away leaving the dead in their wake.  Bush had lots of practice walking away from messes he made and did it again with apparent impunity.  So as he toddles back on to Texas, although not Crawford now that the set has been dismantled, we are left to clean it up and tell the mother her son won’t make it.  Blackwater has changed its name to an unpronounceable symbol.  Halliburton has had to tell Cheney how much money the war profited his secret accounts, although we will never be told that now that he is no longer a public servant with public taxes.  How convenient.

Just like the banks that took billions of dollars and did… anyone?  Bueller?

So we are back to a mother without the means to support her children choosing to have 8 more.  I blame the doctor who chose to pander to her desires rather than her needs.  And that fails to meet the standard of first doing no harm.  I am pretty sure that harm was done.  But we won’t know just how much for about 20 years when those kids grow up to either be productive citizens or drains on the system.  That is harsh.  But it is time for harsh decisions, like rent or utilities or roof over our heads or food.  And in the face of decisions like that, we have no more time to suffer fools gladly and hope everything is going to turn out ok in the end.  We all have about 20 years to find out if the retirement funds will recover or our children will be feeding us in our infirmity.

This is the end.  And now the grown ups need to retake the reins and send the children home to tend to their toys and their money while we clean up the mess.  So the GOP and the 14 children can all go suck their thumbs and cry while we ready the bailout teat for the next feeding.

I agree. I can be too judgemental and I usually let my husband rein me in but in the case of this woman, he's with me. I heard someone on Larry King making excuses for the doctor by saying that the previous FIVE times she did IVF she had 6 implanted and there was no way for her or her doctor to expect what happened. I want to know why she was still receiving IVF after 6 kids.

Did you see the SNL opening skit Saturday night? A bunch of Republican congressmen who only argued over whether Hannity or Rush was the best ever. It almost wasn't funny because it was so true.
I did see that. It was painful to watch.

I do not trust the veracity of the reporting on this woman and I tried to find out what the actual deal is.

I think that ANY individual with 14 children on a planet with vastly too many people to begin with is making serious sociological mistakes. And I do not care about the circumstances.

Having no judgments about the world around you must be nice, kind of like having soft fluffy clouds where your brain and emotions should be.

People judge based on their experience of the world. It is normal. Being so PC that you "never judge" is deviant.
Wonderful post... I couldn't agree with you more. And what gall some of these Senators had in boasting all the money they secured with the bailout they voted against -- YEAH MICA! I'm talking to YOU!!!

This whole GOP "comeback" makes me manic depressive: I'm either laughing at their complete lack of logic ("tax cuts! tax cuts!"), or I'm crying that they are getting so much airtime from the MSM. It's just so damn frustrating.
Why aren't people screaming that Bush and his fellow crooks are apparently going to suffering no consequences for their egregious lawbreaking and Constitution-destroying? Why worry about one woman with too many children? Where are our priorities?
Maybe I'm one of those weird X-Files fed conspiracy nuts, but I think this is an addiction problem.

OctoMom is addicted to babies.
The American government is addicted to the Haliburton flavored reach around they get from war.

(thumbified because I got to use the phrase "reach around")
Well, I wouldn't want to be a "deviant"! :-)

I can't imagine not making judgements (I just think sometimes I need to keep it to myself) but those people who don't seem to be happy..or they are blissful in their ignorance. Not an option for most of us.

I agree that the reporting may not be accurate but the above is what the octomom is saying happened (I think the person on Larry King was one of her publicists - I should have said that). I bet Octomom is lying about some of it but it's hard to tell what.

I think it's irresponsible to have so many children in today's world. Angelina gets a pass because half of hers are adopted.
Yes. GOPS and DEMS are thumb suckers.
On the the death bed the arms merchants
will be still sucking each other's CEP pals

'Um suck. Gutters!
ePriddy. Beautiful.
I do understand why people are up in arms over this woman.
I, and millions of other Americans, LOVE Jon & Kate Plus 8. These are two very normal people who had TWO children, tried for just one more and wound up with six, through no fault of their own. Kate makes so much sense as a mother that it's scary.

If we can watch and love people like the Gosslins, McCaughey's etc., even back to the Dionne's, then of course we can have an equal and opposite reaction to someone who is doing this for the wrong reasons.

The Gosslins are about what happens when sane and nice people have a lot of babies by accident. They deal with it with grace and wisdom. I've learned more from Kate Gosslin about how to raise my children and run my household than I have out of all the parenting books I've read *combined*.

When you flip that over and realize that our country will have to take care of "OctoMom's" children because she has a baby addiction, the feelings are negative.

The welfare system and charity are there for people who have children in good faith, believing that they will be able to care for them - but then fall upon hard times. That's fine with me. We should take care of folks. But having babies with the intention of using the state to support them is not cool in my book.

Yeah, I went judgmental on the woman. It becomes our business when we're asked to foot the bill.
All I can tell you is that the demented Bargain Basement Angelina Jolie doesn't get a dime from me. I have zero sympathy for her, since she created her own problem.

The SNL skit was painful. Can we just isolate these people in a chamber, oops I mean playpen, somehwhere so they can't hurt themselves or us? Bi-partisanship and cooperation is usually a good thing, but these people are so uninterested in what the right thing is to do for the country right now, that they deserve to be cut out of the loop entirely. Why should they have any input when all they want to do is ruin everything that hasn't already been ruined, and then vote against the bill anyway?
I wish I could rate this 1,000, I agree so much.

We have been bleeding billions of dollars on wars that will have a negative impact for an untold amount of time into the future, while our economy has been building precariously hanging over the edge of the precipice... and when people pull their heads out of the sand with a giant sucking sound, there is devastation all around.

And this:

"I think that ANY individual with 14 children on a planet with vastly too many people to begin with is making serious sociological mistakes. And I do not care about the circumstances.

Having no judgments about the world around you must be nice, kind of like having soft fluffy clouds where your brain and emotions should be.

People judge based on their experience of the world. It is normal. Being so PC that you "never judge" is deviant."

Directly, bluntly laid out perfectly. I have outrage to spare for the fiasco of the octo-woman, because so many disasters are made one indiviual at a time.

ePriddy, the way you express all this delights me.
Well, thanks for the support!

I have been holding my tongue for almost two months now about most everything and I was about to explode today when they started in on coverage of the sports doping scandal suring the signing away of the budget for the NEXT ten years.

Bush took advantage of a nation so devastated by grief and anxiety over 911 that it was the equivalent of mass rape. And we finally wake up fromthe trauma by the skin of our teeth and find out that we are not just fucked but damaged beyond repair to our previous condition.

The problem is so large and integrated into the economy at this point that getting it moving again is only the first of a long series of steps necessary to finally fix it.

I am concerned that America may have hit a peak. And now we are on the down side of it. Just like the mortgage boom and bust, we are in positions individually that are upside down and realizing that repairing that is even more trauma.

Some of us managed to live within reasonable means during the boom, and we are ok. Do you know the rage I feel for the fact that we took our fiscal lumps as we went along and that now there will be no relief for the middle class that kept their heads? The f-ups of the world on either end of the spectrum get bail-outs and payed off and the rest of us in the middle still get to wake up pand muddle through.

Argh.
It's really hard to keep being an INFP these days... there's a "J" that really wants to start pushing the "P" aside.

And yet, I don't want to be changed-- in that way-- by the current crises. Any of them. Even though I want to see it all clearly.

A very searing post, E... especially given what you've been posting lately. Yet, it is exactly on point.
I have been posting about my life, filled with joy and pleasure and interesting things to look at.

And that is the side of life that I choose to focus on, but I am aware of the rest of it, painfully aware. I have budgeted and scrounged to buy a home and improve life, and I quit my work to raise my son. I have been doing the things that I think are the right way to live.

And the people that have been doing most everything wrong are skating. I just needed to vent. I have no respect for some decisions made in the world. And I am not obligated to respect their choices. Sometimes people just need to GTFU and start doing the right things.

But the rest of the posts I have been making are just as real. Probably moreso.

The analogy of the childish behaviour of the GOP and the id-reductionist behaviour of the woman with 14 kids is the crux of my problems with the bail-out.

I get the conservative complaint, but the time for them to speak up was about 4 years ago when they were still riding the war wagon to prosperity. Now they need to shut up and let other more reasonable people talk.
What I don't understand is how women whose children are born addicted to cocaine can be prosecuted for child abuse, but women who, with their full consent, have more than three embryos transferred into their wombs at once cannot.

This isn't about money. The human body simply was not meant to carry and bear litters. Anything above twins, you're almost guaranteed to deliver early. Anything above triplets, there's a good chance at least one of the babies will be stillborn, die in infancy, or have severe medical problems.

Nadya Suleman is 33 years old. Yeah, she says she'd had 6 embryos implanted in each of her previous five IVF pregnancies and never had more than twins. But there is still the risk that ALL of the embryos would implant.

She could have chosen to give birth to those same eight babies singly or as twins (two of the embryos split into two sets of identical twins within the larger set of octuplets). But single babies or twins don't get you TV coverage. She willingly set her children up for severe health problems in order to get fame and fortune.
Don't get me started on this -- I'm waaay past judgmental -- I am OUTRAGED, and I don't understand why everyone else isn't equally outraged. Bitches like OctoMom give welfare a very bad name and provide fodder for the Repugnant propaganda machine.

In our house, we had to go through in vitro twice to have ONE child. We wanted more, but insurance cut us off after three tries. So who the fuck is paying this unmarried, non-working, non-insured mother to have a half-dozen procedures?

Call me Hitler, but this douchebag should have had her tubes tied involuntarily long ago. And who the hell is paying for the Angelina Jolie lips she's sporting?

No wonder California can't pay its bills.

I've got a solution to this -- let's send the bill for the care of this litter to the brain-dead doctor who did the procedure. I bet he'd think twice next time if he knew he had to pay for the consequences.

As for w and dick, how do I put this succinctly? Neither one can die soon enough to suit me. The fact that we will be sending pensions to these total fuck-ups makes me want to puke. They are the epitome of everything wrong with the system that put them in power in the first place, the same me-first, unmitigated, capitalist, wretched excess that pays their fellow greedy, ignorant incompetent friends billions in bonuses for utter failure.

I asked one question back when the talk of war started: What do bush and sick dick know about making war in Mesopotamia that no one else has figured out in 4000 years? The answer is simple: nothing.
You take the rhetoric to an unnecessary violent level, Tom.

She apparently had a settlement of about 150,000 that she has used to do this. That money, invested could have cared for four or so kids for a very long time, as she is still living with her parents.

She will be using her community college's daycare to go back to school to be a counselor. That is what blew my stack. Maybe you need a mental exam to be a counselor. Just what kind of advice would this woman come up with?

And at 33, you are supposed to have the basic sense god gave you and some life experience. She is making decisions like a 14 year old looking for attention.

Just like the Bush Admin, adolescent "I've got mine so screw you" attitudes that is how we got in this mess in the first place.

When the elections roll around again, I am going to point to this royal pile of steaming shit and ask, "Just what kind of lovely economy could YOU have made of this in two years?"

Oh yeah, you guys were the ones that broke it in the first place. I just hope that complacency doesn't call forth a new Newt revolution.
Excellent. Thank you for drawing the picture. You do that many ways, E!
You're right, my rhetoric is over the top, but living as I do surrounded by people who would have voted for w AGAIN can drive the most reasoanable person over the edge.

And OctoMom? She belongs in a loony bin, not in an in vitro clinic.

Last I heard she was drawing $490 a month in food stamps for her brood before this latest litter. That's $490 that isn't going to someone with a brain. As for that $150,ooo she financed this fiasco with:

"State documents disclosed Thursday to The Associated Press show that she received more than $165,000 in disability payments for an on-the-job back injury. The payments were made between 2002 and 2008, during which time Suleman gave birth to most of her six other children."

Obviously, her back was good enough to carry around a litter of 8.
Our insurance didn't pay for any fertility treatments when we were actively trying. I am bitter and resentful as well.

When I finally had a late life natural pregnancy, it changed my attitude about the lengths some people have gone to.

But it also made me really consider the ethics of it all. And her doctor should be punished.
