TV

With television, we all managed to live in the same neighborhoods, wherever we were.  We all sat by the same flickering fire, envisioning the same heroes and villains, caught in a spell of common imagination.  Millions of people listening to the same folk tales.

That is awesome. &nbs… Read full post »

The Deal

companion print ready

So this is how it happened.

I drove straight past the Chic-Fil-A and went to the IHOP and ordered the Never-ending Stack o' Pancakes.

I knew something was wrong immediately.

Two weeks later I am in the doctor's office with my husband who attends these strategy sessions wit… Read full post »

Philosophy: Skinspace

"Marie felt obliged to accommodate the Remora*, but she still resented the intrusion"

Here is an interesting spin on the right to life.

The right to anything begins and ends at the skin level.  Where I stop and air starts is the extent to which I have a… Read full post »

Culinaria: Diet Drinks

For people trying to avoid sugar, for any reason, you basicly get an option of 1 in the fast and medium food worlds.

Applebe's, Ruby Tuesday, Olive Garden, etc. all give you the same options: water, unsweetened tea, or the house diet soda.  Some foods cry out for soda… Read full post »

Shriners

 peacock_corrected square

As I was driving with my traditional, conservative Mother-in-Law, we passed the local Shriners lodge.  I said under my breath, "Damn Shriners," an almost sub-conscious reflex for me.

She was surprised.  But in a feeling of openness that is not always my way with her, I decid… Read full post »

Know Fat Chicks, ten things

As a woman who has decided to forego the pressure to be thin and just live my life as if it doesn't matter, I can say that fat is ok.

Full discolosure:  I am 5'8", a size 16-18, XL, blonde, and pretty.  Think of a white Queen Latifah, breasts,… Read full post »

Culinaria: Sweet Tea

We don't even ask for sweet tea.  If the tea is not sweet, at least a little, it is hot tea, or chinese tea.

And southerners rarely drink hot chinese tea.

It never really gets cold here, you see.  In the winter, 50 degrees is freezing cold.  Still no warrent… Read full post »

Hillary's Perfect Storm

We just watched a woman navigate a hurricane and arrive in port with her whole crew intact.  It was a perfect storm indeed.  More on that after some thoughts.

There is always some perfectly rational justification for not promoting women. Otherwise people that mind the bus… Read full post »

10 things ala Sally

1.  I can throw 30 pots in one hour and can easily throw one 50 lb pot in one hour.  I fire wood, electric, raku, and chimney kilns that I have designed, built, and repaired myself.

2.  I went to a special high school for science and math… Read full post »

The difference that makes no difference is no difference.

This longstanding sci-fi meme is coming to play for me more days than not.  Between the election,  other biological arguments, the idea of fatness as a stigma, and the cultural ramifications of widowhood, I am aghast at the sh… Read full post »

Caucus v Primary

One thing that I noted when the election had me interested, was that there is a distinction between a caucus and a primary.  It is a distinction that does not bode well to the angels of our better natures.

I brought it up at length with my husband in February… Read full post »

Men pee funny

http://www.ssc.wisc.edu/~mferree/images/pee-sitting.jpg

I am taken aback at the strange posit in a long thread about politics that women and men are identical.  Or that they should be treated as such in the world of politics.

I am accused of saying that a woman is not actualized except by giv… Read full post »

Real Change Isn't Funny

I was accused of not being funny and easy to talk to as I had indicated in my Bio.  I changed it to reflect that I am easy to talk to "in person" and that I am "frequently" funny, for the sake of truthiness.   But it got me to… Read full post »
