Requiem for the Jerry Springer Nation

Rate: 26 Flag

“It’s a show. It’s not the end of Western Civilization.  It’s chewing gum.”

                        Jerry Springer

Frieze of gladiator battling lion

My husband has the best turns of phrase, including “Jerry Springer Nation.”  That’s what he calls today’s society, and I concur.  We are the land of “I can do what I want,” where many have no regard as to how their attitudes and behavior may and does harm others.  Why are there so many reality TV shows where stupid, disgusting and unethical people are rewarded financially and otherwise (Jersey Shore, Keeping Up With the Kardashisans).  Hell, if someone named Snooki can pen A Shore Thing, have her own line  of clothing and perfume, and travel to Italy promoting her show, why can’t we all be famous?  Is this the End of an Empire?

I am not immune to the lure of reality TV.  I was perversely addicted to Hoarders and still catch a re-run from time to time.  I have also found myself immersed in Intervention, Confessions:  Animal Hoarding, and Bridezillas (a few months prior to my wedding).   So I have sunk into that abyss too.  Schadenfreude.  Shame on me.

An episode from Confessions:  Animal Hoarding

With the horrendous state of the economy and ever-increasing homelessness, joblessness and utter despair, with American citizens committing suicide and killing their children (Rachelle Grimmer in Laredo, Texas), something has got to give.  Perhaps revolution is the solution, or riots and pitchforks in the street.  For years I have wondered when the riots would begin.

Then came the Occupy movement, people from all walks of life banding together for a common cause, with good intentions, fighting for the least of their brothers and sisters, not the wealthiest and slimiest.  It filled me and many with hope, and others with disdain, but it was something.  A something that spread from Wall Street across the nation and into other parts of the world.  Something is better than nothing.

I suppose my hope for 2012, as outrageous and pipe dreamish as it may sound, is to bring an end to the Jerry Springer mentality.

2011 was a rotten year for me, personally, but my suffering pales in comparison to that of so many others.  To name a few:

·        Americans who have lost their homes and jobs

·        Those who have lost loved ones in Iraq and Afghanistan

·        Those whose family members have died timely or untimely deaths

·        Young girls who have been disfigured in Afghanistan on their way to school by acid-throwing men and boys who promulgate the belief that women are less than equal, less than human, in fact

·        Children forced into sexual slavery

·        Boys raped by a well-respected, trusted coach Jerry Sandusky.

I can go on and on.  The point is, misery is rampant, evil prevails.

My main hope for 2012 is that we not give up on ourselves or our nation, that we have compassion for those less fortunate, that we not fall into the trap of being so completely self-absorbed as to be blinded to the pain and suffering of others.  In so many reality shows, pain becomes fiction, people are characters, not flesh and blood, and a live audience mocks their misery.

The next step is live executions.   At the end of the Roman Empire, theatre degenerated into its own kind of reality TV with live torture, murder and sex acts.

I hope we haven’t sunk that low.  I hope we can recover before it’s too late.

A good and pointed commentary on something that may indeed be chewing gum but it's gum laced with poison that this already too poisoned society does not need.
Well said, Mary. Thank you, as always.
Just to remind you - the same networks that are extolling the OWS movement are the ones shoving shows like Jerry Springer, the Kardashians, Trumps Apprentice, and Jersey Shore down our throats.
said with force and conviction. Good for you.
Did you know that Jerry Springer was in trouble for political corruption at some point? These purveyors of sewage are not just innocent souls-- they are very cynical. The world is in a sorry state and the media is very guilty. Ratings and appealing to the lowest common demoninator is the national religion. It's some lousy superpower but the word "empire" doesn't seem to fit.

Nice hopeful rant there, Erika. From your blog to god's ears.
Baltimore, I'm sure you're right. the media industry sucks.

Sarah, thanks. I've had enough of the horror disguised as entertainment on TV.

fernsy, Yes, I heard about that. "Purveyors of sewage to innocent souls," well said.
Amen! This reality-based life people are living is crazy. Snooky, a millionaire superstar? Great Points and I wrote something similar on Viewshound that may interest you.

I have never really understood the reality TV thing, although I do admit watching snippets of the Kardashians from time to time out of sheer disbelief and horror. I hope we've hit our bottom, with reality tv, and the rest of it.
Scanner, thank you. I will read your piece.

Pauline, yes, the shows can really suck you in sometimes. I admit being a sucker for Hoarders and Animal Hoarders, I find it fascinating.
That this kind of thought exists gives me great and unexpected hope. The shows you mentioned are on the air because the people want them. The shows are not forced on the people. Unfortunately, there are two themes Americans love the most. The first is a low life (and I don't mean poor), ignorant and stupid person becoming famous. The second is watching cruelty and contempt. We eat this shit up. This is probably the only country in the world that people actually admit to being anti-intellectual. Other than having sex tapes on the internet, the only reason Kim or Paris are famous is because they are obviously stupid.

On the other hand, every now and then we get shows like "The Tudors" or "Deadwood" that help save face. This is a brilliant post, Erica, thank you. R
Thoth, you're right. We enjoy watching other people's misery. What does that say about us as a society?
Deadwood, ah yes, no better writing on TV, brilliant. Breaking Bad and Homeland are incredible too. Thanks for reading.
I couldn't agree more. Especially your point that we have become immune to the pain of others, perhaps in part because of the Jerry Springer mentality. The Sandusky atrocity became just more reality TV, instead of the serious tragedy that it is.
Exactly, Pam. As Pink Floyd said, we have become "comfortably numb." Thanks for stopping by.
Brilliant piece, Erica.

I stay away from reality shows, but I have my own theory for their wide appeal: They feed the masses' insatiable hunger for voyeurism or wishful thinking.

R♥
How right you are, Fusun. As Marx said about religion, they are the "opiate of the masses."
I struggle to keep my optimism, but too often my mind comes back to the very things you mention here. My instinct has been to restrict my consumption of mass media. I almost never watch television, I listen to public radio, and I read OS and a few news sites in addition to the newspaper. This way I stay informed, but the general media do not get too work on me more than they should.

Of course, not everyone is the relative hermit that I am, and when I have to interact with people, I am dealing with people who are in general highly influenced by the media. I'm not terribly old, but I am old enough to note a decline in civility and a rise in tendencies that indicate that people's attention has been fragmented into thousands of little pieces. Sidestepping the ignorance, thoughtlessness, and malice requires a great deal of thought and attention on my part, and in the days of texting and driving, our lives literally depend on being alert to others' inattention.

The end of your post is so appropriate, as we are a great empire whose material influences may have surpassed the critical mass beyond which we can sustain a society of reasonably balanced ethics and virtues. If historical patterns through the millennia hold, those public executions (or barbaric public spectacle yet to be imagined) may be on their way. With videos available online of beheadings and of the deaths of demonstrators, perhaps we are farther along in our decline than we can suspect.

A truly thoughtful post.
Great article...lots of excellent points here. I cannot believe that animal hoarders show... never heard of it- I especially couldn't believe that guy had a girlfriend!!! Excellent commentary!
Paul, we live in a very difficult, mass media hyped society. I commend you for limiting your consumption of TV, I wish I were as good as you. As I said in the post, my hope for 2012 may be a pipe dream, but we have to dream, don't we?

Thank you, Hayley. Merry Christmas!
You nailed this with the best of all possible things..Our Nation first..God bless and more.
Thank you, Algis. And good will to all men (and women). God bless us, everyone!
Brilliant commentary, Erica. As a society we seem to have devolved into a caricature of ourselves. I join with you in hoping that we've hit our bottom and can start the long, painful climb back up with the coming of the New Year.
~R~ and congrats on the well-deserved EP
I think we have sunk that low! I can't stand Jerry Springer. A fine post on a subject I worry about.
Unbreakable, thank you for reading. It is the decline of the Roman Empire, isn't it? Scary, but true.

Ralph, yes, we have sunk very low. Only way to travel now is up! Thanks for stopping by.
And....congratulations on your Editors Pick!!
History sure repeats itself.
No, 2012 is the end of the world.
The end of suffering.
Odd events of the weather in 2011 presage Something Coming.
It will be way cool.

"I can go on and on. The point is, misery is rampant, evil prevails."

I understand how you feel. I find myself slipping into that way of thinking at times and it's a difficult spiral to stop. But I don't think it's true that evil prevails. For every bad thing that you read about there are also good things happening, there are good people doing good work, and it goes unnoticed because it's not newsworthy. I've known this all along but it was really driven home to me during a course I recently took. I won't bore you with the details but it renewed my faith in the belief that good prevails. And you've got to admit, life in general is better for more people than at any other time in the history of mankind. One of the reasons for this is the explosion of the internet & social media. Never before has it been so easy to find out about the awful things that go on all around us, not just in our little corners of the world but all around the world. And that can result in positive change. It's always been "the best of times, the worst of times." I'm sorry you've had a bad year; I have too. But as the saying goes, it's always darkest before the dawn. Goodness always prevails. It may not be a law of physics but I believe it to be true as sure as I believe in gravity. Just had to weigh in on the flip side; great post Erica, and Merry Christmas. Congrats on the EP.
Let me know when this better day has come around in 2012, and I will consider returning. Not promising anything though, mind you.

This is written with the right kind of heart.
Great post. I always think it can't get any worse and then it does! Hard to imagine. But I think the good is getting better too. Life is about balance.
Good poem, James.

Thanks for stopping by, Jon.

Margaret, I hear where you are coming from. I try to always look on the bright side of life (quoting The Meaning of Life, Monty Python song), but sometimes the horrors seem to outweigh the good. Thank you for putting things in that perspective. It is the best of times and worst of times.

Brass, will do.

Zanelle, thank you. Balance, that's it! That's the key! xo
I couldn't agree more, Erica. I do think there's hope. I HOPE!
i hope with you the tide will turn but more often than not i start feeling like i am living in the last days of the Weimar Republic or the poem The Second Coming by Yeats. "Tunring and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity."
I'm with you here, Erica. I would add the video games, which are getting more and more realistic and less subtle about the subconscious drives they aim for: killing. Killing Nazis, aliens, vampires and zombies. Whatever the targets are supposed to be they all resemble human beings. The games desensitize and condition players to view whatever human lookalikes are being killed as subhuman. This is a step-off point for media manipulators to declare as subhuman whichever "enemy" is up next on their agenda: Communists, liberals, foreigners, Occupiers and any member of the Underclass, including biological imperfects. Call them zombies, vampires, insects, or whatever, but kill them. Press the button on your "joy" stick and kill them. Seig heil!
Ingrid, I believe there is hope too.

Paul, Thank you for the Yeats!

Matt, yes, I couldn't agree more. I heard about a game (not sure if it ever came out) where the JFK assassination can be re-enacted. As you said, it desensitizes us to the suffering of others, and turns murder into a game. Thanks for reading.
I share your sentiments Erica but will believe the improvement when I see it. The televised public executions has been covered in at least one sci-fi movie if memory serves.
Abra, that's right. There are a couple movies where they've done that.
I find "reality" TV so depressing. It is poisoning our young people into thinking that all we need to do is to become famous and all our troubles will go away. That is, famous or infamous, it doesn't seem to matter much.

And yes, we can't forget those less fortunate than ourselves, I couldn't agree more. Whenever I'm ready to have my own personal pity party, I reflect on my own list of those less fortunate than myself and remember how good I've got it.

Thanks for a very thoughtful post.
Amen, sister! There is a theory in the death penalty abolition movement that when Texas starts broadcasting live executions, it will mean the end of the death penalty in America. People don't actually want to see the reality, which is why "reality shows" are so popular. I keep thinking that this whole thing is going to slingshot back one day. The question is - when have we hit bottom. Thank you for writing!
narcissism runs rampant, but its not the same as brutality. of course they're interconnected though.
Ms. K, nice sentiment, but there's no hint that anything will stop Springer or the people like him, aside from death. And then, some other sumbitch will take his place.

Springer is a complete cynic. When he joined a Chicago station, briefly, as a commentator, the news anchors quit in disgust. Reportedly, he went around the newsroom and said, "Don't you know what TV news is? Weather, sports, and who got shot last night." And the awful part is, he's right, and no one wants anything different.

For that to change would require more than sunny liberal philosophy or a few protesters with signs, no matter how properly spelled they are as opposed to the Teabagger signs. It would require a paradigm shift in human nature. People would have to not want to watch freaks any more, and that ain't gonna happen in this universe.
Excellent post.

People living vicariously through those who are so self-absorbed and unaware of the world around them is the great allure of reality TV, which BTW, has no resemblance to an reality I'm aware of. Reality goes out the window when the red light on the camera goes on. Why we glorify ignorance and bad manners is beyond me. Honor and integrity seem to get you nowhere these days.

Springer is an ex high ranking politician. Is it any wonder he can promote and benefit from such poor behavior?
The "reality shows" are working class people at their worst. The Occupy Movement is working class people at their best. I know which side I'm on.
"The next step is live executions. At the end of the Roman Empire, theatre degenerated into its own kind of reality TV with live torture, murder and sex acts."

Interesting point to ponder in light of the fact that, "The Human Centipede 2", recently came out on video.
Witchywmn, you said it, it is "poisoning" to our young people. It does make them think that being famous or rich is all that matters in life.

Jennifer, yes, I've been wondering when they would start televising executions. Bottom ain't too far away. Thanks for reading!

vzn, you are right, I'm not saying all narcissists are violent, though.

Neutron, Yes, I know what TV is, unfortunately. I have an immediate family member in the biz and know all about ratings and so on. You may call me a dreamer, I'm only hoping for a brighter tomorrow.

Michael, So true. I forgot that Springer used to be a politician, no wonder he's so good at what he does. Thanks for reading and commenting!

Bob, Thank you, sir.

Anton, I have not heard of "The Human Centipede 2", will have to check it out.
Well said! I think that one important revolution that can and needs to take place is if the global community were to have a turn off your TV movement. Life is far more interesting and offers a better reality than Reality TV. Also, we are able to engage with new characters, learn something new while sharing at the same time.
---I find the news and the various "torture, murder and sex acts" depicted therein, to be far more distressing. Who's worse, Springer or the smiling jackals who sell death?----
Hey, I've been saying it for years, that guy is trouble! Let's focus on a real problem. Got to get some of those fatty fat-fat's up offa their sofas and start doing something other than watchin' unka Jerry pull some golden thread in the form of a "Final Thought" from that pile horse manure at the end of each show. OK? OK!

Huh...

But did you see the one with the midget who wrastled meat? Now THAT was funny.
I cannot thank you enough for voicing one of my ways of describing how I see our society and nation at large. It also validates why I should no longer slowly kill myself attempting to actually teach chemistry in either public or our local private schools. I even had a couple of students and parents who said about something once "But that is different than what someone said on Jerry Springer." When people think that he and his know more about select chemical concepts or issues than someone with analytical chemistry experience and research prior to teaching not to mention even more reliable sources of facts and information, we are surely doomed.
May we begin a process in 2012 to improve and learn. Thanks again.
Simba,
I agree. Turn off our TV sets. One of the best movies ever made that about the TV business and ratings is "Network" with William Holden, Faye Dunaway and Peter Finch. Finch becomes a TV "messiah" and tells people to turn off their televisions, go to their windows and shout, "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore."

Commentary #9, They're all evil bastards.

Dr. Piggly,
No, I didn't see the midget wrestling meat. One of my favorite gross outs, was the guy who had a sex/food fetish and ate giant hero sandwiches while having sex. Ugh!

SmartintheSouth, I hear you on that. I used to teach English, but it's been 20 years since. I have a close friend who is a part-time college professor and is quitting because her students don't care and don't read. I wish you the best in 2012.

Dr. Piggly,
Hear.Hear. JSNation is valid "pet name". For me disillusionment came the year I went to a bar and a TV was hanging in four corners. Then the invasion of people talking to someone all over the place on their cell phones. As a kiddo I loved to hear my folks talk. I'd sneak around to hear them- murmurs, but now I'm privy to strangers and it is creepy to me. Like I'm not walking beside you, or sitting nearby.

I don't think evil prevails. Gosh no. I think selfishness is the hallmark of our world. For me evil will always be some vamp Buffy onelined and took out with a stake. My 17 year old believes in evil. I used to, but now I just think i-generation just went spammy. I just think most people are trying their best to survive and that the political and economical hardships leave most winded.

I'm with you on recovering, but how and to what extent? Me. I want ALL kids to be in preschool. I want ALL people with disease to afford their healthcare and axillary costs. Those are my bottom lines and from there I can list more demands. But, how to ensure even those two basic rights?

I think. Honestly, I think in the next 20 years selfishness or evil will run riot. But, then I read posts like yours and I know the world is full of bright people who are living hard and fast and working to make "it" better.

Happy New Year! Congrats on the marriage. That sounds knew!
I so agree! I'm so often shocked by the general lack of civility out there. And yeah, I too have watched reality TV, sometimes with my mouth hanging open ("Bridezillas").

Let's fight the decline of our civilization by being kind, polite, humble, and well-behaved. Is it really that difficult?

Thanks for writing this post.

Bikerchick94
Mango, I hate to say "evil prevails," but sometimes it seems to. So many people being brutalized by those stronger than them, or those in power. I do hope that those who work for Good will prevail. Happy New Year to you and your family!

Biker Chick, Amen to fighting the decline of civilization! Thanks for stopping by.
I've been saying this for years: You can never underestimate the taste of the American public, but if you judge them too harshly it is immoderate, and after all there are alternatives. You just have to know who you're talking too, and not get overly moralistic. Read Montaigne in the tub.
the poet who best expresses your convictions is Robert Pinsky. He's rustled with your question for many years. His Selected Poems is now out, or read the review in this month's New York Review of Books. You are not alone and that may be our greatest refuge since I doubt it if will ever change.

hugs for 2012
Ben, I agree, not trying to be overly moralistic, just commenting on what I see. I will check out Robert Pinsky. Thanks for the recommendation. Hugs back to you.
Dear Erika, I just got to read this. It's the beginning of the year and I'm already behind! I agree and don't like much of reality TV. Instead of being reality, they're always showing contrived conflict and I think people who should be ashamed of themselves. I do confess to watching TruTVs World's Dumbest Criminals and Bio's I Survived - Beyond and Back. But I think those are instructive in showing lessons learned than anything.
CC, I agree with you. I was formerly obsessed with Hoarders and the Animal Hoarders show as I mentioned. They are also instructive, and can be cautionary tales. Thanks for reading!
