Bio
I am an artist, writer, and musician living in Brooklyn. I believe in the ukulele. I also believe in the serial comma. By night I create video game graphics and freelance articles for rent money. By morning I busk at the Boro Hall 2-3 stop for food money. I have quit three jobs during the height of this recession and believe each of those decisions was correct and necessary. Charmed yet? You will be :)

Song Written About You ($5): Pt 1

Rate: 1 Flag

During today's busking in the Boro Hall 2-3 corridor, I posted a sign above my ukulele case:

SONG ABOUT YOU!    $5

I practiced with Jason before leaving the house by asking him to feed me a few details about his old co-workers at the bank.  Here's a song I improvised on the spot about his former colleague Hai:

Song about You ($5)

[minor key]

"Ohhh, Hai, ohhhh!

You love your baby girl

More than any other in the world

Your heart won't harden

Ohhh, Hai, ohhhh!

You're not  from Ohio I suspect

If I'm wrong, I'll genuflect

and ask your pardon."

If freestyle rap were at the tempo of folk music, then you would know me as the Mistress of Ukulele Floetry. But as it stands, freestyle rhymes are just a few dozen beats per minute out of reach.

There were no takers today for Custom Improvised $5 Songs, but I did reach my highest busking take ever, at $12 in 45 minutes.

To celebrate, I bought a half pound of cherries and a ginger ale on the way home.

Highlights

A man with a long sleeved button down  shirt, around 50 years old, blew me a kiss. I winked back at him, and he ducked his head away with a super-shy grin.

An older gentleman with a cane stopped by and asked for my advice about what type of ukulele is best for beginners and whether I had any CDs he could buy. He gave me $5 and thanked me for my time, then told me he was legally blind. I wasn't sure if he had meant to give me $5 or just $1, and then wasn't sure if it was socially gracious to call that out or if it would just make him feel self-conscious about his vision and both of us feel awkward. I let it go, but gave him my contact info in case he'd like lessons.

A lady dropped a dollar in. "You're good," she reported to me with the same  matter of fact tone you would use to tell someone the name of the train station.

New Vocabulary Word: "Sequels"

Sometimes a person passes me by on the way to the platform and walks out of sight. Then a few moments later, that same person comes back over to drop a dollar in my case. That's the best.

We're going to call those folks sequels.

There were two sequels today! Double best!!
