Reporters: It Could Be Worse, But Not Much

Rate: 1 Flag

Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal listed the best and worst jobs of 2010 by occupation, based on environment, income, employment outlook, physical demands, and stress. For those in the media -- newspaper reporters, specifically -- there's good news and bad news. Those with weak stomachs may want to focus on the former. According to this list, newspaper reporters are number 189 out of 200. Almost the absolutely bottom. But take heart, because here are some of the things you could have been doing instead that would have landed you even farther down the list:

  • stevedore (I coulda been somebody.)
  • photojournalist (Say cheese.)
  • mail carrier (Saying "Nice doggie," no matter what the weather.)
  • taxi driver (You looking at me?)
  • roustabout (Pay no attention to the other end of the shovel.)
And now for the bad news. Here are some of the occupations that are considered having better and more secure prospects than yours:
  • actor
  • disk jockey
  • nuclear plant decontamination technician
  • waiter/waitress
  • security guard
  • fine artist
  • janitor
Even book authors and technical writers are better off than you. Who's at the top of the list? Actuaries. Yup, those people who do really intense statistics and figure out how likely you are to die and be miserable -- there might have been one involved in creating this list. Now don't you wish you had paid more attention in math class?
