The interests of this blog are multifold: an exploration of Islamic issues in the U.S., a discussion of political issues of the day, a little on literature and culture as it presents itself, and a general amplification of underrepresented ideas. As a former English teacher in Malaysia, I will often explore Malaysian and Islamic culture in the hopes of promoting a fuller understanding of the values that influence Islamic perspectives and politics today. Contact me if you want to read the full blog for that trip. This site will contain these and other blog posts on politics and current events. Interfaith collaboration: The panel to summarize all panels

Rate: 0 Flag

Issues of male-dominated interpretation, problematic scripture, women as recognized religious leaders, and stereotypes of religious women invade the majority of world religions.  This is the message of the "Change Through Collaboration" panel that will be the concluding panel discussion of the 2009 WISE Conference.  The questions being asked right now are lively, involved, adamantly open-minded: it is a refreshing experience to be sitting here now.  The panel features a Muslim moderator, a Jewish woman, a Christian reverend, and a Hindu academic discussing how different faiths can find common ground to be able to work together, as a more powerful force, on behalf of women everywhere.

"This conference is extremely unique in that I don't feel alone anymore," said the moderator, Mehnaz Mona-Afridi of the United States.  The panelists strongly asserted that women and minorities can work together for positive change, and for the equality and peaceful principles shared by all the religions represented here today.

Correction: This is actually the second-to-last panel discussion. The last is starting now, at 3:35 p.m., and its topic is "Change Through Action."
This workshop is led by presenter Nisreen Haj-Ahmed of the Columbia University Middle East Research Center. Participants are doing several activities where they talk about creating public narratives and how to set and achieve specific goals for your cause or organization.
(The last workshop I was referring to was "Change Through Action.")
