The interests of this blog are multifold: an exploration of Islamic issues in the U.S., a discussion of political issues of the day, a little on literature and culture as it presents itself, and a general amplification of underrepresented ideas. As a former English teacher in Malaysia, I will often explore Malaysian and Islamic culture in the hopes of promoting a fuller understanding of the values that influence Islamic perspectives and politics today. Contact me if you want to read the full blog for that trip. This site will contain these and other blog posts on politics and current events. Comfort is easy

Rate: 0 Flag

Even for the most well-meaning traveler, it's easy to fall into a group of people who speak your language or hail from your home country when you're abroad.   But if you're looking for a meaningful experience, it's important to get out of that comfort zone.  I've written an article for Expat Arrivals with tips on how to meet locals and immerse yourself in Southeast Asian cultures.   It'll also be appearing (hopefully with some of my photographs!) in the second issue of Overseas Registry magazine, probably in July.  I'll keep you updated.

For more of the Southeast Asian flavor, check out this gorgeous blog about the Baduy community of Indonesia.  "The Frame," hosted by the Sacramento Bee, is a photo blog with an international focus that at times rivals the Boston Globe's "Big Picture" in the realm of the lusciously visual.
