A man had a wife and two daughters. He was not a bad man. The man liked people. He liked to be liked by people.

The man was well liked. The man liked to make people laugh.  “Your daughters resemble you.”, people often said to the man. “Yes from the waist up.”, the man would reply. The adults would laugh at this joke.

What the joke meant was:

a)      That the reason his daughters did not resemble him below the waist was because they did not have a penis like he did, and

b)      That above the waist his daughters did resemble him because they had not yet grown breasts.

From this the daughters learned about the three basic groups of people: those who have  a penis, those who have breasts and those who have neither. The girls learned that they belonged to the lowest category of three: those who have nothing.  Belonging to either of the other categories was not desireable either: bodies were certainly a sordid business.

The daughters did not laugh at the joke because they did not want their father to joke about penises and breasts in their presence.
