Bio
"Often this poet, strolling through the noisy splintered glare of a Manhattan noon, has paused at a sample Olivetti to type up thirty or forty lines of ruminations, or pondering more deeply has withdrawn to a darkened ware- or fire-house to limn his computed misunderstandings of the eternal questions of life, co-existence and depth, while never forgetting to eat Lunch his favorite meal..." Frank O'Hara Lunch Poems, 1964. This site is dedicated to the spirit of the man who wrote "I am ashamed of my century for being so entertaining, but I have to smile." Different century than the one we are all now inhabiting of course, and he did have the ill-grace to check out early, before the 1960s ended and America's contribution to that century’s ill-conceived wars, brutal assassinations and betrayals had changed our graceful, fond and confident smiles to the currently fashionable smirks, sneers, snickers and grimaces seen nightly on the news and political talk shows. But still. I hope to "limn" my own "computed misunderstandings of the eternal questions of life, co-existence and depth" on these pages, while never forgetting to eat Lunch, and always, always searching for those rare moments of grace -- when whatever it is that this century is clicks more clearly into view.

A Modest Proposal

The President has proposed and the Republicans are applauding a pay freeze for federal employees.

But they really shouldn't stop there. I'd like to suggest another  even better economically pointless, but PR rich, gesture that is guaranteed to  elate ALL t… Read full post »

Dancing in the street

It strikes me that last night we celebrated as if it was the end of a war, rather than the end of an election. Which, in historic terms, it was. But the celebration also said a lot about how hard the last eight years have been.

I don't remember Americans dancing in the s… Read full post »

A little patience. A lot of courage.

"A little patience and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war andRead full post »

While obsessed blog and beltway denizens have been applying frenzied energy to solving the mystery of; “Sarah Palin: Who on Earth is this Person?” another mystery has gone unexamined and almost unnoticed in the nation’s capital.

Ann Coulter has disappeared.

Disappeared,… Read full post »

Studs Terkel dies

I loved Studs Terkel. I loved his books, his voice, his curiosity, his humor, his fascination with and love for his country and its people. I loved the stories he told, the incredible respect and humanity with which he listened, and, most important, the amazing breadth and variety of people… Read full post »

My Life as a Blond

I’m an urban, half Italian cynic with a life-long affinity for black clothes and ethnic jewelry. Blond hair and pink ribbons have never been my style.

That’s why the woman in my profile photo seems as much a stranger to me as she is to you.

For instance, those aren’t… Read full post »

It's the end of the world! I hope.

Or, more correctly, the end of the world as we've known it.

I may be the only American to be, despite the losses to my retirement account, the new caution of my customers, and the flat-lining of my home's value caused by our current financial crisis, inspired to feel hope andRead full post »

How else to explain the attention poured on "Joe the Plumber" after the last presidential debate? He didn't express one idea you wouldn't find in the most tendentious essays on the Wall Street Journal's editorial page, or spouted on air by faux populist like Limbaugh and O'Reilly. In otherRead full post »
