Would you hire me (on the basis of this blog)?

Rate: 8 Flag

Dear Loyal Readers,
most of you know I've been job-searching for over a year because, even though I love what I do at the Assisted Living Home, I can't get by on the pay (which is slightly above minimum wage). I never really thought about this blog, in relation to my job prospects, except for the necessity of keeping it anonymous, so that prospective employers (or current employers) wouldn't know too much about my personal life.

This evening, I was filling out an online application for a "progressive" company, which provided an "optional" space for giving links to one's blog, web site, or FaceBook page.

The reason they gave for the option was "so we can get to know you better." As far as I'm concerned, employers have no right (or need) to know anything about me, aside from my job skills and experience. I declined to give them any links except one for my Interfaith/Wedding Ministry web site. If that makes me a less desirable prospect, I guess it's not the job for me. We'll see...

Anyway, the experience made me wonder; would any of you Loyal Readers want to hire "Eva" (based on what you know about me from this blog) if you had jobs to offer? Do you think I sound like a desirable employee? Of course, if the answer is "yes" and you do have a job to offer, please send me a Private Message and we'll set up an interview! Not likely, I realize, given that most of you are in other states and some in other countries, but I figured it couldn't hurt. Mainly, though, I want to know what sort of picture you get, based on my writing in this space, and whether it makes me seem like someone you'd want working for or with you.

Thanks in advance for responses.

My Usual Blessings and well-wishes,

Eva T.

In general terms, I doubt if people ever hire anyone because of their blog but certainly pass them by because of something they see... i.e. they use your blog as a reason NOT to hire you. Unless you have a "safe" blog at blogspot or some place where you can put up ONLY what you want potential employers to see, I would say no.
EvaT.. I was shocked that they asked for.. a blog? Would it be used for future reference to you? Monitored??
I realize jobs are scarce but I could not work for that company on that request alone.
Would they be upset because of religion, your choice in mates? etc etc etc..
NOOOOOOOOOOO I could not.

I see you as a free spirit like myself. It is hard to put us into employment boxes.. VERY hard trust me. I worked for myself all these years because I did not want anyone to rob me of mine.
I would hire you because you are my kind of gal.
Sadly I have no jobs..
HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Jeff: Thanks for your input and wise advice.
Linda: I agree about "free spirit." Thanks for saying you'd hire me if you could!
Agreeing that I'd never give a perspective employer links to my blog or Facebook. I don't know what your work history/background is but based on this blog, of course I'd hire you because I've seen your loving heart and care for people.
I have never read anything on your blog that would be a reason not to hire you. Since you can control any comments, that should not be a problem either. I would hire both you and Linda if I had my own business. It is worrisome to think that

I am techno deficient today. Wanted to say it is worrisome that companies are asking for this kind of access to "get to know you better."
trilogy and Romantic Poetess: More thanks.

Technically I'll agree that employers really only need information on skills as related to the job.. however.. ;). When you think on it, employees spend four to eight hours (sometimes more, less) in the work place. It can be a good chunk of the day in generally close quarters. And there aren't that many people who manage to truly keep themselves aloof from c0-workers, most of us form circles of friends, often carry these friendships outside the work place.

So I can see in some respects how an employer might find such extra information useful - consider this : we put on our best face for both the application and the interview. Not always so much for personal blogs, FB or other social sites, some of us tend to 'let it all hang out' from behind this monitor screen ;).

Rated for always more than one way to get a cat skin coat.
I wouldn't want a potential employer to review my blog any more than I'd want him to install a video camera in my home for a day. Remember when inappropriate QUESTIONS that used to be the subject of controversy?
Seer: Different perspectives are part of what make this community interesting. I've only made a friend in the workplace once in my life; that was at one of my dumbass telemarketing survival jobs, while pursuing my acting career. She was an actress, too, and our chit-chat between phone calls helped keep us from being bored to death. Eventually, I asked her to read for the production I was directing, she did, we acted together for many years and are still friends today. But that's one workplace friendship in a working life of nearly 30 years. As a rule, I don't have much in common with co-workers and I also, these days, have jobs that invlove very little interaction with anyone except students/clients. The job I have now is, essentially, co-worker-less, 'though I say "good morning" to workers from other departments when we pass in the halls.
I've never skinned a cat!
benjamin: I'm with you. I consider personal prying, on the part of employers or prospective employers, to be rude and inappropriate. If the time ever comes when the only way to get a job is by answering such personal questions, I guess I'll do it, but I will lie through my teeth, on principal!
Impossible for a mother to answer something like this but in truth I doubt the need for such a personal look at you from an employer. I would stay away from that kind of intrusive request and question the validity of someone making it. Be careful out there. r
RosyMama: I'm glad to see you here and get your input. Don't worry. I am being careful.
I would hire you. Not sure for what job. Bellydancing would probably be involved. Based on my blog, I know that I would not hire myself.

littlewillie: Thanks for the bellydancing gig (if only virtual). Actually, I wouldn't hire myself (based on my blogs) to do anything except write blogs. Hmmm...maybe we could all hire each other to write blogs (with bellydance breaks) and none of us would need any other job...
