After a long day at the office yesterday, my brain was fried; the last thing I wanted to do was go home and write. I much preferred the idea of swimming in a bowl of garlic pasta while sipping pinot, listening to Sade as my boyfriend rubs my feet. Instead, I came home to my bulimic cat, an adoring boyfriend (sans foot rub) and my laptop, sheepishly mocking me from the couch; one out of three…not bad.

I was recently asked to write a guest column pertaining to a certain untapped genre (for this publication), and have been toying with ideas in my head for weeks.

Excited for the writing opportunity, my fingers have playfully teased the keys as my mind floated through ideas, never landing on a solid piece. After exchanging follow-up emails with the editor on Sunday, I knew teasing time was over and it was time to drop trou.

Kevin has been hearing me go on and on (I do that a lot) about this project. With unwavering patience and a little verbal push, he plays the supportive boyfriend role well. I don't know how he does it; even I get tired of my voice at times, and I am a classic narcissist.

Get out of your head. You are thinking too much. Kevin quietly leads a cheer. After thinking too much about not thinking too much, it finally clicked. My fingers found foucs.

Sitting next to each other on our writing chairs last night, as if working on his and hers lap tops, we shared creative silence. After five hours (and one glass of pinot) I finished. Well, I finished the beginning of something really great.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is get out of your own way. Having someone in my corner to assure there are no land minds on the road is just priceless.

I just sit down, write, spell check, and post. One day I will actually take some time... massage, and give my posts that tender, loving rub that makes everyone elses so great. Once I've written it I think I'm such a genius that I just HAVE to post it. Then I read it and I think "Ewww. Who wrote that crap?"

I like your way better. Try another coupla' glasses of pinot. Then I'd be completely sold.

Can't wait to read it.
Pinot is heaven, isn't it? I get -over-excited to post things also, before I have a change to edit.

This time, my writing was at someone's request and I had to follow through; as opposed to writing on my own time for me. It was a challenge. Editor has the draft. Now I sit and wait. ;)
The writing process is both a thing of beauty and a horrific nightmare. I spend more time dealing with the part about nightmares than about beauty, but I keep writing because I just can't stop myself.
you have the talent to keep a persons interest.
you've honed the ability to be fun to watch.
what more can a writer ask for except spellcheck.
@Ash - We write because we love it, no? :)

@wschanz - What an amzing comment. I am printing this and keeping it close by. Thank you!
Good for you! Can't wait to see...
too bad you're so mysterious about the outlet for your publication & the subject etcetera... geez isnt that kinda the most important thing out of the whole post? sigh, its a typical blog thing to make a sandwich and leave out the meat :p
Simple stories like these remind me that sometimes less is more.
Having only the words to tell the story encurages the mind to fill in the blanks and imagine the atmosphere.
@vzn - Not trying to be mysterious, but I can see how you read that. I am nervous about what the editor thinks, nothing more.

@cmulder002 - Very well said. I agree. Thanks for commenting.
It may sound trite, but as they say, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. So, you sitting down, with a shove from your boyfriend, and starting to type, was that single step.

And you completed your journey and delivered the goods. Now, all you can do is wait and see what they think.
nervous about the editor? here on OS, theres pretty much no editor. or, you're the editor. wink.
seriously though, the odds of not getting rejected are high in the publishing biz, unless you have a contact....
I said that wrong. the odds of rejection are high.
