What we witness with the growing unrest in America is a perfect example of the message of Christopher Hitchens in his marvelous 1998 essay "Goodbye to All That: Why Americans Are Not Taught History.”
To paraphrase Ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern in a different context, thanks to the pitiful pundits who to pretend to be a journalist as they live in constant fear of being one question or comment away from joining the jobless, and thanks also to the obscene transparency of the "mainstream" pundits' efforts to avoid at all cost offending the corporations that own and use them, the OWS movement has become a travesty as easy to dispense with as taking candy from a child with a hissy-fit. The powers that be simply direct the desperate homeless and capitalism’s more unsavory offal to the encampments and thereby create the "unsanitary conditions” necessary to justify a letter-of-the-law sweep. Aren’t they clever. And the response from the would-be Orwells and keyboard colonels who sanctimoniously opine from the safety of their comfortable sanctuaries? 'You Can Crush the Flowers, But You Can’t Stop the Spring' or “The Degree To Which You Resist Is The Degree To Which You Are Free.” Ah yes, leave no sugared platitude or vapid cliche unturned. Behold the dime store philosophy and sophomoric bumper-sticker slogans of those too uniformed of history to remember Thomas Jefferson’s charge that "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
It’s an American wisdom that the jobless youths fueling the Arab Spring know (and teach) far better than our fleeced Wellsian sheep who stand idly by as fascist goons pepper-spray peaceful, von-violent, demonstrators. Shame on who?!
And let’s not kid ourselves. The reason fleeced sheep remain so docile that their tents can be easily swept away in the night like garbage is because they know, gaseous hyperbole and empty rhetoric aside, the gun-toting, tear-gas, and pepper spray wielding ‘citizen’ goons in uniform will not hesitate to turn on their own fellow-Americans just as we see in the Middle East. With one or two exceptions in history power and privilege concede nothing to non-violence. Indeed provocation to violence has always been the tipping point. Even in case of Gandhi and the American Civil Rights Movement, provocation to violence has always been the tipping point. There are no journalists but only propagandists. “If it bleeds it leads.”And, of course, when the nothing-to-lose madding crowd is provoked the capitulating propagandist cry goes out, “Anarchy! Anarchy!” But ask: who are the real anarchists? The bankers and 1% who want no labor unions, the corporations that want no OSHA or environmental regulations, the financial barons who sweep away laws that protect the citizenry, the politicians who want no laws to interfere with their despicable scum-bag insider trading that is legal only because of the absence of law. “Whisk, whisk.” Those are the real anarchists who rule the America by trashing or evading the rule of law. It was deregulation and tax-dodging anarchy that got us exactly were we are.
When Nixon opened China for ‘free trade’ the investment bankers and corporations were foaming at the mouth.
‘Free at last! Free at last! Oh thank the god-bothering Republicans we are free at last! But just keep shoveling out the bigot-bait to keep the muttonhead WeDuhPeeeple busy with their Kulturkampf lest they figure out what’s the matter with Kansas before the wrecking crew gets done and there is nothing left to steal.”All that slave labor in a communist controlled economy, no labor laws, no labor unions!, no environmental laws, no minimum wage, no taxes!, no workers comp, no pesky journalists poking their noses into a fascist communist government that keeps peasant slaves crushed beneath the wheel in sweat-shop gulags. A robber baron capitalists’ wet-dream! How ironic is Lenin’s statement that “The Capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them.” Indeed, what bitter irony that rope will be stamped “Made in China.”
The next time the pathetic capitulating pundits and propagandists, who pretend to be a journalist as they live in constant fear of being one question or comment away from joining the jobless, call the Occupy protestors “anarchists” just remember the historical facts before Brother Ford goes whisk whisk. It is the anarchy of the 1% that got us exactly where we are in the first place. It is only thanks also to the obscene excuse for transparency of the gutless "mainstream" pundits', who avoid offending the corporations that own them, that financial and corporate anarchists can get away with calling their victims anarchists. It’s also ironic that Wall Street got its name from the wall erected to keep pigs out. Because free-roaming pigs were famous for rampaging through the valuable grain fields of colonial New York City farmers the Manhattan Island residents blocked the troublesome pigs with a long, permanent wall on the northern edge of what is now Lower Manhattan. How ironic that it now protects the devouring pigs rather than the real laboring producers of wealth whose jobs have been outsourced to slave labor in a Communist country where big government controls everything.
But lest I disparage pigs I close with a flip-side paraphrase of the worlds most revered contrarian Christopher Hitchens,
"The more one reflects on the nature of the national trough and its imagery, the more one wants to spring to the defense of the maligned pig ... Pigs have a fine ratio of brain-to-body weight, almost the equal of dolphins. They do, if left to themselves, know how to keep clean,. They possess many intelligent and humorous faculties. Can the same be a said of, say, the members of the Senate and House Appropriation Committees, [the Wall Street bankers or corporate robber barons]? I rest my case."François Arouet
