The Art of Recycling

sunflower tray

A few folks have asked to see some of my art….

I put this out there with trepidation…you know... the sensitive-artist-soul-crap….

I’m nowhere near as good an artist as so many here on OS. Nor do I claim to be. But I have been fortunate that I’ve done several public art pieces and do quite a bit of custom work.

So what the hell…. here goes…

I take what others might consider junk and create art. (At least that’s what I call it.)  I figure it’s keeping crap (I mean objects d’art) out of the landfills; my materials costs are low; people take my classes because they, too, want to learn the “Art of Recycling”; hell, folks even pay me to come show ‘em a PowerPoint presentation on how they, too, can make stuff with junk. (And I’m damn funny doin’ it.) But here’s the great part…I am inspired by this junk! I see an old table at a garage sale and immediately know what I want to glue on it! I "see" a rebirth.

I do mosaics with old dishes, broken glass, buttons, found objects, jewelry, and occasionally... real tile. I’m a garage sale / flea market junkie.

I also make garden art out of hypertufa (man-made fake rock).

I’ve been "creating" all my life, but my "real jobs" were in the corporate and/or non-profit worlds. I NEVER considered myself an artist. But I actually started teaching classes about 6 years ago and one thing led to the other. Now…no more consulting gigs, no more corporate BS, no more backstabbing, no more asshole bosses. And most importantly, less responsibility in my own home. My caretaker mode, of over 20 years, came to end with Momma’s passing and the grown kid and precious grandbaby finally moved out.

I became an “artist”. I declare it now. After reading “The Artists Way” and working through stupid childhood regressions from my parents’ lack of encouragement. After realizing folks were not too keen on hiring a woman of maturity, with way too much experience. After marrying another artist that has been a constant source of encouragement. After selling those first few pieces to happy customers.

I am an ARTIST!

Not a great one. But my stuff makes most folks smile. What more could I want? Well, that’s a stupid question. I want to be a rich and famous artist. Just as soon as Martha Stewart keels over, maybe there will be a vacancy for the new breed…a redneck-martha version. That’s me. I am so ready for my own show on HGTV.

I’ve learned that art is what an artist declares it to be. It is creation from one’s mind. Beware; my mind is just not quite right. I blame corporate America and George Bush. Perhaps the fact that my cornbread is a tad doughy in the middle has served to my advantage. I’d like to believe that. Hell, I DO believe that. Folks buy my stuff. They even commission me to make ‘em stuff. And the critics (thankfully, there has only been a few) just didn’t have a sense of humor.

So here’s a sampling of a crazy ole’ southern lady’s “art.” Please excuse the lack of quality in the pics. Lousy camera. Notice I blame the camera, not the one behind it. ;-D

The Clinton Library contacted several l0cal artists and asked for a few pieces that were presidential-pig-bbq-motorcycle -related, for display during a cookoff that was held on the library grounds. I kinda got in trouble for this one but I sold it before it went on "official" display.
It's called "High on the Hog"

This is another Presidential Pig... I used an old piggy bank and broken souveniers from the Clinton Museum Store.
It's called "Summertime"
(The Library staff bought this and it was President Clinton's Christmas present, last year.)

This one is for Monte...

This is made from metal admittance buttoms from a botanical garden.
Yep, I cut 'em up. This piece is 3' by 3'.

See Sheldon? I love me some horses. This is My grandson's old rocking horse with mom's old jewelry.  I finished it about 5 months before she passed away. When she saw it, she told me..."Now I will be in your garden forever." She was right.
"Treasure"

I like the premise and the art too. Well done! Rated
Thanks OE, man-0-man....you are quick!
That rocking horse is spectacular. I'm speechless with the immediate greedy desire to possess it. Love the Face, too. Thanks for sharing, you really should not be so bashful about it, you are quite talented.
Metal Flower likes a Van gogh creation. Impressive! --rated--
Sandra, I have done several horses like this one and they are always fun to do. Thanks for compiments. And I'm so NOT baseful....unitl it comes to my art....go figure!

Mean Mr., Van gogh? WOW. Thanks!
I love the jewelery bouquet.
I wouldn't have known that you had used "junk" to make your art. I love everything you make, especially the ones with lots of bold colors. And you are being paid to do something you love. You can't ask for more than that. Thanks so much for sharing your art with us. I know it feels risky.
Thanks for showing us your art! Cool!
Consider entering your pieces with a pig theme in the pigcasso art show at the World Pork Expo in June... check the website. They charge NO commission if you sell. I have sold several paintings/drawings there. Check it out... I'll be there!!!
Your 3-d pieces would add some real class.

Karin, no, no....THANK YOU!

Dorinda, proof that those old flower earrings are good for somethin"!

Mary, The more color the better! Thanks for easing the pain of risk! Much appreciated. Really! And you are right! This is much more fun than sitting in a gillion meetings!

Oh My, Brenda Gail. You are in OK. right? Where might this event be? My pig art is at the Clinton Store, but it's on commision so I could....maybe ...pull it ....and do this?
I love your art! Wishing I had a horse for my garden.
Karin, sugar, you can pop by any time. I'm flattered! The face piece walls (ice chest) are like 4 inches thick and folks think it is really heavy but even, I, weinie woman, can lift it! Hypertufa is really light weight. Cool stuff.

Voicegal, I've sold a couple of these to a botanical garden. Oh....I just happen to have a lonely little rocking horse here, now, just waiting for someone to want him.... just sayin'
The "Pork Chopper" is the best! The best!

Actually it is all very good. I like the premise of recycling to make art but I like even more what you do with it. If you had not told me how you got your media to work with I would have had no idea! Just Wonderful.

And thanks for thinking about my motorcycling passion.

Excellent!

And it gave me a smile.
Really creative! I like the face on styrofoam.
My daughter is with me - she's my enviro girl, and SO impressed. She loves Watchdog.

Do you have a website to show off your pieces? You really should. Your e-mail says "see what ya'll think..." I think you're fabulous.
Monte, there ya go again, all sweet talking me! I wasn't gonna put the "pork chopper" in but I thought it might just make ya smile. Glad it did!

reinvented -Thank you so much for stopping by. I appreciate you and your heartfelt posts so very much! You have been in my thoughts so much this week! I'll be praying for ya next week.

Annette, you bet your bippy, I have a website. I sent you a pm with my web address. I love me some "fabulous". Thanks!
Look it up on the web World Pork Expo 2009 and there's an entry form... three pieces for 20 dollars, only two in each category. You name a price and they will arrange for the sale... no commission. Plus there is 50 dollar first prize and 400 dollar best of show. Hint: 3-D usually gets best of show. It is in Des Moines the first week of June. Check out their website for an entry form.
Brenda, I checked the site and I couldn't find the entry info. Could you pm me a link to the entry form. Can you "send" your art or do you have to accompany? Then again, that info is probably on the site...DUH!
I'm sorry I missed this earlier! Your work is wonderful.
Thanks TD, perhaps I could use one of your awesome flower photos for a model to mosaic....could I please? Could I? They are incredible.
Let there be NO trepidtation on your part in posting this beautiful work! "I’m nowhere near as good an artist as so many here on OS."
There's NOTHING I like more than modesty, especially when it's sincere.

Thank you for finding me as a friend. I won't miss another post now, I assure you.
Rated and YES, you are indeed a very talented artist.
*jealous* of the ability, and time, to make such things. :-)

Rated, and glad to see others in 'the Rock' that aren't total nutcases (ok, well maybe just my kind of nutcases....)
Thanks Blue, I think all artists need a pat on the back every now and then.

C- Gotta love nutcases! Thanks for stopping by!
